- wynja, on 05/08/2008, -8/+59Gotta love the Onion. Although, how far from the truth is this article really? How many people will be paying off heating cost bills that stacked up from this last winter? I'd say quite a few.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -19/+54The "stimulus program" is basically forcing you to take out a loan at the Bank of China. It runs up the deficit ( your DEBT ) while giving you the temporary illusion of having more money in your pocket.
- aussiejan, on 05/08/2008, -3/+33You lose all credibility when you use the term "retard".
- aguynamedjoe36, on 05/08/2008, -3/+29this whole stimulus thing is going to turn out even worse when some people decide they just want to save the money for when the economy tanks more. The government is giving out money in a recession in the hopes that people will spend it frivolously. the whole thing would work if everyone spent it, but that won't happen so everyone will just pocket it. everyone gains $600 which by the way is losing its value every day now, and the economy worsens so that it costs more to buy the same goods. great program, George.
- Tenlow, on 05/08/2008, -3/+24The incredibly sad thing is I did not realize it was a joke until I saw "the onion" headline. The blurb on digg makes it sound plausible, heating oil is damn expensive.
- rockstar1o9, on 05/08/2008, -4/+24if you don't want yours then give it to me. i'll gladly accept the temporary illusion of having YOUR money in MY pocket.
- PrismoFillusion, on 05/08/2008, -0/+17You can pay my taxes every year and I'll give you my $600 stimulus check.
- Tenlow, on 05/08/2008, -1/+18You must have skipped past the second sentence in my two sentence comment. The part where I said "heating oil is expensive". My false impression of the original title/description of said story was that people were spending the stimulus checks on heating costs, not actually burning the check itself. Also, go ***** yourself.
- cygnus2112, on 05/08/2008, -1/+17I don't hate China. I also don't hate anyone who is Chinese. I'm not anti-globalization either. But the American business model is flawed. We prop up mega-corporations that supply jobs and money overseas. Factories and small towns are shutting down and some are only supported now by the local Wal-Mart where the poor old ***** have to work now with little pay and few benefits.
While it's great to see China finally emerging from the dark ages and hopefully improve the lot for their working class, it's having the opposite effect on the common American worker. Sure, stuff is cheaper - but at what cost? We should be encouraging local businesses, local jobs, local productivity, local efficiency and local quality.
For our health. For our welfare. For our kid's future. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -4/+19I am still waiting for mine....
- LittleGerms, on 05/08/2008, -2/+16Happened in Germany
- FredRogers, on 05/08/2008, -3/+16I spent the entire $600 on bills. I didnt want to and I know that defeats the purpose of the stimulus plan, but i had no choice. I am a poor college student... : (
- Wyattx17, on 05/08/2008, -0/+12Same here. I have a credit card to pay off.
- aladrin, on 05/08/2008, -1/+13Does it really defeat the purpose? It pumped your $600 out into the economy instantly. Maybe you didn't buy anything new with that money, but now that you're freed up from the bills a bit, you can afford to go out to dinner or buy a new movie.
I, on the other hand, put it in the bank. I'm a bad, bad consumer. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -1/+13I understand this is fake, but for real situations like this, I propose this:
STOP SPENDING MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE.
I have a mortgage, but I can afford it. I have a car loan but I can afford it. People apparently don't understand that a mortage or a credit card is NOT free money!!! When someone makes 35k/yr and gets a $350k mortagage you deserve to lose it all. THIS is why homes are over valued and both parents are forced to work, resulting in kids getting into trouble with the law or drugs or god knows what else. People need to stop over borrowing.
Blaming lenders for the problem is like blaming drug dealers for drug abuse. Buy a little weed and you're OK. Borrow a little and you're OK. Buy 5 bags of crack and you're not OK. Borrow $500k and you are not OK. - declan69, on 05/08/2008, -2/+14Sorry but let me state the obvious again...Four kids is an option, its as if I were to buy a ferrari and then complain about my sad state of affairs and no money because of the payments. Having 4 kids you knowingly brought them into this worl d aware of the costs, so I have no pitty.
- xmodem2, on 05/08/2008, -1/+12you say it like we need permission :p
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/08/2008, -1/+11What the hell? Learn the difference between a country and a race! when people talk about china owning the majority of our debt, its not racism, it is a fact.
- tbstudee, on 05/08/2008, -1/+10The government can't give us anything it doesn't first take away from us.
- Arakcheev, on 05/08/2008, -1/+10The onion is a fake new site.
- crazyjake, on 05/08/2008, -4/+13yes, yes you are!
- aladrin, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9He doesn't have -any- stars in his post. That's Digg censoring you because you aren't smart enough to turn it off.
