- tslack, on 11/07/2007, -26/+996I'm shocked. He's tempted death many, many times on TV. I thought he was immune.
- inactive, on 10/26/2007, -64/+615go ***** yourself and die.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -9/+379He's died doing what he loved.
This was only a few kilometres away from where I live, and even though we know the reef can be very dangerous, I think this has taken us all by surprise.
RIP - You'll be missed mate! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+276Feed that ray to the crocodiles!
- spamzor, on 10/12/2007, -8/+217Sad news! All australians recognize the man. He used to be a client for our web development company, it's the closest i've come to meeting him. Nice guy apparantly
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+212How can you find the death of a great patron of this world's environment, who has 2 young children and a wife funny? You sicken me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+190Because you're a ***** horrible arsehole?
- bds268, on 10/12/2007, -6/+175still, man, have some ***** respect.... no matter how bored you are.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -7/+163Yeah, as sad as it is, I think being killed by an exotic animal is actually very fitting for him. He was swimming around deadly fking stingrays, like any other day. At least it wasn't like he got hit by a car or died from cancer
- Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -9/+154@spamzor
Not just Australia, I'm from the same town his wife is from and everbody here watches the show, this is shocking, and really sad too. - bob_the_alien, on 10/12/2007, -12/+142@yevkasem
How could you speak something like that, even if you don't like the guy, that's absolutely horrible to be happy about someones death, not really sure I'd express my opinion the way ButtholeSurfer did, but I understand his feelings. You need to seriously reevaluate yourself. - kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+128A sad day... RIP mate. You entertained and educated the masses. You will be missed.
- zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+103Appears true as its now breaking news on the front of CNN. I didn't even know sting rays had that sort of thing on them (which is really just stupid on my part). I googled around and found out more about the 'barb' that stingrays have and found this page...
(go down to 'What is the sting?')

Must hurt to get hit with one of those things and they say their venomous. All the times this guy wrangled with dangerous animals I'm surprised he was injured a lot more often. Although I never imagined he was actually in enough danger to be killed because I was under some false hope that maybe they had medical teams standing by or took certain precautions to make sure he couldn't actually be killed by the animals he was dealing with. From the same article in the link though it says "the sting is purely a defensive weapon only and that the "striking" action is an involuntary response rather than a conscious attack." So my only guess is that he was messing with or near the one that struck him. Tragic loss... he was pretty cool not only in the animals he would cover but the way he would present information and so forth about them. - IcyJoey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+94He did a lot of good spreading awareness about the environment, and no-one can say he led an uneventful life..
At least he died doing something he loved. Kudos to you, Steve. - scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -9/+93This is definently a shock. We know from watching him on tv that he always fated death by attempting dangerous actions in order to educate people, but he alwasy seems to escape danger. This is definently a sad day for him and his wife Terry. I wish them the best.
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -7/+88Watch out...someone might get bored some day and kick you in the crotch just to see how you'd respond.
- Stevor1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+72Me and my family a few years ago sent him a letter saying that we enjoyed his show and to congratulate him on his new born. He sent us a reply back with tickets to his zoo and a signed post card saying thanks and that he would love to show us around the park if we ever visited. He was a really nice guy with a loving family and I hate to hear that he's gone.
- BogogF, on 10/12/2007, -24/+94Because you were bored ? You're a disgusting pile of putrescent *****, ***** off and die.
- spamzor, on 10/12/2007, -10/+80speaking to my co-workers and we all agree that it feels like we've lost a mate. he's died in a very australian & crocodile hunter way. RIP!
- ozroy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+75Just in response to a couple of the comments on this thread. I want to correct some misconceptions.
I'm not sure that stingrays can be considered "exotic" and are most definitely not considered "deadly".
From wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sting_ray
"Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away."
