- JlmAWP, on 07/13/2008, -43/+801I'll re-state what many other clear-minded people here have stated before: You don't HAVE to buy the phone. Don't like the prices? Go find another phone/carrier.
I can't afford a Mercedes, but you don't see me bitching to them about it in some ***** blog. Get over it. - cheesejaguar, on 07/13/2008, -27/+522Its a toy for rich people, if you can't afford $79.99 a month and $199 up front, you probably aren't Apple's target audience.
- Kanidia, on 07/14/2008, -17/+257If you're broke from buying an iPhone then you really need a lesson in basic money management.
When you can't afford something, don't buy it yet. - iCoty, on 07/14/2008, -26/+150If you can't afford it don't buy it. Easy.
When the original iPod came out it was very expensive and now you can get many variations of the iPod at different price points. I am pretty sure that in the future we will see variations of the iPhone targeted at different groups with different price points.
Until then, if you can't afford it then don't buy it. Easy. - Epistaxis, on 07/14/2008, -8/+132Word. What's wrong with people who feel like they're entitled to own product X, and the company that produces it is cruel for charging money instead of giving it away? You can complain all you want, but if you buy the thing, you effectively vote for them to keep the price where it is. Are these all just Apple users, who aren't familiar with the concept of a competitive market?
- svensko, on 07/14/2008, -64/+176Let me correct it for you:
If you're too smart to pay $79.99 a month and $199 up front, you probably aren't Apple's target audience. - SIRBERUS, on 07/14/2008, -6/+112I wish I could find a site that compared other peoples' phone plans because I'm currently paying almost as much on Verizon with no data plan.
I keep hearing that the iphone plan is expensive... but I guess I've already been ripped off. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -15/+102As far as i see it I paid 180$ for a piece of ***** Verizon phone that has Verizon web, that sucks, that I pay 15$ a month for in addition to my calling plan, to use that piece of ***** Verizon web.
And now I can buy an iPhone, which is a mobile computer, for 199$, and have access to free internet radio, the real unrestricted internet (unlike Verizon) , and all that other crazy *****, for about 17 more dollars than I pay a month now.
No brainer, I am buying the iPhone in a few weeks. - btschul, on 07/13/2008, -27/+102Just get the iPod Touch. All the same features as iPhone (except calls, unless you mod for VoIP and non-wifi internet) but no monthly contract.
- apophenic, on 07/14/2008, -16/+82I love how everyone bitched about how the iPhone was a waste of money and it was going to be replaced by a cheaper, better one in a year, and now that that one's out everyone is STILL bitching.
Buried. I hate all of you. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -8/+66Most of you probably spend $100 to $200 on drugs, booze and porn a month.
- lilvtboix, on 07/14/2008, -33/+90it's simple: don't get it if you can't afford it and don't bitch just because others can.
- Androfire, on 07/14/2008, -7/+64Will show off my iPhone for food..
- punkcat, on 07/14/2008, -3/+52what you use your iphone as a ghetto blaster?
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -9/+57Oh and all other phones have free service I guess!
- mikemarino, on 07/14/2008, -32/+80the iPhone is the cancer that is killing digg.
- Koskun, on 07/14/2008, -11/+57That's because Aikidi, people that are making 6 figures a year, have their cell phones as a business expense, and don't pay for it in the first place.
- Dabaum, on 07/14/2008, -1/+44Right, but the iPhone isn't an essential good
- obzinator, on 07/14/2008, -0/+40People pay for porn?
- svensko, on 07/14/2008, -11/+51How do you think people making six figures got to that point? By spending everything they have any chance they can get? BTW, did you see the lines for the iPhones? I bet those people are barely pushing $20K, much less $100K.
- solistus, on 07/14/2008, -6/+42The second part of your post is true (and ridiculously obvious; no *****, the target market for any given product consists only of people who can afford to buy that product...), but a $200 phone is hardly a "toy for rich people." $200 for a device that many people use every day for years is not out of reach of most non-"rich" Americans. Also, you upped the actual low-end plan price by $10; it's $69.99 a month. Plenty of people who are far from rich pay that much for cell service already. Unlimited data for $30 isn't a pricey service for the rich elite; it's an industry standard price for unlimited 3G data.
- seantubridy, on 07/14/2008, -2/+36http://consumerist.com/consumer/clips/snl-skit-don ...
- timewarp424, on 07/14/2008, -6/+39...I think the creator of the video tried to poke fun at the expense of owning an iphone. I don't think he was seriously whining (or had seriously stuck a gun in his mouth when the original iphone's price dropped two hundred dollars).
- DeathJux, on 07/14/2008, -1/+33Minor but significant detail: No external speaker on the Touch, which I have found to be very nice.
- mecharabbit, on 07/14/2008, -1/+30I'm not so sure. I saw a lot of homeless drunks sleeping outside the Apple store the night before its launch. I think they were waiting to buy an iPhone, but maybe that was just their usual spot...
- Galaxylander, on 07/14/2008, -6/+33People, no duh it seems more expensive. But don't bitch- any god damned plan on a Blackberry or any high end phone is going to be that expensive if not more expensive, and the iPhone is one of the best mobile browsers in the world.
Wah wah wah wah wah. It's a bunch of bitching because the iPhone is getting all the media attention. NOBODY is bitching about the price of the Samsung Instinct when it has expensive plans too! And hell that phone is nowhere near the phone the iPhone is. - Aikidi, on 07/14/2008, -48/+74Right, because people making six figures a year who spend their money how they want to because they dont really need to budget their freakin cell phone bill are stupid for buying a product they want and probably enjoy.
