- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45Clown around all you want, it's scientific FACT that dihydrogen monoxide is responsible for over 99% of drownings in the entire WORLD.
- ZeitMachina, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25> Activist Sign Petition That Bans Water
"Anti-activist has difficulty with plural verbs." - senorcool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20This video just shows how polls of any sort, be it presidential appeal, local tax, etc. are in no way accurate. Anyone who uses polls as facts are just as wrong as those polls.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I think we should stick to more important subject matter, such as ending women's suffrage.
- stonewaljacksn, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26kinda funny...just too bad penn is bent on making fun of people and alienating them more than making his legitimate point.
- scarybunnyman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15and your point is? They simply attacked the tendency of people to sign on and support movements which they have no knowledge of? And no ***** its not an unbiased source... they never claim to be. Its not a documentary or news report... its ENTERTAINMENT. They're even quoted in the family values episode as saying "We're biased as all *****. But, we try to be honest".
On a side not, I almost enjoyed that as much as their bottled water "experiment"
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2862517610301228131&hl=en - thruandthru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is awesome. I will digg this until kingdom come because it is frustrating to see people support or push for issues that they themselves know very little about because they just want to jump on the bandwagon. I love when the girl getting people to sign the petition is talking to a woman and is telling this woman the effects of H2O...
Girl: "...it causes a lot of urination, vomiting sometimes..."
Woman: "Yeah I'm familiar with it." (as she is signing the petition to ban water)
wow. - nysus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The problem with this clip is the they insinuate that environmentalism is not based on sound science and that it's powered by a bunch of well-intentioned but clueless do-gooders. This clip is but a caricature of one small aspect environmental activism and is not representative of the entire movement which very much based on the scientific method.
Bottom line: if your worldview is shaped by Penn & Teller entertainment shows, you are in just as much trouble as the people signing this petition. - BrasilianMK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Are you actually so naive as to believe that news and documentaries are unbiased?
When preparing for their show, news reporters have hundreds, if not thousands of stories to chose from, and they could easily dedicate several hours featuring any one item. Instead they have to choose a few of those stories and then they choose what to say about that story. News reports are as biased as anything else - they usually try to hide that fact though. The same thing also applies to documentaries. By choosing which facts to tell you and which ones they will not "because of time constraints" they can tell you facts and make you believe almost anything they want you to. - theberlindoctor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7this is one of the best shows on television. hands down. i feel like a better human being after watching it.
this show should be on public broadcasting.
if you can, try to catch the shows on recycling and the drug war. - unfinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, plural nouns. what you want is:
*Activists* Sign Petition That Bans Water
Because there're more than one activist. - Ibanezfoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Ah, the ***** series... I own them all on DVD! I love how they show modern hippies and environmentalists for what they really are.... The best part of that episode is they actually have the founder of Greenpeace on there ripping on all these modern day tree huggers.
- johnnyrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's like people 'digging' a story on digg...without actually reading it!
- ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5but it is a necisary evil!
http://www.dhmo.org - jerr0328, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4how do the rest of 1% drown? Do they stick their face in a tub of pure ammonia or something?
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@brasilianmk
They may be biased but they have a requirement not to be, the point he was making is that Entertainment is in no way obligated to be unbiased. - BrasilianMK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ royal64. You should read articles before you quote them. According to the article, the kid was not the originator of the whole idea. My science textbook listed the same thing to illustrate the dangers of accepting everything that environmentalists say without investigating for yourself.
- spriggig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You name it and someone has drown in it. Ewww!
- dixonHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@royal64: "This kid was the original person who did this, and he deserves credit."
Hmm...a couple minutes research shows that's not true. From a very informative article on the Intarweb: "Zohner's project wasn't original...[he] based his project on a bogus report that was already making the rounds of the internet."
In case you're looking for that insightful report, it's the one you pointed to. You may want to read it.
@brasilianmk: Ah, I see you read the article! :-) - joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That bit is classic.
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I am not claiming his views are invalid because of this association, merely that he is not an unbiased third party to the issue."
What?!? Biased people are being allowed to host TV shows?!?!? TELL ME IT ISNT TRUE! [/sarcasm] - ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This really is a great episode and I suggest watching the whole thing. It's just amazing how many modern environmentalists and hippies are completely uninformed on the issues they are so "passionate" about.
