- satanswetnipple, on 03/10/2008, -0/+17The US dollar is unlikely to remain in the position it has been for the best part of a century. Many oil producing nations have been angered by US foreign policy for decades, and now they see the soft underbelly of a superpower that has stretched it's debt and military too far. The fewer commodities that are traded in US$, the less it will be worth.
This can be seen as a bonus for US based farmers and manufacturers, as imports will rise in price, and make US produced products more competitive. A few countries though have planned for this though, and have tied their currencies to the US$... looks at China.- philipl411, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6One of the few times I have seen a posting that looks at the issue correctly.

- ladbroke, on 03/10/2008, -1/+3You think the 3 trillion Iraq War, coming Social Security time bomb, and mountain of foreign debt don't have something to do other nations' valuation of the American dollar and our ability to pay off our debt, hence creating the fall of of the dollar? If you took some kind of macroeconomics course in college, you'd see there are these things called foreign exchange markets...
- PoonGnarfler, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1When did Bush have anything to do with the "coming Social Security time bomb"? Unless you count the fact that he is one of the 50 million baby boomers that are the real reason.
- ladbroke, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Okay. He's an elected leader. Our prior elected leaders did nothing about it, instead leaving it to the next president. Dubya is leaving it to the next president. How does that make him any less culpable? Don't elected leaders have to make tough decisions anymore, even at the sake of their own electability?
- zmigliozzi, on 03/10/2008, -3/+6Bush controls the value of the dollar? He really is getting more and more powerful everyday. /sarcasm
- thugok, on 03/10/2008, -1/+3I'm not the best economist on digg but I think blowing trillions of dollars in another country with nothing to show for it tends to take a toll on your economy, which is where your currency gets it's value. - sexybobo, on 03/10/2008, -8/+9you realize it is not free right. It has a little to do with the 17% vat you pay for every thing you buy and all the other taxes you pay. I personally think i can do a better job paying for my own insurance and my own health bills and my own college then the government can.
- ja9ae, on 03/10/2008, -4/+11Yes I realise I am paying for it right now with my taxes, but at the time neither I nor my family had the money for that education and so the government picked up the tab. I'm now an active member of the economy generating plenty of tax revenue, so I guess their investment was worth it for them, as it was for me.
- DannoSpeaks, on 03/10/2008, -2/+12Free?? I'm not even from England and I know it isn't free. You pay the entire amount in taxes. Also, many people who can afford it elect to get better coverage through insurance in England. Just because you don't pay out of pocket doesn't mean it is free. "Foolishly, you might think you're getting a bargain as you slosh American Regular into your car's 14 gallon tank - but you'd be wrong. Because American gasoline is of inherently inferior quality to the stuff we sell in Europe - even the 'Super' grade."
"You might be surprised to hear that. After all, in America gasoline is about one third of the price of the UK (it's roughly $2.50 a gallon here at the moment.) But what very few people realise is that it's not the same stuff at all!"
US petrol seems to be like US beer; watered down slop.- slashbot, on 03/10/2008, -7/+8And yet we are still driving. You sir can take your pricey gas and shove it.
- ja9ae, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6I filled up at my local, slightly overpriced station at the weekend and a US gallon of petrol was £4.22 ($8.51/XE.com)! Most of that goes on tax.
- drakenlot, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6sucks for you.
- ja9ae, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2It certainly does. Unfortunetely all us Brits are all just a bit too British about it and are just putting up with it in the hope it will all sort its self out. We tried some protests a few years ago but when it took hold and pumps started to run dry we all realised how crappy our public transport is gave up. Although it is always comforting to see that where minor chaos threatened to break out over such things, we still managed to form orderly queues.