You Putz. - soupdawg30, on 07/14/2008, -3/+29Yea me and my wife pay around $150 for Verizon and we don't have anything special. We will actually be paying the same with AT&T and teh iPhone sure as hell beats the KRZR,
- Spire3660, on 07/14/2008, -4/+28No real GPS on the touch yet, deal breaker for me
- Aikidi, on 07/14/2008, -5/+29heres a tip for life: you can cover the iphone data plan by mowing lawns on the weekends.
70 bucks a month isnt a whole lot of money. most CPAs coming straight out of college bill their clients 75 dollars an hour for their services. since when is 70 or even 100 dollars alot of money.
- a guy who only makes nine bucks an hour - ThaDRD, on 07/14/2008, -2/+25Use every day for years? Or do you mean until Apple comes out with a new phone next year?
- svensko, on 07/14/2008, -12/+30Real businesses owners aren't willing to wait in line for a phone. They're too busy trying to make their business more profitable.
Time spent in line is money they could have been making. - smashingmonkey, on 07/14/2008, -5/+22I guess Verizon is for rich people too, because I've been paying $105 per month for a 2-line family plan with 1,500 minutes and craptastic mobile web. Soon I'll have an iPhone 3G and I'll pay $120 per month for a 2-line family plan with 1,400 minutes and the data plan on the iPhone (not on the wife's free camera phone). 100 fewer minutes, but they'll be rollover minutes, which Verizon's aren't. So for $199 upfront, I'll have an iPhone 3G and be paying $15 more monthly than I was previously.
And for me, it won't just be a toy. I'm on the road most of the day as I lead my double life as both independent Mac technician and active jazz musician. This thing will help me do all of my scheduling on the go, as well as manage contacts and emails. And the maps will be infinitely useful as I travel to gigs and jobs. I'm going to use the heck out of it. - NesloTterrag, on 07/14/2008, -2/+19Bah this is nothing...I payed $250 for my Blackberry and I pay $102 a month in charges. I know it's insane, but I love my toys. I live in the middle of BFE so it's what I expect to pay. Don't like the price? Don't buy it. Can't afford it? Don't get it. Simple.
- mightymouse, on 07/14/2008, -2/+19I totally agree. If you aren't smart enough to manage yourself financially, you suffer the consequences.
You can't buy everything on a minimum wage. - BryanJK, on 07/14/2008, -2/+18I wuvve you.
- skizzbot, on 07/14/2008, -5/+21Pretty sure the cost of the phone and service has been discussed quite enough already... we get it. The price is lower but the service is slightly higher now. Oh well. If you're not willing to pay the new fees, buy a different phone and stop bitching, it's that simple.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+16Minus the fact that it has bluetooth and GPS capabilities, as well as a microphone, speaker, and analog volume control.
I own an iPod touch, and it really ticks me off that Apple decided to make a consumer pay for another device for these capabilities. I have no use for a phone, but I am really considering purchasing an iPhone just for those listed features. - burnerz, on 07/13/2008, -62/+77It is true, by the time you add it all up it is ridiculous money. To be honest it is worth buying a pay as you go iphone or unlocking one and buying a decent contract for it if you want one badly. To be honest I would prefer an HTC Diamond.
- largobargo, on 07/14/2008, -1/+15I bought a refurb iphone 8gb for $250 and unlocked it to use on tmobile with the $6/month unlimited web plan. My phone totally owns your phone. :)
- Spire3660, on 07/14/2008, -0/+14To clarify The Ipod Touch does not have REAL GPS, meaning it cant receive signals from the GPS satelites in orbit. And yes, GPS location via satellite (real GPS) is completely and will always be free, jsut make sure and thank your U.S. John Q. Taxpayer.
- Ramzy, on 07/14/2008, -1/+14You mean the 'Yes' iPhone Cap?
http://tinyurl.com/6ns6jw
$79 a bloody month, for 700MB of monthly data allowance?
Thanks Optus, great deal. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -2/+15I didn't.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+12somebody needs a hug....
- encrypteduser, on 07/14/2008, -4/+16Really? Best purchase you've ever made? Sad.
- anagoge, on 07/14/2008, -17/+29I think what makes the iPhone/Apple different is that Apple markets everything they make as being for the average person and when people realise they're being screwed by a company that markets itself as being friendly and cool, they get annoyed.
- dougmidkiff, on 07/14/2008, -2/+14The Soup FTW
- solistus, on 07/14/2008, -9/+20$70/month is not much for a phone + data contract these days. It would be pretty stupid to buy an iPhone and then not get a data plan, and I don't know of any national cell provider that will offer unlimited 3G data + a voice plan for substantially less. Also, isn't the pay as you go iPhone like $400 more expensive and still locked in to AT&T unless you jailbreak? That seems really, really pointless. Also, you opened two sentences in a row with "to be honest..." Take a writing class or something, man.
- Misanthrope, on 07/14/2008, -1/+11Seriously??? $110? I pay $40/month for Verizon's basic plan. I don't know what you're doing wrong, but it's clearly something.
- LasikPlus, on 07/14/2008, -6/+16yes, it's a toy... but 80 bucks a month and a 200 dollar phone... I don't think that qualifies as something that can only be afforded by the rich... those price points are pretty reasonable even for college graduates who have entry level jobs.
