- Nidy1, on 07/03/2008, -1/+72Hate to be picky, but as a firefighter I can tell you that that wasn't a backdraft. It was more similar to a flashover, though I think the gas might have just been pushed out due to the building collapse.
A backdraft is when the fire is starved of oxygen and it is suddenly introduced. A flashover is when the fire gets so hot that the Carbon Monoxide ignites (around 1100 degrees F, I think). - ExGhost, on 07/02/2008, -2/+27That's what I call a beautiful tragedy
- MedicalMatt, on 07/02/2008, -4/+24it was an inside job!
- Regulator980, on 07/03/2008, -0/+19Backdraft Explosion at 1:50.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -2/+17that's intense!
- SebG, on 07/03/2008, -1/+15Yup, im a firefighter too. Thats def. not a backdraft.
- jameslhwalker, on 07/03/2008, -1/+15Flashover occurs when the majority of surfaces in a space are heated to the point (known as fire point) at which they give off flammable gases that are hot enough to sustain combustion. Flashover normally occurs at 500 °C (930 °F) for ordinary household combustibles: wikipedia
- tomarnk, on 07/03/2008, -0/+13Why the ***** is this in comedy?!
- Mswldflwr, on 07/03/2008, -1/+13As much as I hate to see others' misfortune, that was quite a sight to see.
- Jackar00, on 07/03/2008, -3/+14comedy?!?!?!
- louiebaur, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13Damn that was crazy!
- saxmaster, on 07/02/2008, -0/+10I sure hope nobody was inside
- AmyVernon, on 07/02/2008, -0/+10that's really well put...
- Chalks777, on 07/03/2008, -2/+12I would have enjoyed this much more if the first minute had been cut out.
- xDynaBlade, on 07/03/2008, -1/+9That wasn't a backdraft. A backdraft is when the fire is starved of oxygen and it all of a sudden gets a rush of air. That fire was big the whole time, must have been gas.
- rhombus77, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7I agree with Nidy1, Jameslhwalker and Sebg. I am a firefighter too and that definitely wasn't a backdraft. I will put myself out there and say it wasn't a flashover either. From my (limited) experience, CO ignitions look different.
- wishninja, on 07/02/2008, -2/+9I love fire.
- jmreid, on 07/03/2008, -2/+9Personally, i can tell by the pixels.
- g00ee, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Yeah, this could have been condensed into about 5-10 seconds of video.
- MrMetal, on 07/03/2008, -7/+12I have a total backdraft explosion boner right now.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6That's what she said. :-}
- ChadN, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4That was just a straightforward collapse. The structural integrity gives out, the roof falls and blows the air and fire out the windows. Not an explosion, implosion, backdraft or anything fancy.
- godphase3, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4News story about this:

As a firefigter, I also agree that that this likely wasn;t backdraft. The building is so heavily involved I find it very hard to believe there was an un-breached portion, and that if there is that it would be so big that it would cause that great of a backdraft explosion. - SebG, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4That was not a backdraft.
- jmreid, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Stop talking about your mother like that. Just awful.
- MrMax99, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Yea they need to delete about 2 minutes of this.
- Renostyle, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I agree. Not a backdraft. That looks like a roof collapse, which subsequently collapsed the rest of the weakened structure.
- tnoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Translation: The first 1:50 is completely pointless.
- krnldmp, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I think the gas you're talking about was vaporizing off all the hot ***** from the fire. In the beginning you see it go out around the windows, and then all of a sudden the windows are alight as the air starts rushing in. The whole thing is apparently sitting on the edge of a perfect mixture, which I guess it suddenly got.
- pagno, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Ya know what sucks about being a Baldwin?
Nothing! - oaktree, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1No, it's Die In A Fire!
- jordanlgta, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2I want to see a DVD case copy of Backdraft obliterating the building. Get to it Photoshoppers!
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 07/03/2008, -5/+6I smell controlled demolition. Everybody knows fire can't make a building collapse!!!!
- scooterbaga, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1What was it?
- jmreid, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Yes, in tents indeed.
- pagno, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Dugg for Waffle House.
- tofucrew, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Hard to tell, but it looks like type II construction? Self vented, heavy fire load, rapid increase in fire behavior with a resulting collapse. Makes overhaul easy; let the truck go home, and have the engine soak it for an hour or so.
Would make a good training video for new guys: the line between offensive and defensive varies from department to department, but this is certainly defensive; this is why we have collapse zones; and this is nice example of extreme fire behavior. - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1get the hell out of the way. damn!
- Flashtone, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Chuck Norris farted.
- Nidy1, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Right, but find me someone who calls it a 'rich flashover' and not a backdraft. And if you were trying to imply that it was a 'rich flashover' that happened in the video, you clearly don't understand what you just posted.
- georgebnet, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashover#Different_t ...
A rich flashover occurs when the flammable gases are ignited while at the upper region of the flammability range. This can happen in rooms where the fire subsided because of lack of oxygen. The ignition source can be a smouldering object, or the stirring up of embers by the air track. The internationally accepted scientific definition of such an event is known as 'backdraft'. - johndajap56, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!
-sorry had to - Stopikingonme, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1Flashover...not backdraft.
- topbob, on 07/03/2008, -3/+2Holy ***** ***** ***** *****...
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+0culinary?
- lhodsdon, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1Woah!
- twtmc, on 07/03/2008, -4/+2Guys! We need more fake and gay material for the front page!
- pagno, on 07/03/2008, -3/+1***** off and die.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -9/+6You can tell by the shadows and by doing a few firefights in your time?
- hollywoodphony, on 07/03/2008, -5/+2This wasn't the Ron Howard movie. No Baldwins. :(
