I've worked out that in order to have any sort of relationship with my Fox/Limbaugh-loving dad that I need to withhold my opinion. When I have stated my counter-opinion to one of his bombs he drops in conversation ("Obama is such a liar, I wonder if he'll ever tell the truth about anything?") he acts like a baby, all hurt and like the big pussy he is. - hawkspur, on 06/23/2009, -0/+61I live in Texas. I pretty much don't speak with my family about anything that is potentially contentious, lest God smite my sinful, skeptic heart down.
- sousademiami, on 06/22/2009, -3/+57What a douchebag. Target IS way better than Wal-Mart!
- randomerratum, on 06/22/2009, -0/+46Happy Fathers Day!
- pingveno, on 06/22/2009, -4/+47Just when I thought I had learned to detect headlines from The Onion another one slips through. :(
And, as always, The Onion gives an insightful view of US culture. - raitchison, on 06/22/2009, -2/+40Man that reminds me of my life, originally all Republicans I have become more libertarian leaning while my family has followed most of the rest of the party into neo-con craziness.
- GovernmentsGun, on 06/23/2009, -0/+31Funny article, but it really is a sad situation when you have to be the most closed with the people who are most supposed to accept you. Many families, my in-laws included, just think that proximity equals a relationship.
- MatthewDuke, on 06/23/2009, -3/+32I'll argue with acquaintances about politics and religion.
When I'm with my family I soak up the love, because I can't get that anywhere else and my parents aren't going to live forever. Who gives a rat's ass about politics and religion when I'm watching a football game with my Dad on a sunday afternoon? Those happy memories will sustain me in life long after he's gone. - SpykerSpeed, on 06/23/2009, -4/+32God you're so right.
I refuse to put up with that "I'M THE PATRIARCH" bullcrap from my own grandfather. Just because you ***** and had kids doesn't mean anybody owes you anything. - lnxfi, on 06/23/2009, -4/+28Target > Walmart > A used toilet > Kmart
- TrevorBradley, on 06/23/2009, -0/+22Dad?
- asgardshill, on 06/23/2009, -2/+21Dugg, from a small voice of sanity living in the midst of a Fox News-addicted, Limbaugh Letter-subscribing hole in the world.
- dafragsta, on 06/23/2009, -0/+19That's why Texas has Austin. It's not secular, it's sec-tacular! ;)
- feelmypimphand, on 06/23/2009, -0/+18Even today, when I'm struggling with my game, I can hear my dad say,
"Pick a spot and just hit it."
- Tiger Woods
I wonder what the birds and the bees talk sounded like... - charlie6969, on 06/22/2009, -2/+20You sure that was from the onion?
Sounded just about right, in my humble opinion.lol - dty2010, on 06/23/2009, -1/+19I have to do the same thing, but I live with my family. :(
- funhouse1970, on 06/22/2009, -0/+16Sadly, it's the truth.
- Alias1431, on 06/23/2009, -0/+15It's so cute to hear my sweet, racist grandmother talk about Obama.
- Bloodwine, on 06/23/2009, -6/+20Obama isn't exactly exuding truthiness.
However, I just find it best to not discuss politics with real life family and friends for the sake of relaxations and maintaining relationships. I'll leave political discussions to the internet trolls. - Wavemancali, on 06/23/2009, -0/+13"Pick a spot and just hit it."
- ladysherwood, on 06/23/2009, -2/+15Wal-Mart shoppers as a demographic group in general stress me out. Plus, during the holidays you can shop in peace without the annoying bell-ringers that are pretty much everywhere else in the city. Thank you Target. You make the extra 10 cents I spend on shampoo or whatever in your store totally worth it.
- RusskiGuy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+13Funny but OLD. When I saw it talk about Legally Blond 2, I looked at the date and it's from 2003...
- ThanatosST, on 06/23/2009, -1/+13but target doesn't sell ammo :(
- shooper, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11Dugg for finishing it off with a dig at Celine Dion.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -2/+13You can choose your friends, unfortunately, you can't choose your family...
- NinjaBoy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+10Please elaborate that sounds like an awesome story.
- oboshoe, on 06/23/2009, -6/+16Enjoy your days with your grandfather and put aside the silly political crap.
He won't be around long and someday when he's gone, you'll look back and regret being petty over silly politics (that neither of you have control over anyway) - CoreyTamas, on 06/23/2009, -1/+10There is something to be said for putting aside stuff that doesn't matter and appreciating the people in your life while they're still with you.
- Cern001, on 06/23/2009, -1/+9I do spend more on my groceries at Target vs Walmart. However, I don't have to deal with all the white trash so that makes it worth it.
- Hetman, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8I thought this was pretty common to be honest with you.
- alpha94, on 06/23/2009, -1/+9I always make the mistake of speaking my mind with my family. I find it too hard to keep my mouth shut, even though I know what it will lead to.
- RobotBuddha, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8@oboshoe
Meh. My grandma was racist, hateful, and petty. I'm happy I spent time being happy rather than hanging around her when she was alive. Old people are still people, relative or not. And there's a lot of people who are just rotten, glory in the sadness of others, and are unpleasant to be around. - dafragsta, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8In the days of Facebook, this awkwardness is only going to spill over into more than the visits.
- Jeepinator, on 06/23/2009, -1/+9Any sort of groceries at Target are more expensive. The store as a whole is much nicer though.
- bdbr, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7Same situation here, except he doesn't act hurt. Its all about neo-con outrage. He and my big brother will spend hours talking about that. Its like watching Fox News at prime-time...just one outrage after another. Outrage is the fuel on which the neo-con movement runs.
- melissa1031, on 06/23/2009, -1/+8i think we have the same father. so the story goes with my mother. it's honestly impossible to have a semi intelligent conversation. my parents are the most narrow minded and hateful individuals i know. i leave every visit 2 beats shy of a coronary. thank god for alcohol.
- CourageWulf, on 06/23/2009, -2/+9buried for not being able to spell.
- zip000, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6I'm basically in the same boat. Whenever I go home, I keep my mouth shut about most things. I have though had to stop even seeing some of my family. Some of them insist on discussing their views of black people and latinos - with whichever colorful epithets they are using on that particular day - despite the fact that they know that I find it offensive.
There are some things that I will just shut about for the sake of harmony; there are somethings that I just can't let slide. - christianboutin, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6This strikes so close to home it's uncanny.
- Bethi, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6are you saying that someone can't be close to their family and disagree with them on some points, even major ones? I disagree (usually verbally) with my family on most political and spiritual subjects and we're still very close.
Seems sad that some people have families who consider them disrespectful if they don't swallow everything they say and nod like a robot. - jordanlgta, on 06/23/2009, -2/+8Costco wins.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+7Why can't my family be more like the internet? Maybe this is why I spend so much time here...
- playscape, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Ah, you were comparing it to Walmart. Move along...
- TrevorBradley, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5You can, by proxy, choose your in-laws.
- jdames1980, on 06/23/2009, -2/+7This is so true it hurts.
- dazparkour, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Unless you are a parent having genetically screened children.
- hatdrop, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4how orwellian =/
- dafragsta, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5Yep. I have an uncle who I love dearly and he's almost been like a father to me, but he's definitely got that Archie Bunker kind of mentality where says things, but doesn't really hate anyone and actually gets along fine with other kind of lifestyles and ethnicities. I was really proud how well he handled his daughter playing for both teams, but I still can't explain to him why I think Toby Keith is a doucehbag.
- gnimsh, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4Buried for thinking it's not funny.
- slapded, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4I dont know if my dad would ever say LOLZ or '"ITS GUNNA RAIN!"
