- azikrogar, on 04/13/2009, -0/+17It's not about technology taking over, it's about parents being lazy. As a parent, you have to stress balance in you child's life. Make sure they're getting outside and participating in activities with their friends. Hanging out on the internet and texting is ok, but they just have to learn moderation. Moderation doesn't come with taking their cell phone away every time they get in trouble. It comes with informing the children about their decisions and how they impact others.
- CptnEvilStomper, on 04/13/2009, -2/+16Yeah, yeah, computers and cell phones ruined societal interaction, the telephone ruined letter-writing, and electricity ruined the quaint experience of reading by candlelight. Every generation does this - things change, they refuse to adapt, and suddenly the world is a different place and everything is ***** because it's not the way it used to be.
Granted, there are a lot of obnoxious kids out there, but I think that's because a lot of parents treat technology as a substitute for being involved in their kids' lives. It has nothing to do with the technology itself being inherently evil or wrong. - Dinsdale77, on 04/13/2009, -0/+14I saw a kid bowling and texting at the same time, that would make anyone want to send out bombs in the mail.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7I'm inclined to agree. Too much of anything is usually dangerous. Overexposure in social relationships is not healthy. Children which ought to be focusing their energies on development and enhancing cognition risk this fragile process by always being distracted by this extraneous stimuli called 'texting'. The thing with distracting stimuli as texting is it's not habituating like other phenomena because it requires input (viewing and responding to text). This is counter-productive in a class evironment. Even for adults, this notion that we must always "be available" is taking away the value and intimacy of face to face (or at least the very least voice) interaction. As with the nature of technology of creating problems only to solve later I think we are on the cusp of a solution - holographic imaging and communication. That we can talk to each other as if face to face.
- palehorse864, on 04/13/2009, -1/+7Despite the opinions, she and Fleetwood Mac have made a lot of good music over the years, and some really classic stuff.
- friggle, on 04/13/2009, -5/+10Shut up and sing
- palehorse864, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5Stevie is short for Stephanie.
You may also want to yell at that terrible woman Lindsey Buckingham. - azikrogar, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4*girl
You didn't read the article did you? You would've seen a big picture of her in the middle of it. Regardless of headline, it's important to read the information before coming to a judgment. You have to know what you hate. - inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4True, texting is just another way for them to be rude.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4Not only is she female (as others have noted for your benefit) but she's also one of the most famous singers in the world.
Massive fail. - freedomischaos, on 04/13/2009, -1/+5I love the iPod zombies.
- tostrstrudel, on 04/13/2009, -3/+7FTA: "Buy music, do not steal music. If you do, you won't have any new music later on"
Does she really believe this? I'm fairly certain that music existed before big record labels and, you know, money. - jadedsunrise, on 04/13/2009, -0/+3The utter fail your comment has is astounding.
Also, you didn't read the article, did you?
It's a girl, dumbass - inactive, on 04/13/2009, -2/+5Sorry, but when I'm at a concert and I see idiots texting through every song instead of enjoying the music and the moment, I think there a modicum of truth to this. I'm not saying it's the end of civilization as we know it, but parents who let there young 'uns play DS at birthday parties and text during dinner, etc. are failing their kids. Probably not any less than 20 years ago in some other way, but there are definitely many more instantaneous ways to tune out.
- chadsmith729, on 04/13/2009, -0/+3Well said. You bring up some good points here. Glad that nobody has said something stupid like "Video killed the radio star" or something like that.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/13/2009, -1/+4Lets wait till they grow up to see how much we really screwed them....
....wait
Crap....I am one of them!
/Grr - luteslinger, on 04/13/2009, -1/+4Kids are ill mannered these days for sure, but I don't think texting has anything to do with it.
- novenator, on 04/13/2009, -2/+5She must have just read the Unabombers Manifesto http://cyber.eserver.org/unabom.txt
- palehorse864, on 04/13/2009, -1/+4Great vid of Stevie and Fleetwood Mac performing Rhiannon in the 70's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROsqq7Nn3eU - LonelyTylenoL, on 04/13/2009, -1/+4I just made some music by tapping on my desk. All the sudden, this little business guy popped up and told me I can't do that because his client is already doing that for a living.
- Hu99, on 04/13/2009, -2/+4So do I.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2Stevie's not an idiot. She's actually a pretty smart woman (I've met her a couple of times). Stevie's also recently said Brittany Spears isn't a rock star and has no idea what it takes to be one and after she heard rumors that Lindsey Lohan wanted to play her in a biopic said "over my dead body". Yeah, she did a lot of coke and ***** back in the day but most musician's did it back in the 70' and 80's.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3I saw a kid sitting down and playing a computer game at the same time, now I know why they nuked Japan.
