Ricky Gervais is a legend, and you wouldn't even be having this discussion if it wasn't for him.
The American version is pathetic because they can't do fly-on-the-wall acting. It's all obviously scripted and it's lost all it's charm. I saw every episode of UK Office well before I ever saw NBC's Office... And yet I still like them both... People who say UK Office is better are just asses who are trying to make themselves feel superior by convincing themselves they've got some kind of higher sense of comedy. Pure BS.
