telegraph.co.uk — It cost £14,000 to create, but clearly no-one at the smart London design outfit that came up with the new logo for HM Treasury thought to turn it on its side. Hilarity ensues and embarrassment all-round.

There's no doubt that logo design should really be taken into consideration but that's just a font with all caps (or small caps) and kerned in so that they're touching. There's nothing too fancy about it and I would be upset if I paid that much and got that logo. On the other hand, the final logo decision isn't really made by the creators but the buyers. So there may have been way more creative logos that they shot down.

There are multiple designers, multiple creative directors, and all of the support people in between. It's not just the logo, but it's all the branding revolving around the logo, down to which fonts to use where, how much spacing is required around the logo, what colors are acceptible, etc. Sometimes more than one agency is involved in the re-branding. There are demographic studies, sometimes even interactive trials. The logo is made in multiple formats for a variety of different media (digital, print, stencils, embrodiery, video, etc.). Sometimes promo material is created with multiple logo options so one can be chosen after seeing some of the ways it can be used, so they might have had sample business cards made, sample embroidered polo shirts, sample mugs, etc. Maybe even a 3d rendering of the front of their office with the new logo above the door. I don't know how much my company had spent on it, but it was a heck of a lot more than 14,000.

      Nobody asks a doctor to fix your heart for 50 dollars, likewise I am not going to work for 50 dollars on a single design, it is not like I have 1,000 clients in line ready for me to do 10 minute work each to keep my rent paid.

      But it's mostly because the artist had to generate hundreds and hundreds of designs and variations, looking for the most efficient one that gives the message within the logo.

      A good logo will communicate its message all within 2 seconds. A bad one will be confusing, irrelevant to the company, or... well... gives the wrong message....

It normally breaks down into around £5 or £6k spent in time attending briefings, consulting people involved and market research of the industry the company operates in.

      Then there'll be a few days in the design studio which with a Creative director, copywriter and designer will be charged out at around £3k a day they'll produce normally three or four routes which will be put to the client, often involving the team presenting to a conference or meeting of people in the company.

      Finally after the route is chosen by the client the designs have to be finalised, and a brand guidelines document created indicating how the logo will be used in different scenarios, such as in print, online or outdoor. Different variations will also be created for use in black and white and reversed out colours.