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Any dumbass should know what Dihydrogen Monoxide is. It's basic High school chemistry. The point is not only that people sign stuff when they don't know what it is but the problem is also that people don't know what it is as well.
- southwestnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Rikkochet
also hydroxic acid, let us not forget that! - KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a newer version of candid camera did the same thing years ago...
- agalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People need to actually think. Not just follow.
- xlivetodayx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Penn and Teller are *****.
- Ibanezfoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Please don't ever vote. If you don't want to take the time to research something you create a strong opinion on, its best just to remain quiet.
- Ibanezfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They aren't dicks. They are telling it how it is. You should see the episode about violent overthrow of an oppressive government.........
- Nateon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha! This is the little joke that your highschool chemistry pulls on you at the beginning of the year! Classic!
- BrasilianMK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't doubt it, but where did you get that statistic?
- kansascowboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2what if someone told you that a certain substance is in pesticides, gets into ppl's food, is in acid rain and dangerous precipitation, etc.? i know that i would attempt to ban it. who really sits down and says "hmmm dihydrogen monoxide-lets write this out" and take all the time to figure out that its water after hearing about all the problems, deaths, and destruction that it's related to
- itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This proves nothing about the environmental movement. All this footage proves is that Americans are dumb as *****, but we already knew that. The real story here (Which, predictably, Penn and Teller don't follow up because it's a complex explanation) is how the American Science education system is lagging up to 40 years behind the rest of the world.
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+274% of all statistics are made up, so don't believe that crap.
- chochazel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Signing a petition banning water because it can be made to sound dangerous is pretty irrational and silly, but it reveals an aspect of human nature that we tend to be extremely naive and trusting of facts and information that support our existing opinions and overly skeptical and cynical about those that disagree. In this sense it is a enlightening exercise.
However, it seems a missed opportunity and misleading to try to use this methodology to try to attack one particular political ideology when you can go to any political event and get some people to sign carefully worded nonsense petitions. Also for any point of view, there are going to be stupid people that subscribe to it (usually the majority), and more well informed people that subscribe to it.
Therefore, it is as irrational to think that this proves anything specifically about environmentalism as it is to sign the petition. You could use the same ad hominem techniques on any strongly held belief.
Yes it shows some people have no critical thinking skills when faced with information that supports their world view.
Yes it shows a flaw in polls and vox pops.
No it doesn't reveal anything unique to environmentalism.
No it clearly doesn't mean that there aren't environmental contaminants, or that all environmental concerns are baseless. - BrasilianMK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't doubt it, but where did you get that statistic.
- Ibanezfoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Have you watched the whole episode?
- itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1As I've mentioned in this thread already, they're not "telling it like it is", they're just demonstrating that most people are too ***** stupid thanks to the ***** American education system. I'd like to see this experiment repeated in another country. Most Americans are really really trusting, which is beautiful, but as things like this demonstrate it's also really dangerous when combined with ignorance.
- anand78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0OMFG Science is what US needs badly and not intelligent design.
- Gtitian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I really like Penn Jillette and a lot of the stuff he says. They made some really fantastic points on that show, but unfortunately, I lot of people (uber-die-hard-libertarians mostly) tend to quote him and that show to support totally ludicrous "laisefaire" ideologies. It's like when something good (nuclear power) is used for evil (nuclear bombs)
- OggVorbis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Umm.....Never mind.......
- LoPhatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This may seem like a simple prank but I've seen these two in action before, it is really part of a right wing plot, and these two are part of the same machine that tasered that girl. Believe it!!
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Your link was so good it actually deserves it's own submission to Digg:
http://digg.com/videos/people/Hidden_camera_People_pay_6_50_for_a_glas_of_water - subxero37, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"Plural verbs" somewhat makes sense, meaning that the verb isn't conjugated properly to receive multiple subjects (nouns.)
- belfastbiker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1It's a hippie festival.
The chemical she wants banned starts wth hydrogen, ends in monoxide. How much scarier can it sound? The only issue here is one of too much trust.
When did Penn & Teller become dicks?
EDIT: Ah.... Cato Institute. Says it all. - Bidofthis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This was an act of plagiarism by P&T

Actually I heard of people doing this a few years ago in my HS Chem class, most of us didn't believe people were so stupid, but I guess they are. ;-) - frankverdi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Ban DHMO!