- headband, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5wrong.
the octane ratings use a different system than we do in the US, from what I have read basic over there is about the same as mid range over here.
not to mention most of our vehicles are designed to run on our fuel and we see little to no improvement going from regular to premium - tugger, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2The beer has to be watered down in the US.. Most yanks fall over after a couple of pints of British beer. Most likely because they are brought up on buuuud, which was originally brewed to appeal to women.
My 'new' florida rental car was a 3.4 litre V6, with 120 horsepower, and about 15 mpg. Jesus, 4/5ths of the fuel gets wasted generating noise and engine heat, and the damn thing had a heavy cast iron engine, floppy chassis, and cart/leaf springs at the rear.
So someone please calculate whether european engine efficiency, vehicle weight, body weight (US fat bastard white trash), endless stopping at traffic lights (because roundabouts are sooo complex), crap US fuel means that europeans are getting more miles per euro than the yanks.
It has to be true.
- smek2, on 03/10/2008, -13/+4Wow, you're retarded

- sodoh, on 03/10/2008, -4/+18To fill my tank costs about 35 euros. That will last me for 2 weeks at about 40-45MPG. So one litre will get my about 10 miles.
Average MPG for Americans is 23 miles. Which means you can get about 6 miles on 1 litre of gas.
So while your paying less (which isn't really true since recent currency changes) your having to waste more. The sad thing is when you do start bringing in cars that save gas your government is thinking of ways to tax the car owners to make up for the lost revenue in taxes.- cvindustries, on 03/10/2008, -2/+10Ha! Get a bike and drive it around your big city - that way you get where you need to go and lose some weight at the same time.- cvindustries, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3Ha! I use the bike. That's why the tank of gas lasts 4-5 months! Living in a big city doesn't make the tank of gas last longer, it's driving less that makes the tank of gas last longer. Retard.

Uninformed European -1 - Stanly22, on 03/10/2008, -6/+7Wow, another misinformed European that stereotypes Americans. Too bad cars in Europe don't run on rotting teeth. They could all drive for free! Smell my sarcasm?
- diggdiggerid, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2your argument makes no sense
you are comparing the average American MPG with the specific MPG of your vehicle--one which you probably chose because of its high MPG. to make sense you would either have to compare the average European MPG with the average American MPG or choose the highest of each. I can find you an American vehicle with an MPG higher than 45, what would that prove? nothing.

- slashbot, on 03/10/2008, -5/+2No it isn't. The price difference is from TAX
- hajamieli, on 03/10/2008, -4/+2Yes it is. The quality difference shows in octane rating and high overall purity grades.. 95 and 98 are the standard octane ratings. The leaded stuff used to be 97 and 99 back in the 80's. Yes, the price still consists of mostly tax (75% or so).
- hurt911gen, on 03/10/2008, -2/+5There are no cars sold in North America that require above 91 octane gas.
- hajamieli, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1I guess that's primarily a consequence of the gas quality.

High school education should be a necessary right to every citizen, just like municipal services, state police and courts. It should be a right to every citizen. College, health care, welfare, however, among many other things, should NOT be because you can't force me to pay MY tax dollars for your well-being only. I don't care if your ass got too fat or you chose to smoke and now you need a $10,000 surgery, I don't care if you let yourself have 10 kids and you don't have enough money now to support them, and I could care less if you want to go to college and party for four years. Pay it out of your own pocket, but not my tax dollars.

- ggfobster, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3It's very simple. The more dollars that flood into the market, the more inflation drives up the cost of goods. Then, when the dollar sinks in value, not because of the printing but rather because of a weak economy due to many factors, goods are too expensive to buy. Then we get stagflation and if it runs away unchecked at best we get a recession, at worst we get a depression. Any questions?
- HeyaBILL, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1He is referring to the real money supply which is the nominal money supply divided by the price level. In the long run after the price level has adjusted, the real money supply will stay constant but I will quote Keynes and say that "in the long run, we are all dead." In the short run, it leads to a smaller real money supply which is bad news and immediately relevant.

Summary : We could abstract it by this simple rule : If everybody has more money, than everybody should be able to pay for bread at a higher price. If everybody pays more, than money is less valuable.
Think about how some of you older people were able to pay 5cents for a bottle of Coke. Everyone had less money, then it made sense to pay less for something.

