    Stop = Stop, then go when it's clear (or otherwise follow stop procedure when multiple vehicles are present).

    No Stopping = No stopping on the road (or the side of the road) for an extended period of time, i.e. waiting for somebody or dropping somebody off. It's akin to "no parking" but covers short stops. Stopping at the stop sign is obviously permitted.

But you see, if you look at it without taking into account that the same word can mean two things, than it doesn't make any sense. It says both "stop" and "no stopping". This is where the funny in the picture is hiding.

    I'm surprised there is not a image result for that on Google image search. New photography task I suppose...

  • slezzzter, on 12/28/2008, -2/+9I find that these generally exist at "T" intersections where the main route continues to the right and a secondary road is entering from the left. Those entering from the secondary route must always stop and those entering from the right do not need to stop at all. When approaching from the bottom of the "T" the "Stop except right turn" sign is just a reminder that you must yield the left turn to any car already waiting. It shouldn't be confusing in any way, but you called them "interesting," so I suppose you understand the reasoning.

    You might also consider a 4-way stop where all cars intend to make right turns, there is no reason for any of them to stop since they will not interfere with one another. It's good for the environment to minimize stopping.
