- Nickolassc, on 03/01/2009, -2/+196Hello Americans, I'm Paul Harvey. You know what the news is, in a minute, you're going to hear...the rest of the story.
Born in 1918 just as WWI was ending in Tulsa Oklahoma, paul was a typical american boy. 1921, 1921. It was year tragedy struck young Paul's family when he was only three years old, his father, Harry Harrison Aurandt, was murdered. Aurandt, born in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania in 1873, was 47 years old at the time and a civilian employee of the Tulsa Police Department. He and a friend – who was a Tulsa police detective – were rabbit hunting while off-duty when approached by four armed men who attempted to rob them. Aurandt was shot and died two days later of his wounds, leaving behind his wife, nee Anna Dagmar Christensen, a daughter aged 12, and his son paul.
But paul didn't let that stand in the way of his passion as a boy, making radio receivers. In 1933, at a high school teacher’s suggestion, he started working at KVOO in Tulsa, where he helped clean up and eventually was allowed to fill in on the air, reading commercials and news.
Later, while attending the University of Tulsa, Paul continued working at KVOO as an announcer, and later as a program director. Paul spent three years as a station manager for a local station in Salina, Kansas. From there, he moved to a newscasting job at KOMA in Oklahoma City, then moved on to KXOK, in St. Louis, where he was Director of Special Events and also worked as a roving reporter.
In 1940, Paul married Lynne Cooper of St. Louis. Lynne was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Washington University in St. Louis and was a former schoolteacher. Paul himself was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha at Culver-Stockton College in Missouri. They met when Paul was working at KXOK and Cooper came to the station for a school news program. Paul invited her to dinner, proposed to her after a few minutes of conversation and from then on called her "Angel," even on his radio show. A year later she said yes.
In the same year, 1940, Paul moved to Hawaii to cover the United States Navy as it concentrated its fleet in the Pacific. He was returning to the mainland from assignment in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Paul served briefly as an enlisted man in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II from December 1943 until March 1944.
After leaving military service, Paul moved to Chicago, where in June 1944, he began broadcasting from the ABC affiliate WENR. He quickly became the most popular newscaster in Chicago. In 1945, he began hosting the postwar employment program Jobs for G.I. Joe on WENR. Paul added The Rest of the Story as a tagline to in-depth feature stories in 1946. The spots became their own series in 1976. On April 1, 1951 the ABC Radio Network debuted Paul's News and Comment "Commentary and analysis of Paul each weekday at 12 Noon". Paul was also heard originally on Sundays; the first Sunday program was Paul's introduction on April 1st. Later, the Sunday program would move to Saturdays. The program has continued ever since.
And as you have probably guessed by now, that boy who's father was murdered, grew up to be the one and only, Paul Harvey, yes Paul Harvey. And now ladies an gentlemen, you know the rest of the story. - BloodWenis, on 03/01/2009, -13/+146and now we know the rest of the story!
- DangerCollie, on 03/01/2009, -3/+102Paul Harvey.....good day.
- RezzedOut, on 03/01/2009, -0/+55I always will remember that phrase, "Now you know...the Rest of the Story." I looked forward to it each day to learn about the twist on the story he was telling. He's the first one to tell me about the BOSE radio! I can't believe he is gone. Radio won't be the same without him. Rest in Peace.
- BlueAyez, on 03/01/2009, -0/+55You could tell he lost a piece of himself when she died. His voice was never quite so vibrant after that. And now friends he's back with Angel. That's the rest of his story.
- amauldin71, on 03/01/2009, -0/+41There goes another part of my childhood.
- terracottapai, on 03/01/2009, -2/+40Damn, surprised he made it this far.
I'll miss his program, lots of good memories from when it came on right after school. - Matt2k, on 03/01/2009, -1/+37I remember one hot summer helping my dad on construction jobs hanging siding and windows, and every evening we would always listen to Paul Harvey on the way home. My dad would buy me a Pepsi at the gas station while he cracked a brew from the cooler and we listened to the rest of the story. He will remain a fond part of my memories forever. The guy had a great narration
- ChaosProfessor, on 03/01/2009, -5/+37Now I would like to tell you about the Super amazing air mattress
- foucaultsvac, on 03/01/2009, -1/+33Page two...
