http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBA4vWQRBA0 - allocate, on 01/13/2009, -0/+21That's interesting -- I never really thought about how impossible a touch screen would be for a blind person.
- IvenomI, on 01/14/2009, -3/+20He doesn't
- mrgarci1, on 01/13/2009, -0/+17FTA - He edits all his music using sophisticated programs such as Steinberg Cubase and Apple Logic Pro
Further proof that Stevie Wonder can use the Force. - suzaku, on 01/14/2009, -0/+13Stevie Wonder is a musical genius!

- borez, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4FTR:
Kanye West = autotune ( not vocoder)
First recorded vocoder use "Sparky's Magic piano" (1941) 9 years before Stevie was even born. - System6, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4That "portable harpischord" was actually inspired by Stevie Wonder and invented by Ray Kurzweil. (The singularity guy) Hence Kurzweil keyboards and synths.
Very cool stuff if you can find the story about their encounter and the invention that Ray came up with actually really quickly. It revolutionized modern music period. - BossKey, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4There will never be a more badass Sesame Street segment than the one he did.

- rac1234, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3The guy is one of the true musical geniuses (genii?) of our times.
Dugg for Stevie Wonder. Wouldn't feel good to be his drummer though. - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3What the ***** are you smoking?

2:55 Stevie Wonder playing Uptight (Everything's Alright) and Satisfaction with the Stones in 1972 on their US tour for Exile on Main Street (Their first US tour since the Altamont incident)...this is from the banned Stones documentary ***** Blues.
Stevie most definitely played rock music and was well respected among blues and rock musicians in the 60's and 70's. - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4J-J-Jammin on the one.
- MiGs2, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3He also has the most awesome and futuristic shades ever, especially in the 90s
- NYConcepts, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3This guy was the first person I've ever heard use the Vcoder, so ***** Kanye West!
- knutslie, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2hey, Stevie, the name of the soda is ayahuasca, and as for the pill, i dunno, MDMA maybe?
thanks for making my ears a better instrument... - leif77, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBA4vWQRBA0

dropping a ***** beat on drums... - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2When he was a kid he was already writing hits. He was signed to Motown when he was 11 or 12. Fingertips and Uptight (Everything's Alright) came out a few years later.
- borez, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2I'm afraid Coultrain is right, it was a talkbox. But we're splitting hairs here to be honest. It's not worth the argument.
http://www.gfworks.jp/talkbox/ - Coultrain, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2that's a talkbox.
a talkbox runs the lead synth through an amp into a speaker which is connected to a tube that goes into the performers mouth.
a vocoder is a mic connected to a synth. the vocals or instrument are treated in the synth and the sound is completely different.
edit: no doubt borez. No argument just wanted to make sure to differentiate it as I am huge Zapp and Stevie fan. Hope I didn't come off as pompous didn't mean to. Great link btw. - borez, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3I hear you
- dixhuit, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Actually, Autotune is available in all sorts of different flavours and is not exclusive to Protools (and yes, it's not a Vocoder).
Haha, this is getting so geeked out.
NYConcepts, you really f*cked up (but yes, f*ck Kanye West). - enkideridu, on 05/15/2009, -0/+1*chant* One Of Us! One Of Us! One Of Us!..
- Abomonog, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Yes, because everyone knows that FL Studio is a far better music editing program. :)
P.S. That was a joke. The three programs are so close in quality that there is really no sense in comparing them. - frontaxle, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3There are superstitious...
writings on the screen... - Coultrain, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2FTR as well
Stevie Wonder used a talkbox not a vocoder.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvWtjqNxYnE
He's the one who inspired Roger Troutman to use the talkbox. - IvenomI, on 01/14/2009, -3/+4I bet when he was a kid no one thought they'd ever see him as successful as he is. Especially him.
- Fw7X0, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3Congratulations!
Would you like a cookie? - ferrell, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3I see what you did there.
- WhoDoneIt, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2He should have hung out at Carrot stores even more.
- super_spyder, on 01/14/2009, -3/+4My girlfriend said that she saw him at CES;
I said "he didn't see you". - deema1, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1I laughed so hard when I read your response. How can you not tell I was kidding? I love watching people get all bent out of shape over things that are clearly sarcastic.
The random, "Jam it on the one," Cosby Show reference wasn't good enough? The racist comment in the complete absence of any talk of race wasn't enough? The comment that being called a geek is a derogatory term? - Abomonog, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Notice his kit is a double bass setup. That's something you don't see in music again until Metallica shows up on the scene.
- claybass, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Not the same at all actually. Autotune is a protools plug in that digitally automates pitch. The reason Kanye and Britney Spears etc sound like a synth is that Autotune gets rid of waivers which are completely normal in the human voice.
Vocoder is an envelope filter which puts the voice through a bank of synth sounds. Check out Kraftwerk's Autobahn, the robot voice in Styx's Mr Roboto, or Imogen Heap's hide and seek to hear vocoder in action, then compare that to Kanye's 808's and heartbreak album, or Britney Spears' womanizer. - Abomonog, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1No it didn't. Only two rock bands (other than Wonder) ever took harpsichords on tour with them and they both used vintage 18th century models. Those bands were Yes and Jethro Tull. It may have been useful because Kurzweil invented a harpsichord that didn't cost 50 large to get, but the portable version lacks the tonal quality of a full sized one and since a full sized harpsichord is about half the size of a mini grand piano it was really nothing to move after loading up the Steinway.
It was the combination of Wonders drum machine and the newly invented electronic drum kit (invented by Keith Emerson and Karl Palmer) that really changed music.
Between Stevie Wonder and ELP you get the first tastes of the inventions that would make up the rhythm sections for both metal and rap. Double bass kits, drum synths, drum machines, and keys layered with post effects (Wonders wha wha electric piano and Emersons tube screamer driven Hammond B3). These were the trade marks of the two hottest keyboardists of the late 60's and early 70's.
But the article is indeed right. Wonder most likely qualifies as the first circuit bender in music.
The very first drum synthesizer in action on stage.

- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Are you serious? One word for you: TONTO. Stevie was cracking the tech since the EARLY 1970s.
