- Harvey_Mushman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+143When did a '98 Lincoln become "sporty?"
- holzp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+132He left before the dealer said "one more thing...".
- zdiddy85, on 10/11/2007, -2/+101When you make $1 a year you can pretty much get away with anything.
Wait that doesn't make sense. - DisposableRob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+95He owns all the roads between his house and work?
- dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -4/+93can someone explain what a plateless car is, what kinda mercedes that is, and why steve job gets to drive around without a license plate in his car? is that somehow legal? if he gets stopped does he just bribe cops with tickets to disney?
- guitarh3ro, on 10/11/2007, -11/+97I bet Kevin drives the Digg mobile.
- osaka70, on 10/11/2007, -3/+86Perhaps he gave em their computer
- growlzor, on 10/11/2007, -10/+92"Luxury is a way of life with Michael, and he enjoys his 2004 Porsche Boxster"
Porsche Boxster is like the Daiwoo of Porsche's - joshp20, on 10/11/2007, -4/+73I wonder what happens when I drive around without plates... only 1 way to find out :)
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -3/+67Around the same time Dell's Boxter was luxurious.
- juicebag, on 10/11/2007, -2/+64That's just how he rolls.
- tdrizzle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+63How does Steve Jobs get away with driving without plates?
- AnalogueCharm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+58"The Porsche Boxster is no longer sold as a new car."
Yes it is. - HenvY, on 10/11/2007, -3/+53Driving without plates leaves an ugly gap.
- dclowd9901, on 10/11/2007, -12/+53Technically speaking, you could probably be fine just carrying the plate in the car, and showing it to any cop that pulled you over. It's definitely a power play/think different thing.
"YOU CAN'T NUMBER ME! I'M STEVE ***** JOBS!" - rlutterb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40uh, "technically speaking" he shouldn't be fine not displaying plates, "technically speaking" he should get a citation. California law requires front and back plates to be attached to the vehicle.
- FlashX83, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35@dasilva333
The car is a Mercedes SL55 AMG. (It's possibly an SL65 AMG, but judging by the wheels, I'd say 55) - madstringer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35 Real geeks drive a Delorean DMC-12....
- Tetraca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36A reality distortion field.
- Bipedal, on 10/11/2007, -6/+40None of these guys really cross me as geeks... More like business tycoons. All the real geeks that I know drive pieces of ***** because they spend all their money on their PC rigs.
- Shiftgood, on 10/11/2007, -19/+51Guys.. they're geeks.. ofcourse they pick lame cars... otherwise they wouldnt be geeks!!
/think about it - SnapETom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31This past January, I went to MacWorld in San Francisco (saw Woz, had him sign my fiance's MacBook Pro. Yay!). The next day, we drove down to Cupertino to see the famous Apple campus retail store. The store is near Apple's main entrance and main Infinite Loop driveway. The store parking spots are right next to Apple's handicap spots. As I tried to find a space, I notice a Mercedes right behind me, but didn't pay attention to the driver. I found a spot and parked. As I was opening my door, I see the Mercedes parked in a handicap spot. Steve Jobs gets out, and walks away. I had no idea about the Mercedes, the handicap parking, nor the lack of plates. When I got to the hotel in the evening, I googled it and found Andy Hertzfeld's stories on folklore.org.
http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Handicapped.txt
I took a couple of pictures of his car:

http://www.shuchow.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=2184
I wish I took a clearer picture of the interior, but I was too shocked at the notion of seeing both founders of Apple in less than 24 hours. Besides, I probably would have gotten zapped by some proximity alarm something. That's a bottle of SmartWater in the cup holder. - rlutterb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32damn timer... but realistically speaking, it's true that Jobs is allowed to drive w/o plates because his had been stolen so many times. No *****. Google it.
- solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -2/+331.21 GIGAWATTS?!
- dongiaconia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32@CtrlFreak:
There is a distinction between personal and personalized. In this case, you are describing the latter, where TFA incorrectly used the former. While Mr Dell may have given rise to the Personalized Personal Computer, it is generally accepted that Woz invented the Personal Computer. - MasterJediDan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30@ dasilva333
A plateless car is one without a license plate...
The Mercedes pictured is probably a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG.
Maybe he just keeps the license plate inside the back window...who knows. You only get caught if someone sees you. - TheTardis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28No doubt that prankster Woz has made a gizmo that swipes them
- jayadelson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26Kevin drives a Golf btw.
- HalFTW, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27@rlutterb (#7035592)
I looked and found this:
"...that the state of California allows him to drive without a license plate because he's had so many stolen (he instead has a small bar code where the plate should be)." http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/15/steve-jobs-hearts-autoblog/
If you look closely at the photo you can see a really small sticker where the numberplate should be which must be the bar code. - scbiker, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28I hear his plates were stolen too many times, so a bar code is there instead for police to identify, if they dare give him a ticket.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23I took off my front plate on my Prius (I always have to plug that in, sorry) about a month and a half ago, haven't been pulled over yet. Whatever the fee is for not having a front plate in CA, i'm sure it's a ***** load cheaper than being caught running a red light.
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23haha, i believe in the recent 'i drive a girls car' thread someone referred to it as the Porsche with panties. Which is very suiting.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I drive a civic, not cause I'm a geek but because i'm asian
- marko718, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20I think it would be difficult for Bill Gates to spend ALL his money on a computer. He has to spend a few bills on something else.
- SublimeRuin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Because he wants to.....he's Steve Jobs....
I'm sure Gates could do it too - sirgolf82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14When did Chris Pirillo become famous?
- IShouldBeWorkin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17buried for being inaccurate, poorly written and just outright lame.
- Fedge, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16You only buy a boxter because you can't afford a carrera.
Oh, wait.. - HOOKSTER1231, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18I used to wonder how people got so mis informed, this is clearly one way. How many people will read that Dell invented the PC and say "O, i didn't know that." and spread information such as that ... very sad.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13"Do you normally drive in reverse?"
yeah I just hit 2 cars this morning at a red light. - Hedegaard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Jobs is one of the only people in the US allowed to drive without plates because they were stolen so often (damn fanboys ;)).
- leth4l, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13link is dead. any mirrors?
- MasterJediDan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Duh, these are just common car pictures from around the web - they're not actually the real cars, except maybe for Steve Jobs' Mercedes.
- Rethcir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11What about Carmack and Romero's ferraris?
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11That's not very cool. As much as I admire Apple, Woz, and Jobs, I can't respect it when anybody who isn't disabled takes the handicapped spot.
Cool story though. - scottique, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16"Ballmer is also a Microsoft billionaire who surprisingly drives a sporty maroon 1998 Lincoln Continental..."
...and then they show a photograph of a tan car. Does anybody else get the feeling that these probably *aren't* actual pictures of these guys' cars, especially considering the "car advertisement" photography style on some of them? - Jowe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Bill Nye drives a prius.
- crackedplastic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14@ctrlfreak13:
Check your facts (and dates). The IBM PC, Apple I and II, Commodore 64 (among others) predated the first Dell PC. - Kickersny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I thought it would be glossy white, personally. And have one pedal.