- crashcarstar, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3Cocaine is ruining our children.
- kurisu10, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I wonder if these mass-texting, over-socializing teens and young adults will eventually get sick of it all like I did. When communication starts coming in from bill collectors, bosses telling you to come in early, and nosy relatives, you gradually drift further away from the cellphone.
This to me, isn't technology's fault. It's more the parent's fault, for not teaching their kids priorities and remaining active in their academic life. There are too many stupid kids graduating lately. It's like they have no aspirations or goals past, "dental assistant" or "barista", partying and getting laid. They text because they have nothing better to do. Nor do they think anything is wrong with their complacency.
Listening to these kids speak... it's like my IQ is being forcibly drained through my nose. - inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2Much the same way kids would develop their skills at sticks and tires? Or kick the can?
What about kids development with drugs and sex during 'that' generation?
Or maybe their development at work ethic during 'the other' generation before labor laws?
The technology is just another trough full of delicious crap for people to stuff in their faces. Don't blame the technology, people have always been like this - only now it's a different shade of green. - inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2Her intentions are well placed but her perception is off. I have absolutely no idea what to expect by the time my 13 month old daughter turns 16 but my agenda is to raise her as an open-minded, caring, involved, and informed human being so she can excel in her interests and be aware of her vices. This is no different than every other decent and genuine parent in history. Whatever the latest trends are of her generation turn out to be, it will be my responsibility to teach her how technology is a tool to be utilized and not to be pretentious about it's place in her life.
- i23Photography, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2Just like the white winged dove...
- i23Photography, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I was making a pun based on one of her songs.
- johndavidjack, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I don't think anyone really gets what this actually means...
- johndavidjack, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1I know, but it was actually based on a rumor that Stevie Nick's nose was so messed up from cocaine that she had to use it in another way...
- fragmit, on 04/13/2009, -1/+2idk my bff jill
- osko2052, on 04/13/2009, -3/+4Stevie, 1977 is over.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Exactly! Spot on! It's the parents.
Remember kids, blame your parents for all your problems. :) - jadedsunrise, on 04/13/2009, -3/+4She's still a very respected name in the music industry and someone whom has a right to an opinion.
- shaelen, on 04/13/2009, -2/+3Pfft.. she sounds like every other generations' "old person" complaining about the youth of today.
I'm 43, relatively "old" as well, and even I understand change. - Verugan, on 04/23/2009, -0/+0When I was a kid it was Nintendo and D&D that would ruin me.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -1/+1We're moving faster and faster towards a life of instant response and instant gratification. This isn't entirely bad, but the honest truth is if it weren't for texting during a concert those same jerk offs would be staring blankly into the crowd.
- donnytomas, on 04/13/2009, -2/+2Cocaine has ruined Stevie Nicks
- scootklein, on 04/13/2009, -4/+4she's kinda right
- mtrem225, on 04/13/2009, -2/+2She's a great singer but just because she's Stevie Nicks doesn't mean she's right... I wouldn't blame texting, I would blame the parents. Plenty of young people with parents who know what they're doing are doing just fine.
- WoollyMittens, on 04/13/2009, -1/+1There's an Amish colony that will take her in.
- RegalBegal, on 04/13/2009, -3/+3Long gone are the days of doing coke and ***** everyone in the band. I'm sure she's familiar with the Rolling Stones.
"What a draaag it is getting ooold" - i23Photography, on 04/13/2009, -2/+2@Hu99
But you don't have to be heard.... buried! - cfuse, on 04/13/2009, -1/+1Or, just shut up. That works too.
- scottsutherland, on 04/13/2009, -3/+3And hundreds of years ago, music did the same thing.
- cfuse, on 04/13/2009, -2/+2I'm at the age where teenagers are really beginning to piss me off, but I remember what my friends and I were like, so I think it's stupid to act like this is a revelation. What's the matter Stevie? Don't you remember when your grandparents and parents said exactly the same thing you are now? I'm waiting for the follow up article: Stevie Nicks says: Get off my lawn you damn kids!!!
- 9umber9ine, on 04/13/2009, -1/+1tough job for parents these days huh?
- rexprime, on 04/13/2009, -2/+2"bahhh! bahhhh!"
- crazyraven, on 04/13/2009, -1/+1I think it's safe to say that an over-dependence on technology has caused people to interact a whole lot less on a face-to-face basis.
Each and every day, more people are playing games virtually, having conversations virtually, and working with others virtually, and are moving away from activities that actually put them in the same room/area as other humans.
As a result, by removing a lot of the true 'human-connection', people in general (not just kids) are not only forgetting HOW to interact with others face-to-face, but are becoming less interested and concerned about others' feelings, opinions, and needs.
Who's fault is it?
Does it matter?
It's happening, for whatever reason. -
