- neognostic, on 08/30/2009, -7/+53Silverman is about as funny as a thrown brick.
- Podunkparte, on 08/31/2009, -4/+28Zack Galifianakis and Patton Oswalt are geniuses. So funny
- charlatan, on 08/31/2009, -3/+23Silverman is bad and you should feel bad.
- zantos420, on 08/31/2009, -4/+19a well placed thrown brick can be pretty funny depending on who/what it hits. never underestimate proper context.
silverman is just an attention grabbing, no talent, ass clown.
she's like the female tom green. - RudeTurnip, on 08/31/2009, -4/+16Dane Cook (and Nickelback) sucks.
- westtexas357, on 08/31/2009, -0/+10Once I saw this guy who wore a fake arrow through his head and played a banjo !
It seemed edgy at the time. - 4AntiStupid, on 08/31/2009, -0/+6Alternative anything has always been a marketing gimmick.
- hobbes1339, on 08/31/2009, -4/+10If we live in a world where Silverman is funny, then i'd rather not live anymore.
- FeloniusMonkey, on 08/31/2009, -1/+7I hope this means Will Ferrell will stop making movies.
- FoxFaction, on 08/31/2009, -0/+6I think, as people are exposed to vastly more information though the internet, more people come to prefer absurdist/alternative comedy.
- brainboy7777, on 08/31/2009, -1/+6***** this "alternative comedy", go watch some Richard Pryor. Hell, even Seinfeld's pretty good, back in the old days.
- dabigguy3, on 08/31/2009, -1/+6Im sorry but comedy just does not get better than Richard Pryor and Dave Chapelle.
- ZenMojo, on 08/31/2009, -2/+7Other people think she sucks too? I think I shed a tear of joy...
- t0x2c, on 08/31/2009, -3/+8In other news, IQ scores are dropping rapidly.
- t0x2c, on 08/31/2009, -0/+4Actually it just means everyone else in this world is just as ***** up as you.
- GalacticRerun, on 08/31/2009, -2/+6@CB810, maybe she is. It'd be nice if she could put some of that funny on her awful TV show.
- inactive, on 08/31/2009, -1/+5"alternative" comedy has been the only basically the only type of comedy (working mens clubs in rundown ***** not notwithstanding) since the 80's anyway.
The tag "alternative" is hate inspiring. - Mujokan, on 08/31/2009, -0/+4You could maybe argue edgier comedy is more popular in tougher times. Victorian slums had really extreme music halls. In the Thirties you had the Marx Brothers and Charlie Chaplin. In the oil crisis you had Monty Python, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor. In the 1980s there was that comedy movement in Britain that had Rik Mayall, Ben Elton, Alexei Sayle, etc and keeps going in say Absolutely Fabulous. But in the post-war boom you had mostly just guys like Jack Benny or Bob Hope, who were funny but not exactly edgy.
- hairysandwich, on 08/31/2009, -6/+9The only two in the list I am somewhat familiar with is Tenacious D and Sarah Silverman. Tenacious D is hilarious, however I think Sarah Silverman should stop wasting her time and ours, she isn't funny at all.
- CB810, on 08/30/2009, -3/+6The alt-comedy scene in LA is chock full of talent. Silverman, Galifianakis, Tenacious D, Bob Odenirk, David Cross, Paul F. Thompkins, Doug Benson, Patton Oswalt, Greg Beherent have emerged and made some noise. there are many more waiting in the wings...
- naner, on 08/31/2009, -1/+4The day I see pedobear on a mainstream comedy show is the day I know my sense of humor isn't as ***** up as I thought it was.
- OddBrian, on 08/31/2009, -0/+3Would you consider, then, that Dane Cook is the Nickelback of comedy?
Alternatively, Nickelback is the Dane Cook of rock? - Mujokan, on 08/31/2009, -0/+3Steve Martin's memoir of his early days in comedy is worth reading.
- UberObie, on 08/31/2009, -0/+2If you guys want to catch something amazing and actually pushing limits of both the audience and the art form, you need to check out the UK's Stewart Lee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8u-IE9qc5U&fea ... He's the hero of a lot of young comics coming up today.