I scuba dive a lot and see all sorts of rays and sharks. Hell when I was learning to dive we had a massive 2m black Bull Ray swim right through our group. What happened here is obviously an accident, and not caused by some vicious deadly animal. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -8/+71http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200609/s1732439.htm
- kowcop, on 11/07/2007, -3/+65crikey... RIP Steve.. a sad day, he was a true blue Aussie
- Wingnut233, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62Yeah, when an article says "It is understood" 3 times, it really doesn't sound professional. Unfortunately, the news is still genuine.
Rest in Peace.
I remember an interview he did with Conan O'Brian, where he said his death should be at the hands of a crocodile. Where, with his dying breath, he'd prop the croc's mouth open, yell "Crikey", and then be swallowed.
Too bad... - malonie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59I thought he's immortal, with all those crocs and venomous snakes....then this?
A big lose to kids and kids alike...you'll be missed mate! - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56"his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death."
She'll be devastated - copious, on 10/12/2007, -4/+57its real, its on australian radio atm.
- iWaffles, on 11/07/2007, -3/+54He really enjoyed his work, and that is all that matters.
- tangential, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53His wife Terri.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -10/+59Show some respect man that is just ***** up!
- brendanheyu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48Steve,
Mate - I know you're up there - I can't believe a stingray got ya. You deserve a more dignified tragedy - at the very least a death by something more exotic.
I thank you for the education you have bestowed upon us - the face you gave Australia - and you should know for sure - your kids, and my kids - are better off for the man you were.
Hats off mate,
Brendan - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47It is true, it's being reported all over
- canti32, on 10/12/2007, -11/+50Hey, I got a joke.
What kind of person laughs when someone else dies?
An *****.
Just ***** off. Go back to whatever ***** pile you belong in and leave the rest of the world alone, you stupid, ignorant cockbite. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42This is accurate. It is on Wikipedia and the article is locked for vandalism:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Irwin#Death - elliam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40This is a fine example of irony.
Man spends his life poking at dangerous animals, but gets killed by a relatively harmless one. (Harmless in terms of it's general behaviour, as opposed to potential lethality.)
RIP Steve Irwin.. - szelij, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41Man this is so shocking. Steve Irwin was one of those guys that was larger-than-life and yet he wasn't an *****. I was in my office an hour ago and i looked up the BBC and found that Steve Irwin's dead.
Shocking. Man...i'm going to miss him.
RIP. - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41:) wow you're a ***** face
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43this will break my son's heart.
thoughts & condolences go out to steve's family. - putnam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41did you know that you're not funny or original in any way
- crammaz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42As an Aussie, I just wanna say you will be missed
Were playing Khe San for you all today - (as should all the Aussie's who know what I'm talking about :P)
RIP Mate... - Vokas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36I bet he's tackling God right about now..."Oh isn't he a beauty!!!..."
- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44MSNBC has the story now. He will be missed!

R.I.P Mate! - steveoco, on 10/12/2007, -15/+47I wish nothing but bad luck on you ***** stain.
He was a national treasure and genuine nice guy. He was loved by many and hated by none.
I would trade your death for his any day! - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Man....that's just shocking and really, really sad.
But, if you really look at it, at least he went out doing the exact thing that gave him so much fame and excitement in his life. He probably wouldn't have wanted it any other way
Still, it's just tragic...my thoughts go out to the family and all of the fans of the man. May he rest in peace - pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35The animals of our planet have lost a a strong allied friend
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33R.I.P Steve.
Jeff Corwin will NEVER take your place... - blobzorz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34My stomach hurts... This really hit me. Rest in Peace Steve.
- stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Wow, thats real news. Though he has had quite a few near death experiences with pretty much every animal you can think of.
- JoeKickass, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33It's been said before, but I'll say it too,
You were a real aussie, true and blue,
R.I.P. Steve, all the years without getting bit,
You live it up in heaven man, we won't foreget.
Just kick back and relax, this is your cue,
Because no one else, deserves it more than you. - sfox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Have been watching his tv series as long as I can remember. Sad to see you go Stevo.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33I remember seeing him on telly back in the early 90's when he did mainly snake stuff, it was always interesting. Hope all the best to his wife Tracy and their 2 children...
