- hagerman, on 12/31/2008, -13/+1054No... there are other deals going on that drive down the cost. Right now PayPal has a deal going on where you get $10 back on a purchase of $50.00 or more. A few weeks ago live.com had a offer where you got 30% of an eBay purchase if you found the item through live and eBay knocked off an additional 10% on top of that.

- Pecheckler, on 01/01/2009, -13/+146Step 1.) Steal someone's PayPal and eBay credentials via widespread malware.
Step 2.) Bid on gift cards.
Step 3.) Upon winning the auction, ask the seller to give you the gift card code via email, instead of mailing it.
If the Seller does it, he or she takes the loss, as the rightful PayPal account holder will win the dispute. - Chooxo, on 01/01/2009, -4/+116You really can't stop laughing at it?
Really?? - AriaStar, on 01/01/2009, -6/+113I've been buying and selling on eBay since 1998. At times, I have sold items for more than their retail. I speculate that buyers sometimes get caught up in the wanting-to-win aspect and lose sight of the value of what they're bidding on. Rather than see if the same item is available from another seller for less, they sometimes just want to beat the person who keeps outbidding them.
- zymosis, on 01/01/2009, -1/+103Oh that's how you use ebay. You type in what you are searching for.
- vipertech, on 01/01/2009, -22/+116No, ebayers aren't that stupid... people are. This world is full of noobs.
- Ghostalker, on 01/01/2009, -8/+94It's amazing how people keep our economy going.

http://shop.ebay.com/items/ebay%20gift%20card - ayeroxor, on 01/01/2009, -6/+73"10% is twise ebay's profit margin
It isn' twise to spell like that on Digg. - gidd, on 01/01/2009, -2/+66It's possible these are international buyers. Buying gift cards is the easiest way of getting access to the US iTunes Store without a US-registered Credit Card. Simply set up an account without a CC, and redeem a gift card on that account.
Since different countries' iTunes Stores have different content (esp. when it comes to movies and TV shows), it's worth it.
*cough* Someone I met once *cough* often buys one of these on eBay rather than torrenting everything, but you can usually find a much better price than that. It's certainly against the iTunes T&Cs, but it's less illegal than just BT'ing the content. - Visual77, on 01/01/2009, -0/+60You use the address of a known empty home (and in this economy, that's easy to find), make sure you order things with no signature required, and watch the house for a delivery. Once it has been delivered, make the pickup.
- KyleGoetz, on 01/01/2009, -3/+58And then when you use the gift card and have the item delivered, the address of the thief (i.e., you) will be all over the business records of Amazon or whoever. Enjoy getting caught.
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -6/+59Well once I sold my Wii and the buy out price was 350 and the winning bidder ended up paying 365 for it.......not that I was complaining.
- WriterSD, on 01/01/2009, -0/+49Wow...
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -1/+49It's not a scam if they buy a wii for twice the price, it just means they are idiots.

Temporary physical mail address? - Paulorific, on 01/01/2009, -1/+37Let me eBay that for you.
- forfeitalaska, on 01/01/2009, -1/+37Ebayers are not people?!
- drstunner, on 01/01/2009, -1/+37Read the post more carefully. If Live.com and eBay are both going to knock money off for buying something through eBay, then it makes sense to buy a gift card for Amazon from eBay even if you pay more than the card is worth.
i.e. You pay 55 dollars for a 50 dollar gift card on eBay, and they knock off 40% so you're actually only paying 30 some dollars. - mhuggins, on 01/01/2009, -2/+38Yeah, in other words you have to pay $50 to activate it.

- JCH897, on 01/01/2009, -1/+31Wow, I just sold an $80 Radio Shack gift card for way less than it was worth. Looks like I was doing something wrong.
- pittpat, on 01/01/2009, -5/+35you better be careful....you'll get buried for mentioning actually paying for something here on digg!
- SystemHasFailed, on 01/01/2009, -1/+30I just outbid you. Sorry.
- spartarising, on 01/01/2009, -0/+25#1 Live Cashback only works on Buy It Now items, these are all normal auctions
#2 The cashback program ended a few weeks ago. - Opheicus, on 01/01/2009, -7/+32The submitter is obviously unaware of Live Cashback.
- betheturtle, on 01/01/2009, -2/+27"What I bought... on eBay"
- keithsmills, on 01/01/2009, -4/+28I live in Canada and I can't make purchases from Amazon.com (only Amazon.ca), so if I were looking for an Amazon.com gift card for someone, I don't think I could purchase it directly from Amazon, in which case I wouldn't mind paying a minimal service charge in order to buy exactly what I need.
The $2 to $3 premium most of the auctions appear to be charging seems like a fair convenience charge to me. - Dumbledorito, on 01/01/2009, -2/+24"My house... is filled with... this crap..."
- MikeSetera, on 01/01/2009, -1/+22"Shows up... in... bubblewrap"
- muchenik, on 01/01/2009, -1/+22Like hagerman said, there is many programs available to drop the price to well below or at least match the price of the product.
Now the problem comes down to finding a reliable seller and buyer. Since the item you purchase may be already used or Pecheckler said below, someone may be willing to purchase a giftcard regardless of the cost because they are using a fraudulent account. - hagerman, on 01/01/2009, -0/+21The submitter spammed the story in a bunch of comments:

WTF are people thinking buying a gift card with no value - skeetshot, on 01/01/2009, -3/+24*****.
- DouglasQ, on 01/01/2009, -2/+22Also auctioning.
- jfreeman, on 01/01/2009, -1/+21With this scheme, you could sell the card back and forth between you and a friend and make a ***** of money.
