- blackturtleus, on 03/20/2008, -0/+1There is a species of cholla that is often referred to as jumping cholla because cactus segments will break off when the plant is merely brushed up against. Sometimes it almost seems as if the cactus actually jumped at you. The spines have very small barbs that cause them to tend to dig deeper into the skin. That is, in an attempt to work themselves free of the spines, victims almost always wind up causing the spines to go deeper into the skin... at least until they figure out what's going on.
