- weirdralph, on 06/29/2009, -12/+902Yep, pretty much sums it up. Pixar FTW!
- EggAndMuffin, on 06/29/2009, -75/+653found this:
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/1973/pixar.jpg - larryjr88, on 06/29/2009, -5/+545LOL THESE ANIMALS ARE SOOOO SILLY!
LIONS DON'T USUALLY DANCE SO ITS FUNNY YOU GET IT? - RoroCo, on 06/29/2009, -0/+480Pixar puts more thought into the story line of the shorts than Dreamworks puts into their feature length films.
- DarkKnight5590, on 06/29/2009, -8/+399They forgot about Nemo.
Pixar has always just been made of pure win. Ever since I first watched Toy Story. Damn that brings back some memories. - DiggasWAttitude, on 06/29/2009, -2/+382Its like stories at Pixar don't go through 70 exectutives who feel the need to add their own 'creativity'. Also, I would be surprised if a focus group got anywhere near a Pixar movie. 'The robots should be dancing to Kanye West!'
- Zomgondo, on 06/29/2009, -22/+388Short Circuit != Wall-E. Fail.
- malex, on 06/29/2009, -2/+277Celebrity voices! How could they forget about the celebrity voices!?
- DanteDefiance, on 06/29/2009, -13/+278OK I totally agree with the comic, but Dreamworks came kinda close to grasping Pixar's magic with Kung Fu Panda.
Shame they know that and will milk it for all it's worth. - GregLoire, on 06/29/2009, -0/+242Roger Ebert once said that it's not important what a movie is about; what's important is HOW the movie is about it (the movie "Election" comes to mind -- you could not have convinced me before seeing that movie how much I would've thoroughly enjoyed a film about a high school election).
None of the Pixar movies sound particularly great when you briefly summarize their main plots. It's the actual storytelling that makes those movies great. You could summarize the plot of Shrek in such a way that would make it sound like a more interesting movie than the summary of Toy Story in this comic, but Toy Story simply has better storytelling scene-to-scene.
So in that sense, this comic kind of misses the point about what truly separates them. You could write real summaries for Dreamworks films and find some silly theme throughout Pixar's, then just flip this whole comic around without really making a point. - megaton, on 06/29/2009, -13/+254Misses the point.
Nothing wrong with a snarky grin. It's just that's the only thing the Dreamworks flicks have. - feezus, on 06/29/2009, -0/+218"Each year I do one DreamWorks project, then I take all the money to the Oscars and bet it on Pixar."
-Jack Black - RobotKeaton, on 06/29/2009, -2/+141To be fair, Antz/A Bug's Life was a big coincidence. And Antz came out first.
- daysleeperchuk, on 06/29/2009, -1/+106For Dreamworks you forgot to add,,"Include in or finish movie with,, a fun 60's/ 70's/80's era dancable hit song type animation montage or singalong --think; "Car wash"----"Kung-fu Fighting"----"Sugar,Ahh.. Honey Honey"-----"I'm A Believer"--You know something nostalgic the adults will appreciate for It's seemingly random throwback appeal.... and yet kids can still have fun listening and dancing to, because,, You know,, every couple years people... there's another generation where in It's possible there are still some toddlers who've never heard, "Baby Got Back"!!!! -but boy wait til they do!!!! ---Kids love songs about Butts!
- ManUnitdFan, on 06/29/2009, -0/+99I'm eagerly awaiting Kung Fu Panda 2-6.
- Johnsillyhead, on 06/29/2009, -1/+98"Up" was absolutely fantastic. I was crying in the first ten minutes of the movie and I don't cry at movies.
- iDoraemon, on 06/29/2009, -29/+125I loved Up because it was great.
I loved Kung Fu Panda because it was great.
Huh? Pixar made Up and DreamWorks made Kung Fu Panda? *gasp* This is me not caring. - inigomntoya, on 06/29/2009, -7/+102One of the things that Pixar does is they come up with completly original ideas on their own.
Where Dreamworks sees something else and says, "Hey, lets make a cartoon based on THAT!"
Ants - "Let's make an adult version of Bug's Life!"
Over the Hedge - a somewhat popular cartoon that was probably cheap to buy the rights for
Shark Tale - "Finding Nemo seemed popular. People must like fish. And HEY! Everyone LOVES Will Smith! Let's make a cartoon for him!"
Bee Movie - "So Jerry Seinfeld said he would never work in Hollywood again unless we make a cartoon for he and all of his Jewish buddies..." - papashawn, on 06/29/2009, -9/+101I miss hand-drawn animations.
- jc7012, on 06/29/2009, -2/+91HI BILLY MAYS HERE FOR DANCING LIONS!
- SkippyBiffles, on 06/29/2009, -2/+81I mean, just how many facial expressions can you animate on a character to convey an exciting feeling? It shouldn't come as a surprise for there to be dozens of similar looks.
- DelSolMan, on 06/29/2009, -6/+82Jack Black at Oscars: To do one Dreamworks animated film, then take all the money he made to the Oscars to bet on whatever Pixar has in the running.
