- tbhurst, on 11/24/2008, -0/+39There you go, GM. That should free up enough cash to avoid a bailout, right?
- AmyVernon, on 11/24/2008, -2/+29Oh noes! What will Tiger do?
- inactive, on 11/24/2008, -5/+24He probably didn't drive that ***** Buick anyway...
- lightsareout, on 11/24/2008, -1/+16About time, no one is worth what they were paying him. All Tiger fans, don't worry he still has nike, gatorade, etc....
- kd420, on 11/25/2008, -1/+13It's sort of, hard to read when you, don't use punctuation, correctly?
- SnuKs, on 11/25/2008, -1/+12The execs are now lighting cigars with dollar bills rather than the typical hundred.
- allaboutdatiki, on 11/24/2008, -1/+11It's not just the endorsement that's over ... it might be time to say goodbye to Buick, altogether ...
- bluesman3535, on 11/25/2008, -0/+8The emotional burden of seeing Tiger Woods make less money is ruining the day. First the whole economy crashes, now this.
- eboarder2020, on 11/25/2008, -2/+10I think conan o'brien said the joke best:
"GM has announced that they are ending their endorsement deal with Tiger Woods. When asked why, a GM spokesman said, “Tiger Woods is successful, competitive, popular . . . and that’s just not us.”" - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7Yeah, and they're switching from 2-ply to single-ply toilet paper at the office. That'll save a few cents as well /sarc.
- Dagreenman, on 11/25/2008, -1/+7hell, HE probably droped them because they were asking him for a bailout.
- CommanderEFG, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6I'm sure he is still well on his way to becoming the world's first billionaire athlete by 2010 or 2011 like most people predict.
- inigomntoya, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3They just need to bite the bullet and declare bankruptcy.
That way, they can re-negotiate their crappy union contracts (or get rid of them) and start paying people what they are actually worth. - inactive, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3Woody should do more commercials
- cawpin, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3@PJ - You obviously haven't driven a recent Buick. They are great cars.
- wiggles, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3you laugh, they actually did that at my office.
- LanceUppercut, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3He probably doesn't drive, period. I think he either takes the TWA (Tiger Woods Airline) private jet or the huge ass boat.
And he walks, on water or otherwise. - wiggles, on 11/25/2008, -1/+4You're right. They need to go out of business and have their assets reformed into a new company, free of union problems and the like. Why is it that a GM worker in the US makes $75 per hour, on average in salary and benefits, while a Toyota worker in the US makes $45 an hour? There's a huge structural imbalance here...
- Cglass, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3The problems with GM are so long-stemming from a slew of issues that I am ashamed they are even trying to ride the bailout bandwagon. GM has been a ship headed for the bottom of the ocean for decades now.
- rolf, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Making a decent car people want would seem to be key too. Really good brands have to advertise a lot less.
- romeyinfc, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Why don't they just use their stock for toilet paper - two birds with one stone
- cowsgonemadd3, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Frosted Flakes...They are GRRReeeaaTTT!
- dancindrudge, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2tiger should be happy.. he really didnt like doing the buick invitationals anyways... he has wanted out of that contract for awhile. maybe he called and offered to cancel the contract...
- inigomntoya, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Hello Toyota! Shouldn't be too hard - the Japanese are HUGE golf fans.
- inigomntoya, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Just because someone doesn't fit the current demographic doesn't mean they won't make a good spokesperson.
Maybe Buick was trying to appeal to a younger, more athletic demographic. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -1/+3AWWWW poor tiger. He will only rake in 85 million next year! What will he do???
There should be a story about the people who really are affected by GM's cash woes. - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2So much for the Buick Open as well
- Napiertt, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2What's going on at GM is not an ethics issue.
- cle2105, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2My bubble has been burst. You've won this battle, but the war is not over....
- oldhick, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Advertising is key right now. The question is can they find a more cost effective method of advertising. I would imagine so.
- Solstice, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Tesla is over.
They've only delivered 30 cars (as of September 30th - I don't have any more recent info) and they will likely run out of cash before even filling the rest of their orders.
Running a car company takes billions of dollars in capital. Tesla only raised $186 million in VC funding. They were underfunded to begin with, unfortunately - and they had the stupidity to startup other projects ("WhiteStar") before shipping their roadster.
To stay afloat, they recently had to take out a $40 million loan in lieu of the $100 million round of funding that they wanted to do. No VCs would bite - as they probably see the writing on the wall as well. There's no way that they can do an IPO in the current economy. - BoneStamp, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Tesla's future relies on their ability to realize the concept of mass production.
- inigomntoya, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Something that GM did well. For a while...
- rolf, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2The endorsement was believed to be around $7 million a year. A penny saved is a penny earned and all that.
http://money.cnn.com/2008/11/24/news/companies/GM_ ... - NonLeftistDiggr, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Was it ever real, meaning did it ever matter? Tiger woods, possibly the first athlete to pull in 1 billion dollars.... wants to drive a Buick that literally looks like a sail boat? Does marketing like that work? I would have to search my city for a week straight to find a Buick, although I could cut that down by starting at the local retirement homes.
We had a buick in the 80's, easily the worst built car the family has ever owned from exterior to interior. That car alone pushed, nearly forced, my dad to buy Japanese vehicles ever since. Maybe they're better now, but getting burned that bad on quality with something as expensive as a car makes for lasting impressions. - Desmothenes, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3There is. I'm watching it on CNN right now.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Yep.
What it is, however, is a high profile cut. One that is sure to get people talking and the government listening. - ingoldsby, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2I actually hope they pull through, the Volt is looking very nice.
- urgeigh, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3Actually Ford is in better shape than both of them.
- audiogeek5, on 11/25/2008, -2/+4He'll go and endorse a car manufacturer that doesn't suck, instead of getting paid by GM to try and get golf fans to go out and buy a crappy Buick.
- chriskzoo, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1LOL - Tiger agreed to get out of this contract because he will get MORE per year to put a logo on his bag. I think he's too conscious of the American public to go to someone like Toyota, but someone will pay him well over the $9M GM was giving him.
- rashawty, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1I find it amusing that after killing the electric car so many years ago that GM is now relying on a electric car to save their asses. I think the volt is a cool car and it's nice that they are trying to catch up but i don't see how charging 30 - 40 thousand for a first gen Chevy electric vehicle during a recession is going to save a company in so much trouble.
- edahms, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1all these ***** companies should be getting rid of their largest marketing budgets. citigroup should be forced to take its name off the stadium, GM should've cut tiger MONTHS ago. when there's millions of marketing dollars that can be used to support the internal systems of a business, they need to be used. and i say this as a guy working in the advertising industry. its just ***** foolish to argue that these endorsements and ***** are "critical" to the company bringing in revenue. its about as critical as flying a private jet to beg for 25 billion dollars is critical to a CEOs protection.
- ingoldsby, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1I don't expect it to save them, but it is a step in the right direction. Even at $30,000 they are actually going to be losing money on the car due to battery costs. If they really do debut at $30,000 I will be hard pressed not to pick one up.
- NeoNcP, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1Tiger > GM
- zunigbab, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1Soon to be followed by the headline - "GM is Over!"
- roguehelicopter, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1'Now I dont have to ride in a buick rendezvous anymore!' - Tiger Woods
- BoneStamp, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1They need a loan, not a bailout... which is what the government won't give them.
- Napiertt, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1Here's a tissue ;-)
- jedinate, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1All of these types of deals are gonna start going away. Citigroup is trying to back out of the naming rights for the new Mets stadium too.
Maybe we can go back to naming stadiums after great players/coaches and golf tournaments after great players or links... -
