Wil Wheaton's Geek in Review: The Absolute Sandman
suicidegirls.com — After I picked up The Absolute Sandman Volume One last week, my initial excitement was quickly tempered with a sobering reality: what if, in reading it as a 34 year-old man, it didn't live up to the mythical status I bequeathed upon it as a 16 year-old boy?

- Valor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Gaiman is top shelf. No doubt, I've revisited his work time and time again, through comics, novels, or even co-authored work (Good Omens w/ Prachett) and haven't been disapointed yet. Gaiman always wrote to a mature audience.
But in the end Wolverine was still my comic of choice back in the 80's. - AstroKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I wish I had noticed it was hosted on suicidegirls before clicking the link at work :(
- wilwheaton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14We try to keep the newswire (where I write my columns) safe for work, but it is under the suicidegirls domain, which is right there next to the title of the link.
Sorry about that. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Honest Boss! I only visited it for the articles! ;)
Can't blame him for linking there though. That's the original source of the material and it'd be lame to direct traffic to some copycat site. - LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Same here AstroKid. :) Although on base you get "ACCESS DENIED!" and I'm sure some Comm Tech gets a pop up telling the entire AF what I just did!. :O
I look forward to getting to this when I get back into my room after work. I've always enjoyed Wil's writing style, from talking about getting his boys to play D&D in Dragon magazine, to his more (not so family friendly) reviews of old Star Trek: TNG episodes (when can we expect another one). - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Digg definitely needs an option to vote a site as NSFW. The domain name simply isn't enough in some cases, and having "suicidegirls.com" in a tiny gray font doesn't help much either.
- devilish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeeargh! Websensed! Expect a call from the boss soon....

- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't you just read it from http://www.duggmirror.com
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or just resolve the domain name to its IP, most business filtering software just block by the name.

- chunkylimey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The only thing I'm worried about regarding Sandman is the movie.... at the present level of creative idiocy they will just wait for Gaiman either to die or lose his wits and then cast the latest Orlando Bloom type as Sandman (who cares if he's blond, that all black thing was a downer) and then have a Jar Jar Binks style Mervyn Pumpkinhead.
Gaiman is a great writer but somehow I think he just drifts around looking for a place to finally call his creative home.- jpcoombs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think Sandman would translate very well to a serialized television show, ala Battlestar Galactica. You have a solid 4 seasons of material. But you better have talented people to bring it to life.
- datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dude you are 34? Wow I am getting old.
- travishealy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3k, i thought it was considered lame to submit your own material and/or blog to digg. ??
i guess the users decide.- Korvar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Indeed, the users decide.
I've never quite understood why it should be "lame" to promote your own stuff. Surely if your stuff's no good, it won't get Dugg? - bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What's the point of writing a review if no one reads it?
I have no problem with someone tooting his own horn as long as he's not asking for money at the same time. - jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, I posted articles I wrote to Digg before - I see no problem with it IF you are being direct and up-front about it (and if it is not blog spam, which I have seen others do).

- revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What? Wii Wheaton?
- scottykempf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wil Wheaton rocks!!!!
- jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hi Wil! Have you ever had a chance to meet Mr. Gaiman? I was fortunate enough to do so in the early 90s - he signed my three trade paperbacks and we chatted a bit. GREAT guy. It also helped that I was friends at the time with a horror writer who doing a story for a Sandman anthology book (we had a falling out shortly afterwards, though)...
I'm used to seeing you on Fark, good to see you here.- wilwheaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We've never met in person, but we've spoken through e-mail, and he wrote the foreword for my book Just A Geek. Everyone I've ever talked to that's had the pleasure to meet him in person, work with him, or just be in the same room as him tells me what an amazing guy he is.
I've found that to usually be the case with really talented and creative people, especially writers; they have nothing to prove, and they know how hard they've worked for their success, so they're grateful and kind to the audience who appreciate their work.
I'm nowhere near the writer that Neil is, and never will be (I'm cool with that), but on a smaller scale, I know how great it feels to hear from someone that they liked something I wrote. Neil must hear that a hundred times a day, so it must be hard to NOT feel good about himself and want to share that joy with other people. - jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, cool. I agree, I've found the most talented people have always tended to be the most courteous and friendly (save for Harlan Ellison who is.... well, you know).
You still writing ST reviews for TvSquad? I really liked your Last Outpost review... - jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do'h! Just saw you posted another review. Nevermind.
