- Vesuvias, on 06/16/2008, -4/+212Huge loss to all of Hollywood and the future of movies... CGI is officially all we are going to get from here on out =(
- Cuja, on 06/16/2008, -2/+106I so want this to be a horrible hoax.
- Amadeus2490, on 06/16/2008, -0/+862008: The Year That All The Cool People Died.
- bossm4n, on 06/16/2008, -0/+69An amazing talent. His last film was Iron Man. He certainly went out on a high note. You will be missed.
- jonshipman, on 06/16/2008, -1/+59Hasta La Vista
- flash2000, on 06/16/2008, -0/+36He has left an amazing legacy of talented artists that he had been a mentor, inspiration and friend to. Stan will live on in those people who will continue to bring innovation and imagination to the craft that Stan was truly the grand master of. But I would think the last thing he would want is everyone decrying the craft he loved so much as dead after he was gone. I'm as heart sick over his passing as you guys are... but let's be thankful to Stan for sharing his talents with so many other talented people that will pick up where he left off and carry on in his name.
- Faken, on 06/16/2008, -6/+42God bless you Stan.
- paulzy, on 06/16/2008, -0/+33Hopefully his art form outlives him. Losing that would be even more tragic.
- Dangered, on 06/16/2008, -3/+35CGI can bring him back

- duke1981, on 06/16/2008, -0/+19The greatest special effects artist ever. RIP friend.
- logicalnoise, on 06/16/2008, -1/+18his legacy will live on. He mentored the heads of KNB studios and weta seems to be keeping the practical effects practice going as well
- Surefly, on 06/16/2008, -0/+17This is definitely not cool.
- faithhammer, on 06/16/2008, -0/+16Is it just my imagination or have alot of big names been dying in the last few months. RIP to all.
- gametavern, on 06/16/2008, -0/+16This is horrible news. That man was my idol. Got me into prop/costume making. He will always be remembered though. Practical effects are always better than CGI. May his work continue always.
- wontstoptalking, on 06/16/2008, -0/+13He was more of an animatronics guy.
- floridiot2, on 06/16/2008, -0/+13He'l be back.
- dafragsta, on 06/16/2008, -0/+12Definitely one of the last men that could've saved us from terrible CGI monsters when Hollywood realizes that's why their big effects budget movies suck.
You can see him operating the pole that the terminator is on after he crashes toward the end of T1 and the Terminator is getting back up. - gonzoblair, on 06/16/2008, -0/+11Actually no... Terminator 2 was full of practical FX courtesy of Stan Winston. They were so amazing you probably assumed they were ALL CG. But in fact tons of shots of the Liquid Metal T-1000 were actually done using incredible prosthetics and puppets (remember his face half hanging open or the metal arms?). Shots of Arnold with his face half open, Winston's FX. That's how great he was. When he was doing his best work, you didn't even know it was his.
- gonzoblair, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9He was a truly great artist, a really nice guy in person, and a true inspiration. He will be deeply missed.
- Mr.Gone, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9Damn, Damn damn damn. That guy saved so many movies from CGI hell. I sure hope people remember what kind of a genius he was and keep striving to make practical effects as good as he did. :(
- idavidtang, on 06/16/2008, -0/+9I hope he'll get some kind of special award/honorable mention at the Oscars next year.
- Vesuvias, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8I was thinking and hoping the same thing when I was checking Ain't It Cool this morning... honestly this NEEDS to be a hoax... but I fear it's not, as the guy who runs Ain't It Cool has a very reliable source whom is friends of Stan and his family.
Seriously, Death is having a field day in Hollywood this year... - Lucas123, on 06/16/2008, -1/+9Keep 'em entertained up there, Stan.
- badwithcomputer, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8:(
- zadadka, on 06/16/2008, -1/+9It won't take long before our children say his effects were "old hat"...and, whilst he wasn't directly part of that film (I don't think so anyway), I'm reminded of part of Roy Batty's closing lines in Blade Runner:
"I've seen things you people wouldn't beleive".
Stan bought to life things that many of us couldn't beleive...and made them real enough for many generations to think plausible, entertaining and part of our lives.
"Revel in the things that you have done".
We will Stan, we will. - wontstoptalking, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8Earthquakes in Illinois, floods in Iowa and dams exploding in Wisconsin, earthquakes in China, Heath Ledger, and now Stan Winston.
2008 is turning out to be a bitch. - wontstoptalking, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7Heaven will be full of animatronic velociraptors!
- chrissku, on 06/16/2008, -1/+8The title of the blog "Aint It Cool News" doesn't seem appropriate.
- NovaPrime9, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7When I read the headline, only one word came to mind. It was, quite simply, "*****."
- Xihix, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7Tim Russert was a pretty sad loss too...
- wontstoptalking, on 06/16/2008, -1/+8XKCD is going to be really sad :'-(
- Rippleeffect, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7I don't know why... maybe I'm just tired at the office, but I stuck an extra A in Stan. Had to do a doubletake.
- axalon, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7Wow a lot of Hollywood heavyweights are passing away...
- Miamisun, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7I love Monster Squad!! RIP to a legend.
- t.toe, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6I am in complete shock. I have always admired his work! I hope his legacy will live on through his studio.
- Budkin, on 06/16/2008, -1/+7I'm not going to believe this until I see something mainstream. Please don't let it be true.
- Amadeus2490, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5Next on my watchlist: George Carlin.
The very thought of him dying makes me feel terrible. - amanilaenvelope, on 06/16/2008, -7/+12Good night, sweet prince.
- Faken, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5Great place to start a theological discussion assclown. People share their grief in different ways, who the hell are you to mock them? Just another disrespectful imbecile...
- jblade, on 06/16/2008, -1/+6Special effects and makeup guru Stan Winston passed away on Sunday, June 15th in Los Angeles, California. He was 62.
Winston died at home Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma.
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=46 ... - MoralThreat, on 06/16/2008, -0/+5Damn.
RIP Stan. There will never be another like you. - kathcom, on 06/16/2008, -1/+5I agree with Budkin- I'm still hoping this isn't true.
- atavena, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Truth.
- Erodeo, on 06/16/2008, -5/+9Me too. He was the best. Better than Savini, Baker, or Bottin
- ThatEvilGuy, on 06/16/2008, -1/+5Rest in Piece Stan! thanks for all your brilliant work.
I always preferred it to CGI ***** they give us today. - Spacemonkey43, on 06/16/2008, -1/+5MSNBC just confirmed it. RIP and thanks for the memories!
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Considering how many thousands of famous/important people there are, it makes sense that some of them die. Except Rick Astley. Rick Astley is God.
- inactive, on 06/16/2008, -1/+5You ruled man. Even when Terminator 2 went all CG, James Cameron still insisted on you doing the battle sequences that take place in the future.
