The reason pro-athletes and big-time corporate CEO's are payed the big money is, aside from some corruption here and there, that the labor they offer is truly scarce; not many others can do what they do.
The top 5 models there are beautiful, no question, but there are other women at every level of the industry who are just as beautiful with their own unique character. - fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13No they don't. I worked for a modelling agency for 4 years and nearly all of the models on their books still had day jobs. Some of them would make 'great' money like $2000 for a days work but they might only get days like that 3 or 4 times a year.

- madroneDorf, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Top Athletes, Models, etc can distribute their product (skill, image, or whatever) to a vast audience, and due to this, the "best" (or more accurately, most sought after) recieve a high salary, as lesser someone of lesser quality, that lesser value is sought after less by a wide audience, hence are worth a lot more.
A nuclear engineer on the other hand, while require a lot of skill, can only distribute his skills to one place.
If one Nuclear engineer could run all the nuclear power plants (or whatever their job is) by themselves (or at least distribute their effectiveness to a wide audiene) they would be paid a lot more. - RobbyDigital, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9While I agree that supermodels are overpaid, not everyone can be one. Lots of people can go to school and learn the skills to be an engineer, but beauty is something you are born with.

I suspect they command the salary they do because they're recognized by consumers. NOT because they're really hot. I see hotter woman than "super models" on a daily basis.
- Arkonnan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7While you're correct that it's a bit more than just standing there looking good, you cannot compare the skill it takes to be a model with, say, the skill required to be a nuclear engineer(as someone else already pointed out). In the end, Models are like dancers, only without all the back breaking work. They're good at following choreography. That's all.
Now being a good photographer on the other hand. You will not get any good model for less than 1K for a session(sometimes less than a couple of hours), unless you pull them off the street which some people do but then that same model will be smart enough to charge you more(cause they are not stupid) next time you call.

If all it took was getting other attractive girls to wear the clothing, then there would be a lot of competition and they wouldn't earn a whole lot. Women are the ones that buy woman's clothing. If anyone can change this, it's them.

Male models aren't fat and ugly and hand models don't have deformed dirty hands. The last thing a woman wants to see is some whale modeling in a bikini she is thinking about buying.
