- geogeer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+59To be honest I find him honest. Sometimes he is meaner than need be, but he gives people the straight up goods.
- anonymousmedic, on 11/03/2009, -0/+36He's like Kenneth, the bad-ass mail clerk with a heart of gold.
- lead2thehead, on 11/03/2009, -0/+35He's not a heartless person. But after listening to hundreds of auditions per day, most of which SUCK and the people singing know that they suck, he starts to lose his patience. I would too.
- anklesnap, on 11/03/2009, -1/+33Very cool of him
- Sybaek, on 11/03/2009, -0/+27Funny how a man's television persona is used to judge his character.
- awtripp, on 11/03/2009, -2/+25Don't get too mushy here, he expects her to be a star on American Idol in 17 years.
- billthejim, on 11/03/2009, -0/+19Because if you can afford the $160,000 for the treatment, American health care is pretty good
- ileftfark, on 11/03/2009, -2/+20How much pocket change did you donate?
- drunkenoaf, on 11/03/2009, -1/+19Sigh.
The child has to be flown to the USA for "pioneering treatment" -- i.e. it's just been developed, and it's only in the USA at the moment.
Sadly for this child, US medical treatment is not free. Hence Simon Cowell's payout. - NewFoundGoni, on 11/03/2009, -0/+16Medical research is just fine here. It's the health COVERAGE that's lacking. Douche.
- thegamingguy, on 11/03/2009, -2/+15Way to go Simon!!! Great story.
- Shakuras, on 11/03/2009, -0/+12He's not Mr Nasty, he's straight out stating the facts.
- spookyttws, on 11/03/2009, -1/+12I've never thought of him as a bad person, in fact he's the type of person we're all told to be: he's honest.
- Alli3388, on 11/03/2009, -1/+12Why? The treatment has to be at the beginning stages of use at some point. Can't happen all at once in all countries. Just reality. Live with it.
- xaeon, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10Ladies and gentlemen, I present the worst maths I've ever done in my life.
For those of you sharp enough to notice my mistake *ahem* the actual value is $1836. Wow. Just, wow. - kidtwist, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10The problem is how things are paid for. There is pioneering health care being done in Britain as well as the US (and elsewhere). The reason this child is coming to the US for treatment is because the pioneering care she needs happens to be done here. The quality of care you can get in the US is very good as well as fast if you have the money on hand to pay for it.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10What are you pan handler?.
- VinceIP, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10$160,000 to Simon Cowell is like $5 for us.
- danwallace, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10I love how a celebrity makes a donation and they're suddenly a saint. If we compared his net worth to mine, I donated more when I put 2 bucks in the jar for a remembrance day poppy the other day.
- TurboTex, on 11/03/2009, -0/+9$250/yr eh? Livin the good life
- jsuther, on 11/03/2009, -4/+13Amazing that most of the supporters of universal healthcare can't connect the dots like drunkenoaf just did. The primary reason the US has this "pioneering treatment" is because they are allowed to make a profit when they take risks and innovate new treatments and procedures.
- mintedmeadow, on 11/03/2009, -3/+11@xaeon: You do realize that the cost of research and development is not free and can be extremely expensive depending on the condition, correct? Which is better: that we find ways to spend money on costly experimental treatments, or that we just don't do it at all because it's a lot of money?
- breadfred, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Too ***** right. None of the other judges has the heart to tell the ugly truth. I sing like the Obnoxious Twins (if you do not know what I mean, google it. And where earplugs.) I will not go on a talent show, as I don't have any. I am also not deluded, unlike many contestants on his show.
Where is this idiocy coming from that you have to be telling someone a lie if they are ***** horrible? Tell they have a face for the radio, a voice for a column in the newspaper, Don't tell tell'm ***** lies; people should be taken for adults who can take the truth. - xaeon, on 11/03/2009, -5/+13@jsuther Yeah, pioneering treatment that you can only afford with donations from TV stars. Great.
