- hark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Well Kazakhstan should be happy.. i heard somewhere that there has been a spike in tourists since the movie. And also, people that have never heard of Kazakhstan now know about it. Although Cohen pokes fun at the country.. people know its just for laughs and most of it isnt real.

just because Kazakhstan is portrayed the way it is in the movie doesn't mean it actually is a rundown, rapist infested country - snakesonasam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30lets hope theres no sexy time with kazahk first lady
- subxero37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Infested?
- fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24The part of Borat supposedly shot in Kazakhstan was actually shot in a poor part of Romania, if I'm not mistaken.
- robdavy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19What a horribly designed, ad-invested website...
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"I am going to Kazakhstan. Pause. Not!"
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15you are not mistaken
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15they do have add ons for fire fox so that you don't see the ads

Modems in north America are also only capable of 52Kbps over the phone lines, its a limitation on the lines. - pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Sacha's probably going to pull a reverse-Borat by acting American and seeing what happens in Kazakhstan. If not, he should.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9What a terrible idea. He's going to have to wear a blue hat for being a jew.
- lazyrussian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I have many friends in college who are transfer students from Kazakhstan. Most of them loved the movie and thought it was absolutely hilarious, as false as it was.
O, btw, they have 52 kbps internet collection, not 56, but 52...so says my Kazakh computer scientist friend. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think the entire thing could've fit in the summary.
- kiwiboyus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I recommend renting/Netflixing Long Way Round if you want to get an idea of how people live in Kazakhstan. It's a series Ewan McGregor did riding a motor bike across Europe to the USA, very cool.
- jcenters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The cheerleader, she take no hurt. Very nice! I'm going to take brain, then make sexy time. Chenqui.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This article is a lame publicity stunt.
- rocket2dmn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@hexx54 - I agree.
What if the United States was actually the same as it is portrayed in movies? - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The article sucks as well. HALF THE article is in CAPITAL letters. Truly ANNOYING.
- surfmadpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I remember a quite recent newsitem that says Borat's the top selling DVD in Kazakhstan. So they apparently get the humour, don't worry.
edit: here it is: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/03/09/wborat109.xml - beatphats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You people are idiots. Does everybody have to put "/sarcasm" after an obviously sarcastic comment?
/sarcasm. - aschmack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They have DVD players there?
- desqjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No, yes.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it just me or does Sacha Baron Cohen look like Sylar (from heroes) in that picture of him?
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't get it. This article says the guy wants the government to censor the DVD, but the quote says "I said no but I've had a rethink and I've told Sacha that I'll go with him if the Kazakh authorities sanction the DVD version of Borat there. That's the only way we'd both feel safe and welcome."
These authors DO know that "sanction" means approve, right? Or is this entire article based on one person's misunderstanding of the word "sanction" ? - NonFluro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If so, that's still alot better than putting out a warrent for his arrest for "insulting Turkishness".
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry, that movie had entirely too much naked fat man in it.
- desqjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I love that scene in Bowling for Columbine where Michael Moore goes to South Central with another middle aged white guy. If you bought into the movies youd think they would be shot on site. Its just a neighborhood- there is no where in the US that I wouldnt go during the day. (at night, thats a different story...)
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the thing is that he's against the DVD offending anyone, but then he reconsidered it, and thinks that if the Kazakh government sanctions (as in, is completely OK with) the release of an unedited version, then he'll feel safe, because it'll mean the government isn't really against the people, nor does the government want to hurt them or anything, russia-style.
- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Word of the day is "infested", apparently.
- desqjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah and is says that the guy wont go unless it is withdrawn from sale, and then that he wont go unless it is approved for sale (which makes sense). Crap site fo sho.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think Cohen is trying to push the Kazakh government to see what they do. If they don't allow him in, it will seem like (more) bad publicity for the poor country.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yea man, I really think that.
I was kidding, you know, quoting the movie the story is about? - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right. The author of the article doesn't know what 'sanction' means and has jumped to incorrect conclusions. So he's saying that he won't visit Kazakhstan unless the DVD has official government approval. He doesn't want it withdrawn from sale at all.
From answers.com:
1. Authoritative permission or approval that makes a course of action valid. See synonyms at permission.
2. Support or encouragement, as from public opinion or established custom. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They backport it to VCR.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't believe sacha was banned in the country, however, Russia banned the movie completely and kazakhstan wouldn't allow a theatrical release.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think you better read up and check a few other sources rather than 1 movie....
- cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's more ironic that he was able to make megabucks about a country he's never been too (i.e. experience its real culture). Gotta love TV [and youtube] to shape everyones' perceptions nowadays.
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How lovely! He's finally gonna meet his true dad!
- GavinZac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1those scenes are filmed in romania. ironically, borat spends much of the film making fun of roma gypsies, and that didnt stop him going there.
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't resist Borat impersonation... must... digg... up...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was skeptical of you claim until i clicked on the link. i was shocked.

That was what they were trying to do... - nubi78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Is it me, or did I just read the most disjoint/pointless/dull batch of comments by my fellow digg citizens? Normally I find entertainment in your words, but this evening, I found only tears.
- Uberdork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sasha Baron Cohen has a Death Wish
There, I fixed it. - dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not only that, but the summary is false. Cohen's co-star is not keeping him from going.
Buried as innacurate. - phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1he'll be ***** shot.