And, if you'll pardon the shameless plug, you could also check out me: http://mikecomedy.com - mrsneakypat, on 08/31/2009, -0/+2David Cross = Tobias from Arrested Development
- brainboy7777, on 08/31/2009, -0/+2I've never seen Bob Odenkirk's stand-up, but he literally stole the show with his stint on Breaking Bad. He should get an award for playing Saul Goodman.
- Nhoji, on 08/31/2009, -0/+2Eugene Mirman is the future.
- TurboTex, on 08/31/2009, -1/+2Patton has been hilarious on all of the Roasts I've seen him in, but, in all honesty, I thought his recent stand up special was less than stellar. I found his few minutes of roasting funnier than his whole hour of stand up.
- AlexanderCurtis, on 08/31/2009, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXRlzsyp7ww#t=2m35s
- t0x2c, on 08/31/2009, -0/+1Not really relevant to the point I was making but probably true.
- eamonman, on 08/31/2009, -0/+1Well if funnyordie completely gets bought out, then he'd actually be free to make ANYthing he wants.
Sigh.
Not that he doesn't have enough money to do that already though.... - askantik, on 08/31/2009, -3/+4Agreed. Sarah Silverman is ***** disgusting.
- Hetman, on 08/31/2009, -1/+1Aziz Ansari FTW.
- brainboy7777, on 08/31/2009, -1/+1That ***** is not funny
- foxhaze4, on 08/31/2009, -1/+0I'm Ron Burgundy?
- foxhaze4, on 08/31/2009, -1/+0That's because the ACT is better than the SAT.
- foxhaze4, on 08/31/2009, -1/+0LOL @ stupid.
- ericdano, on 08/31/2009, -3/+2Silverman is terrible. I have no clue how she got her "show". Or that Demriti Martin guy. Or that "Michael and Michael have issues". All those shows and "Comedians" are terrible. Not funny at all.
However, there are some that shine......except I can't remember them.......figures..... - FredFredrickson, on 08/31/2009, -2/+1If these people are "alternative" comedy, then I guess that's what I like. Can't say I'm a big fan of Sarah Silverman though - for only one reason: she's not that funny.
- foxhaze4, on 08/31/2009, -1/+0moar?
- OddBrian, on 08/31/2009, -2/+0"In the 1980s there was that comedy movement in Britain that had Rik Mayall, Ben Elton, Alexei Sayle, etc"
That was the first alternative comedy movement. That stuff was funny without excessively obsessing in crassness. It only occassionally dabbled in fart jokes.
Today, it's considered alternative if you say, "I poopited". - mbraynard, on 08/31/2009, -4/+2Half right - re: Zack.
He did some great stuff on Tim and Eric. - foxhaze4, on 08/31/2009, -3/+1Actually, she probably IS Tom Green. He did lose his nuts to cancer after all.
- 1x253, on 08/31/2009, -6/+3David Cross has ripped off most of his material, tone and delivery from a much, much greater comic: the late, great Bill Hicks. I've never heard or read about David Cross ever paying tribute to Bill Hick's legacy.
In a 2005 poll to find The Comedian's Comedian, fellow comedians and comedy insiders voted Hicks #13 on their list of "The Top 20 Greatest Comedy Acts Ever".
On February 25, 2004, British MP Stephen Pound tabled an early day motion titled "Anniversary of the Death of Bill Hicks" (EDM 678 of the 2003-04 session), the text of which was as follows:
“ That this House notes with sadness the 10th anniversary of the death of Bill Hicks, on 26th February 1994, at the age of 32; recalls his assertion that his words would be a bullet in the heart of consumerism, capitalism and the American Dream; and mourns the passing of one of the few people who may be mentioned as being worthy of inclusion with Lenny Bruce and George Carlin in any list of unflinching and painfully honest political philosophers.
David Cross will never, EVER be spoken about in such a way b/c people who know comedy know he's just riding on coat tails. - 1x253, on 08/31/2009, -5/+1***** Sarah Silverman for breaking Jimmy Kimmels heart! In fact, probably the only funny thing she's ever done is the way she broke poor old Jimmy's heart:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLG3S5WzHig - CB810, on 08/31/2009, -8/+2Take a minute, search those names on YouTube and prepare to laugh. And Sarah Silverman is very, very funny. Deal.