- Alreadyinuse99, on 05/08/2008, -1/+10So anybody that isn't completely debt free or have a good paying job is a POS that didn't pay attention in school, study, or work hard? Do you have a car payment? A mortgage? If so, then you aren't debt free and by your definition a POS. And I love the "people like you" comment. Did it occur to you that you are an elitist *****?
- beanfeast, on 05/08/2008, -4/+12Using mine to pay taxes.
- saigumi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8Hyperinflation, got to love it.
This is actually one of my favorite pictures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Inflation-1923. ...
A woman burning German Marks back in the 20's because it would heat the place more than wood that could be bought with them. - PhantomZmoove, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8That has to be one of my all time favorite come backs I hear from people when they complain about being broke. I chime in with "well, you make more than me and I'm not broke", and they respond with the kid thing. Everyone can reproduce. (minus a few with medical reasons) I think one of the main things to consider before having kids is....can you afford it? My answer to that is, well no, so my wife and I do not. She works, I work, we both afford what we can and I don't bitch to anyone about not having money because of "insert reason here".
- Konformitee, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8Where are people getting this misinformation? It is NOT coming out of your rebate next year, it is stimulus money created by a one-time tax cut. It doesn't affect whatever other money you're owed back from withholding too much from your paycheck. So, if you normally get $900 back every year, you're going to get $900 back next year and $600 in stimulus (or whatever you're getting).
- o0joshua0o, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8Everyone send your checks to me. I will make sure that all the money is pumped back into the economy.
- jmehl, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8I, for one, fully intend on fulfilling my civic duty. 32" Bravia, here I come! A nice dinner with the wife? Why not?? Maybe I'll put part of that money toward an iMac! Oh and... of course, I must get something small for my 10-month old son... He's the one who's going to be paying for this. I have to get him something for his (future) troubles!
- cygnus2112, on 05/08/2008, -1/+8They're going to go out and buy the cheapest crap made overseas, as quickly as possible! At a Wal-Mart/Dollar Store near you!
- Jenadae, on 05/08/2008, -2/+9def·i·cit

I learned meh some engrish - tbstudee, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7They do. It's in gray text right under the main title, says "theonion.com"
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -1/+8No, there is this gruff hill-dwelling guy in alaska who also thinks the onion sucks.
- tekkitan, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7apparently sarcasm isn't your forte
- govsucks, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7HAH, screw the onion, how about something real. I will be taking 100% of my money sent BACK to me by government and writing a check to government for a small portion of the 2007 taxes I owe. So government took money from me to give it back to me so I could give it back to them. Proving once again that there is NOTHING more efficient than government.
- PATSCRU, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6somebody pooped in xylix's cheerios
- itsthemechanic, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6You traitor. Living within your means is Unamerican.
- gnimsh, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6Boy those Europeans sure know just what to say to insult a guy
- freezeout, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7Bernanke said he would drop money from helicopters if it was the only way to save the economy and now Bush is doing exactly that, just without the helicopters.
of course all Bush is doing is delaying the inevitable so that the real economic pain will only hit us after he's out of office
a problem caused by printing too much money cannot be solved by printing more money - pegisys, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7if the bill is lingering from the winter something tells me that they wouldn't have extra money
- EasyE888, on 05/08/2008, -6/+12Its depressing how true this article is.

You want news go to CNN/MSNBC/Yahoo/Fox News (Delete to agree with political leaning) - IslandDog, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5That you have no idea what you are talking about?
- saigumi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5So, your parent's trust fund is working out for you, eh?
- saigumi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5I spent mine already on a bag of pre-63 dimes. Take that economy! Do your worst, the dollar goes poof and I still have money that is worth something.
- tekkitan, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6do you pay taxes? :-)
- elfprince13, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5unfortunately this is pretty much the state of things with low income VTers. people will turn on their boilers for 2 hours a day, and then sit around them and enjoy the warmth put off as the water cools. Our Vermont Sustainable Heating Initiative is trying to get pellet stoves into low income houses for the upcoming heating season, and to get pellet production in state
- fokov, on 05/08/2008, -6/+11"Must be nice" god there are few phrases that piss me off. Sorry that you are a POS that didn't pay attention in school, study, or work hard. Obviously Shawn did and is reaping the benefits of his or her labor. Luck is an excuse for the uneducated and unprepared. Try to make yourself better, not blaming others for actually working smarter than you.
But then again, you will ignore advice like this, even though it is exactly what people like you need to hear. - ErikHarrison, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Personally, I think fatrandy is an idiot. Obviously either has no bills, or does not live in this country.
- Wolfspirittt, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Just take a deep breath.. it will be alright. This guy needs a hard drink or to get laid.