- mciampa1214, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5You brew your own gasoline too?
- rdoger6424, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2As long as the township doesn't know about the Derrick in the back, I'm good.
- gak001, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4Hurray for Gevalia!
- JackHererUK, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5Not in europe it wouldn't. 1 litre of "gas" costs about £1.05 in the UK, that is about £4 a gallon or about $8.
- wssharp, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3man that's cheap gas, driving through california yesterday i saw 91 octane for $4.05.. i ended up paying $3.76 =(
- DannoSpeaks, on 03/10/2008, -1/+1Cheap? Just because you are paying more, doesn't mean the other option is cheap.
- MyDiggIsBig, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1hahahah... gas here in Santa Barbara is at $4.19... ahahaaha. im going insane and delusional. ahhaaha
- trisweb, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah but it was 3.08 and 9/10... aww... and yes, that's insanely cheap gas (and that is SO SAD). Lucky bastard!
- timmay, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1We get free coffee here(san antonio) when the spurs wins
- Scorps111, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1For a gallon in England its 9.86566 U.S. dollars
- ExiL3, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4can americans please stop whining about gas prices?!
- rdoger6424, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2gimme $20 a week and I'll shut up
- WeThePeople2012, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1I'm an American and I'm not complaining about the price of gas going up. I want the price of gas to go up even more. This countries transit system needs to be rethought. We're destroying the environment. If you live in a major city in the US why do you own a car. Americans need to stop being so selfish a greedy, we still have the cheapest gas prices in the world. Why should most families be able to afford more than one car? Why should we have the cheapest gas prices in the world? Why don't our cars have the best mileage in the world instead? Why our we obsessed with speed, power, SUVs, and trucks? Why our more of us driving scooters or motorcycles, or riding trains and buses?
However as I'm sure most diggers know, the price of oil is not changing at all. The dollar is declining and that is creating the illusion of rising gas prices. That i am very concerned and angry about... Ron Paul would fix this.- gak001, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Actually it's an oil bubble. Gas still only costs about 60USD per barrel to extract, transport, and refine... the rest is all the result of speculators. Thank Wall Street for the prices.
- cornelje, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1If you go to speedway every 5th coffee is free with the rewards card.
- thelastknowngod, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1gas in NJ is $2.91/gal today. and in nj i dont have to pump it myself. its actually a law in jersey... im not allowed to pump my own gas.
if i go over the bridge into philadelphia i have to pay about $3.10 and i have to pump it myself.
people in jersey still complain about it.
- slashbot, on 03/10/2008, -1/+4Unless you prefer to brew your own and not pay the outrageous markup
- eclectro, on 03/10/2008, -1/+4You know, this is more about incompetence than doom. I really believe that.
- bhaity, on 03/10/2008, -2/+0or impotence
- WeThePeople2012, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0it's not incompetence, it's corruption. power is easier to consolidate during economic depressions and recessions. wealthy bankers were purchasing corporations for pennies on the dollar during the great depression.
- bhaity, on 03/10/2008, -2/+0or impotence
- allemande, on 03/10/2008, -25/+3WHAT!!?!?!? WTF!!?!?!?!?!?! HUH?!?!?!?!?!? OMG!!! OMFG!!!! ROFLOMFG!!!! LOL??!?!
...i saw it coming- Tag89, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1That would be because there's a thumbnail right there?
- screensnot, on 03/10/2008, -12/+2So, now I have to stop using the phrase, 'queer as a three dollar bill'?
- Xplorer, on 03/10/2008, -3/+4Please, if being retarded didn't stop it, then why should a digg submission...
- screensnot, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1It's alright. I'm taking the word back.
- Xplorer, on 03/10/2008, -3/+4Please, if being retarded didn't stop it, then why should a digg submission...
- Number23, on 03/10/2008, -4/+8BMW Cuts at Home, Builds Up US Factories
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1983122/p ...
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- On one side of the Atlantic Ocean, BMW says it will cut 7.5 percent of its work force over two years. On this side of the water, the company says it plans to increase production by more than 50 percent by 2012.
"This is completely driven by the plunge in the dollar," said Greg Gardner with Oliver Wyman, publisher of the Harbour Report on automotive manufacturing activity. "It is untenable to produce at a much higher cost in Germany."
The euro climbed to record heights Friday, reaching $1.5463 before falling back to $1.5335 in late trading after the Federal Reserve announced it would provide more cash to banks that need it. That means European goods cost more for Americans to buy.- Number23, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5Sorry, here's the AP link

- luke374, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1So basically now we're becoming the third world country that produces cheap labor?
- Number23, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1It's got to be tough to be a liberal, there is no making you happy. These are the sort of high paying, skilled factory jobs you lib-tards are constantly screaming about.

