Bringing in an actor who is passionate about the cause, involving numerous fans, and making it possible for the public to participate easily...it's quite a stunning and beautiful campaign. And let’s not forget Nathan Fillion’s involvement with Martin Firrell’s HERO project. Truly a noble man, that Nathan Filloin is. Wish there were more folk like him out there.

- VerseExplorer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's so great that Nathan takes time to support great programs like Kids Need To Read. Way to go, Nathan.
- burrawang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think you're right - it's also worth remembering though that some celebs don't shout too loudly about their charity work as they don't want people to think they're doing it to raise their profile as celebs. It's great that Nathan is doing this work, and while he's looking to promote the causes, it's not done in a way that's attention seeking.
- nanjaynemal01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is a great cause.
There just isn't enough good material for the young reader out there. Especially young boys.
And there are many schools & Libraries out there who are in serious need of new books.
Cheers to PJ & Nathan for putting together this great cause! - stoweaway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, I think supporting literacy is a fairly mainstream (and mighty noble) cause. But it seems to be supported more often by more scholarly representatives. I think what's unique is that literacy is being promoted from within the sci-fi world. That's the part that seems unusual to me. But, hey, I'm a sci-fi geek and I'm behind this 100%.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is a fantastic cause and really needs to put out into the mainstream. Being the mum of 2 small boys the challenges I face to encourage reading are great, so something like this is a big help to me.
- jponah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this is such a great cause. I ordered one of the packages and it came a few weeks ago. It has stickers and a cool pendant that I'm sure any kid would love. The book is awesome too, I read it with my son. It was a great thing that we could do together. Supporting literacy is one of the best things we can do for our future generations.
- barrysrib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The book is really good. The packages are reasonable, and you can just straight donate, if you choose. You can find out more at www.kidsneedtoread.org
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1fantastic article and fantastic cause.
- brandigoddess, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i think its wonderful that he wants to help kids read! i love to read and im gonna get the book soon!!!
brandi - Tal71, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I think it's rare to find a celebrity that doesn't support a charity simply for what they can get out of it - usually, they do it for the publicity. So yeah, I think it would be nice to hear more frequently about the more famous among us supporting things because they think it matters - and not because of what it will do for their career...

I hadn't thought about this before, I think it's true. What do other people think? - starfire94, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree that it's rare to find a celebrity that doesn't support a charity except to get publicity out of it. But I do know that Nathan Fillion is one of the exceptions to the rule. He is one of the most caring celebrities out there and he puts his whole heart into the causes he supports. And as MissKK said, don't forget the HERO project that he and Martin Firrell are working on, truly a noble cause along with PJ's literacy project. I have to say that Nathan, PJ and Martin are true HERO'S!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Stoweaway, I agree about the uniqueness of literacy being promoted from within the realm of sci-fi. Add to that the complete lack of good sci-fi books for young readers. The Softwire brings new hope for interest in this genre among kids.
The Kids Need to Read packages are most generous too! This speaks to the integrity of Mr. Haarsma and Mr. Fillion. They are obviously trying to be giving to their fans, while also raising the necessary funds for donations. How refreshing! - Tal71, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You only have a couple of minutes to edit a post, there's a two hour time difference between the tripple post and the response - so clearly the poster didn't see what happened till way past the time the post could have been edited.
I've seen all kinds of boards "multi-post" when only clicking the button once - but that's technology for you - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Stoweaway, I agree about the uniqueness of literacy being promoted from within the realm of sci-fi. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I don't know why that posted 3 times.
- Amillion2one, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I've noticed this myself that there's always alot of material out there for the young FEMALE reader such as Babysitter's Club, Winx Club at the Witch series that my sisters all love.
But when it comes to the boys there's next to nothing there
