He is kind of an icon in America because I have yet to find one American who has not watched The price is right. (when you stay home sick turn on the tv it is the only thing on) He is not really idolized like a lot of celebrities but every one remembers him with a fond memory because we all watched it when we were young (kind of like Mr. Rogers)
He is also disliked by the vast majority of pets. Since he ended every show he ever hosted by saying "Help control the pet population; have your pet spayed or neutered"