- drunkenoaf, on 11/03/2009, -4/+11Because the child has to be flown to the USA for "pioneering treatment". Sadly, US medical treatment is not free.
- thebreach, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7As a mucisian I am glad he helps rid the world of people who cannot sing but think they can by telling them straight up that they should never sing in public again.
- xaeon, on 11/03/2009, -1/+8They don't turn anyone down if they're stumping up $800,000 in cold hard cash. You only get turned down if the insurance company has to pay that and you once had a cold back in '86.
- TheyCMeTrollin, on 11/03/2009, -3/+10he's a dick for the sake of being a dick. he's the evil brittish villian. the show is as fake and staged as they come, he's just playing his role
- sh0rtstop00, on 11/03/2009, -2/+9Simon Cowell doesn't care about American babies. - Kanye West
- TheBifman, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7Notice how he's referred to as the jerk, yet he never interrupts or talks over the other judges...meanwhile they do it to him every goddamn show.
- kingmanic, on 11/03/2009, -1/+8The regular treatment isn't working so her family wants to fly her to the US for an experimental treatment. At one time some of the most advanced diabetes treatments were an experimental and only available in Canada and you would have had to fly to Canada for it.
- maddprof, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6He donated what they needed to get their daughter treatment - not to make them rich.
I think he donated the perfect amount. - camaroz06, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6Why should he have donated more?
I dont even donate ".000001%" of my salary to anything so he is a better person than I am. - breadfred, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5You don't have a ***** clue, do you? There WILL be people who will not get treated under our NHS. Majority of this will be in the experimental stage. Just to bring you in the picture; more people get treated in the UK in the NHS, for a lower average cost, then in your country. Please take into account that you have to see this not in exact number, but in percentages. (ie there are more people living in your country; but I strongly believe you will ignore this fact. Go ahead. *****.)
- ChronicColonic, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5It is only because the baby can sing.
- McDutchie, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6Did you notice how this involves the incredible luck of a $160k donation from a TV celebrity? The US system might be superior for those who (a) have that kind of money and (b) need rare and specialist care. Meanwhile, the poor (and the not all that poor) are left to die in the gutter because they don't deserve to live. Seems like anti-univeral healthcare people don't consider this to be a problem worth thinking about.
- steviesteveo, on 11/04/2009, -1/+5Uh, the NHS just doesn't do research. It treats sick people.
- kingmanic, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4$800,000...not $160,000. As well it's an experimental treatment that might be better. Once the treatment is proven the cost would go down as the tools and expertise required spread. If the treatment is definitively better then the UK NHS would cover it.
- drunkenoaf, on 11/03/2009, -2/+6Very good of him. It's also superb public relations. Money can't buy that sort of coverage... oh, hang on. D'Oh.
- Alli3388, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Because any AMERICAN would also have to pay $800,000 dollars for the same treatment!!!
- Alli3388, on 11/03/2009, -1/+5When the healthcare is being provided 1) by a country other than the one you're a citizen of, and 2) when it's being provided in the United States.
- camaroz06, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Good for Cowell, I bet % of salary wise he donates more than I do to good causes.
- piattorney, on 11/03/2009, -1/+5Tony is a great guy!
- linagee, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4You only make $27.75 a month? Is that before or after income taxes?
- steviesteveo, on 11/04/2009, -2/+5Well, see this word "option" ? It doesn't mean that the private hospitals all go away. The democrats want to give you the option of using publicly funded healthcare.
- grungegbunny, on 11/03/2009, -6/+9That's curious. I thought the UK had universal health coverage for its citizens. Why would he need to donate any money at all?
- TurboTex, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Contrary to popular belief, those people know they're awesome and Simons just ***** on them. They'll become stars.. you'll see!
- geogeer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3It always costs money to provide, the question is who provides the money?
- DarthVolta, on 11/04/2009, -3/+6With an analogy that poor, and a name like that, I'm sure you're all for a calm and reasonble discussion of the subject...
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -5/+8What's sad for this child is that she had to be flown to another country for pioneering treatments.