- compgeek, on 03/01/2009, -0/+30RIP Mr. Harvey your trademark line will never be forgotten and your stories with an interesting twist were always a major highlight of my morning radio listening. A truly great on air personality has left us people
- big186, on 03/01/2009, -0/+30he will be missed
- TheVoxHumanus, on 03/01/2009, -1/+31And now let me tell you about the Bose Wave Radio...
Just kidding. He's been roundly criticized for transitioning so smoothly into advertisements that might confuse his elderly listeners.
I loved Paul Harvey and looked forward to his broadcasts. I can remember connecting with my father over some of his stories -- an awesome gift to give to anyone.
He will be missed. But hey, he lived a good life, moved people, and was a source of entertainment for far longer than I've even been alive.
Good day. - rvaldes04, on 03/01/2009, -6/+35Greatest. Orator. Ever.
- uoitbug, on 03/01/2009, -0/+26going to be missed... Rest in peace
- SwiftKick34, on 03/01/2009, -0/+20This really makes me sad. I remember him coming on at 11:30 while I was a child. Rest in peace.
- jasdf, on 03/01/2009, -0/+17I grew up listening to Paul Harvey.
Good Day. - TheInformer, on 03/01/2009, -1/+17I'm going to miss that safe voice that I listened to on those long nights on the road.
R.I.P. Mr. Harvey. - tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -0/+15I remember every day after football and basketball practice, my dad would drive me home and The Rest of the Story would always be playing. I would always try to guess what the "thing" was, and my dad would always know the answer.
I love childhood memories. Thanks for providing them Mr. Harvey. - Mankind121, on 03/01/2009, -0/+14R.I.P.
Most memorable voice in radio - Nickolassc, on 03/01/2009, -3/+16Wow really? I think Keith has a long way to go before he can legitimately criticize Mr. Harvey.
- friday1970, on 03/01/2009, -1/+14I heard him the other week or so ago. Something did not seem right about his voice. It felt tired, raspy, like a really bad cold. I knew something was wrong, but hoped it was something temporary. Tonight, I learned he's passed on. Man, I'll miss his voice on the radio.
RIP, Paul, may heaven be your next broadcast audience. Good day.... - jayzDigga, on 03/01/2009, -3/+15He was the greatest orator ever!
- randalla, on 03/01/2009, -0/+12I wasn't an avid listener, but when I heard him I was always entertained and looked forward to what he had to say. I will miss knowing that he's out there. The world has lost a great man.
- tkaStryc9, on 03/01/2009, -1/+12Yea, that might be because people here know how to show respect for an American icon.
- pagan57, on 03/01/2009, -0/+11Rest in peace
- JJ2K1, on 03/01/2009, -1/+11I thought WW1 was fought in Europe and not in Tulsa Oklahoma?
- BloodWenis, on 03/01/2009, -0/+9Macular Degeneration is a real bitch, but it is soothed by the sweet sounds of my Bose Wave Radio
- Lleu, on 03/01/2009, -0/+8I remember listening to him every Sunday in the car on the way home from church as a kid. When I worked in faster food as a teenage we used to try and guess what the first commercial would be for, the winner would get a free meal that day. Then a bit later in life I found him again one day on the way to work. He's really the one celebrity personality that I can link to different stages in my life. Rest in Peace Mr. Harvey. Because of you we know the rest of the story..... good day.
- friday1970, on 03/01/2009, -4/+12Keith Olbermann needs to nominate himself daily as the worst person in the world. ***** idiot, he is.
- Nickolassc, on 03/01/2009, -0/+8You got me. I realized I made the mistake after it was too late to change. I was trying to get this edited fairly quickly to get near the front of the article.
- reiggin, on 03/01/2009, -0/+8He didn't broadcast on NPR. He was part of the ABC Radio Network.
- jasdf, on 03/01/2009, -0/+8Great story, memories like that last a lifetime.
- jonnyboy88, on 03/01/2009, -2/+10I'll miss his bong ads the most:

- maf54, on 03/01/2009, -0/+6While he was a great speaker, and I loved listening to him on the radio, there are definitely a few people out there who are better orators than Paul Harvey.
Everything I know about macular degeneration I learned from Paul Harvey. - Midtowner, on 03/01/2009, -0/+6I would digg that multiple times if it were possible.
- DaviDTC, on 03/01/2009, -1/+7People will if the site goes down? Better to have one before it goes down.
- bnorman, on 03/01/2009, -2/+8Damn.