- clouds31, on 06/29/2009, -9/+81Exactly.
- EggAndMuffin, on 06/29/2009, -1/+66Here's why Pixar "FTW":
Pixar makes the movies that they would personally enjoy,
and assumes other people will enjoy them as well.
Dreamworks seems to spend their time figuring out
how to appeal to a single audience (i.e. everyone) and make the most money.
One method is truly artistic, the other is a soulless popularity contest.
(quoted from ZombieBite) - Qumahlin, on 06/29/2009, -7/+70I was high as ***** and actually started clapping with joy when Wall-E finally got to hold EVE's hand...yup, they make some great films.
- Atario, on 06/29/2009, -1/+61At least it'll mean they stop milking Shrek. Probably.
- mlrigsby, on 06/29/2009, -0/+60Dreamworks: And they have celebrity voices, no matter how bad or distracting, for no apparent reason.
- poxonyou, on 06/29/2009, -0/+56Dreamworks movies just seem like they're made to reflect the pop culture at the moment, probably expecting better sales, but as a result, they have poor lasting appeal. They feel dated just 1 year later, and more so as time passes. They fill the movies with top 40 radio hits, hire the popular TV actors of the moment for the voices, rely more on the newest catch phrases/slang, and make various pop culture references outside the movie.
- fungusmonkey, on 06/29/2009, -2/+52They forgot to add "repeat the exact same stupid 'fish out of water' storyline". For as much fun as the first Shrek poked at Disney, they are the exact same kind of plot-recycling, no-talent, generic filmmakers.
- EddiePotato, on 06/29/2009, -1/+50People love to get all nationalist about stuff -- it's a tribal instinct. It's why people are all gaga about their sports teams, even though the players are always changing and have no real allegiance to any one team. Or why people scream at each other about Macs and Windows boxes even though they're practically the same thing. Ford Vs. Chevy, East Vs. West, blah blah blah. Just a little taste of an Idiocracy in the making.
- avalanche123, on 06/29/2009, -5/+53Pixar rules!
- nofrill, on 06/29/2009, -0/+48No dissassemble number 5!
- Hallucinogenic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+47I wasn't aware that Sega made films.
- e3revolution, on 06/29/2009, -3/+49Does nobody like Shrek? I mean only the first one.
- Tyrghast, on 06/29/2009, -19/+64***** Rich Productions, because Dreamworks was taken and it sounds like a gay bar anyway.
- Rikushix, on 06/29/2009, -4/+48I think it can be pretty universally agreed upon that Pixar's films, overall, are of higher quality - or that is, Pixar has less, uh, duds, than dreamworks does - but there is one film I have to contend with: Antz was a FANTASTIC movie when it came out. Did you ever watch A Bug's Life as a kid? I couldn't stand that movie at ten years old. As I recall Antz was fantastic.
- cosinezero, on 06/29/2009, -0/+44The short in Up is even better.
- inigomntoya, on 06/29/2009, -1/+44I agree - did you see Pixar's Presto short?
Abso-*****-lutely amazing! THE most creative use of animation ever. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -3/+44Dugg for truth.
- Qumahlin, on 06/29/2009, -6/+46Yeah...but in a dreamworks film thats all they do....
- LawScholar, on 06/29/2009, -1/+40Hmm...sadness comparison...
Liking Pixar movies more than Dreamworks movies.
Vs.
Posting an paragraph-long emo rant about people liking Pixar movies more than Dreamworks movies.
Hmm... - landosystem, on 06/29/2009, -0/+35They forgot the joke writing in Dreamworks, main character steps in poo, someone farts, rinse, repeat.
- firebhaal, on 06/29/2009, -2/+37this just in
people make faces - PsychoBrat, on 06/30/2009, -0/+34Dreamworks feeds off pop culture.
Pixar *defines* pop culture. - serif69, on 06/29/2009, -0/+34Then you'll be happy to know that John Lasseter, head of Pixar and now head of Disney Animation, basically said he would refuse to head up Disney Animation if they didn't do more hand-drawn animation. The guy loves traditional animation. They did that Goofy short "How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" as a combination of ink-on-paper and Wacom tablets, so that's all hand-drawn, if not completely traditional. The first hand-drawn feature under Lassater is going to be The Princess and the Frog. If you have a free moment, check out http://www.disneyanimation.com/projects/princessfr ... There isn't much info there, but at least you can see the visuals that they're creating.
- Akairenn, on 06/29/2009, -1/+35THESE ANIMALS ARE SO F-ING FUNNY!
IT MAKES ME WANT TO MERGE WITHOUT LOOKING!
YEAH RUMSFELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111111 - vaylor, on 06/29/2009, -2/+36And "A Bug's Life" was derived from "The Magnificent 7" which in turn was derived from Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and so it goes...
All the same, yes, I do love Pixar films. - jc7012, on 06/29/2009, -0/+34I'm sorry...I'm having a hard time letting him go.
- EddiePotato, on 06/29/2009, -0/+32Not just true for animations. Look at the promo shot for every movie Harrison Ford has ever done. Or Robin Williams. Or a dozen other big name live-person actors!