- rrife, on 03/10/2008, -12/+0As soon as counterfeiters start making copies of the Euro currency, in large quantities, the value will drop and the US dollar will be more competitive.
- tomjm5000, on 03/10/2008, -0/+7also.... i dont think counterfeiters ever do enough to depreciate currency... where did you get that idea?
- PeterchensMF, on 03/16/2008, -0/+0thanx dude
- tomjm5000, on 03/10/2008, -7/+19Try being an American living over in Europe... their best diet coke impression costs $5
- Myonosken, on 03/10/2008, -5/+34Probably because we don't drink as much of that sugary *****.
Edit: Oh sorry, DIET coke. *non-sugary but full of artificial crap *****. Better? - sandman979, on 03/10/2008, -6/+3So true! Coca Cola is like a currency there. And tastes like crap too!
- gak001, on 03/10/2008, -4/+12You mean... Coke Light?
- AuldNic, on 03/10/2008, -9/+4nah he means DIET - all americans are fat
- dominikkom, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6No AuldNic,
That's what "Diet coke" is called in Europe.- davori, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Nope, We Have Diet Coke, and Coke Zero (or bloke coke). Basically the same product but one being aimed towards females and the other males respectively.
- dominikkom, on 03/10/2008, -1/+1Must be different in each country
- goodhorsehymn, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Not all of Europe has Coke Light...it's still Diet Coke in the UK.
- devonkeale, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5It's Coke Light in France, and it's not quite $5. I'd say like $1.75 maybe for a 1.5 L bottle, after adjusted for currency...
That is, unless you're doing your grocery shopping at tourist kiosks...- tomjm5000, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3Ew, it's Coca light, and I am in France, and any sandwich place runs over 2 euro for a small bottle.
- Suricou, on 03/10/2008, -1/+8Substitute tea. Besides, have you ever tried getting clotted cream in the US?
- darlingt, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Advanced Tea Substitute?
- waldo686, on 03/10/2008, -6/+3Tea? haha fag
- redneckblues, on 03/10/2008, -2/+1Iced tea is good here in the South.
- sadGuru, on 03/10/2008, -7/+16americans feed on big macs and thing that diet coke will make a difference :D
- gak001, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Or maybe they just like the taste better. I know plenty of people who prefer Diet Coke to Coke (believe it or not) and they get really ***** off when you point out that little nugget of wit.
- choppergirl, on 03/10/2008, -10/+7Yes, but in Europe you can actually buy bottled water thats not brown, doesn't have some kind of weird chemical bubbles coming out of it, and isn't so corrupted with acid you have to cover the taste with spoonfuls of sugar. Real fresh water should be clean, so you can see through it, with no bubbles other than oxygen, and have a fresh neutral taste.
- sugarhooker, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4We have clean water in America as well. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.
In Europe you have that gross carbonated water *****. How do you people stay hydrated? Seriously.- CeeJayDK, on 03/10/2008, -0/+8We drink beer ! ;-)
- coyote1284, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Are you trying to say bottled water does not exist in the US and the only bottled beverage one can buy here is Coca-Cola? Seriously?
- tugger, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2No, in the EU, bottled water has to come out of the ground otherwise you're not allowed to charge for it, and in the US most bottled water is simply filtered through about 1/2 a centimeter of porcelain (if you're lucky).
Coka-cola made the mistake of setting up a huge filtering plant on the Thames in london without reading the rules...
D'oh!!! - ChristianMagic, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1No, our bottled water is clean enough, it's just a scam cause it's the same as our tap water which is fine.
- sugarhooker, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4We have clean water in America as well. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.
- dominikkom, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4There is a Diet coke, but its marketed as Coke light
- blacktriangle, on 03/10/2008, -1/+14For god sakes man, you drink Aspartame?
- pirloui, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6Never seen a Coke Light costing more than 1€60 for 1,5 liter (france + netherland)
- germanSauron, on 03/10/2008, -0/+199cent for 1.5 litres in germany - but for reasons unknown to me, we have afaik the cheapest food and beverage prices in north-western-europe, though we are rich as hell.
- Takayama, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3You realize this was probably a bottle with refundable deposit?
For our American friends who might be unfamilliar with the concept: Europeans do have a system for returning used bottles so that the can be cleaned/refilles or recycled instead of joining the landfill. To encourage this, you pay a small amount of between 9€ct. and 50 €ct that you get back when you turn the bottle in. Works pretty well, much less litter besides the roads. - redb369, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4So do we. The amount differs by state.
