- TheCount, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7The tree says, "You almost had me? You never had yourself!"
- Zippo, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7Cars are designed to crumple like this on purpose. It's important that cars crumple upon impact as it absorbs a LOT of the kinetic force in a crash. If a car were to remain rock-solid and undamaged upon a powerful impact, you'd probably be snapped in two.
An added bonus is that the car companies get to sell you replacement parts and mechanics get to fix your car. It's beneficial for your safety, as well as their wallets... just not your wallet.

- pjkli, on 03/14/2008, -2/+1Energy means nothing without some kind of outlet. Thus we use force to quantify the energy acted on a body.
Second law
Observed from an inertial reference frame, the net force on a particle is proportional to the time rate of change of its linear momentum: F = d[mv] / dt. Momentum is the product of mass and velocity. When the mass is constant, this law is often stated as F = ma (the net force on an object is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newtons_first_law - NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Energy certainly means something, if you calculate the correct answer to the correct energy equation (aka don't use the one I posted), you may not be able to draw quantitative conclusions, but you know the wreck is going to bad regardless.

- nascarnate326, on 03/14/2008, -1/+10You have to remember, these pics were taken after the cops/firefighters cut the hell out of the car to get the idiots out. I hope he, and the rest of this retarded nation learn from this.
- IphtashuFitz, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5True, but the first few photos where the car is still sitting next to the tree still show a ton of damage. Those on-scene photos show serious damage to both the front and rear of the car - just look at the direction of the tires. The firefighters would have cut off the roof and peeled it back, torn out the dash & steering wheel, etc. to free the trapped occupants. They wouldn't have realigned the wheels, etc.
My brother once drove into a concrete wall at around 40mph, hitting the front right corner of the car. That didn't cause anywhere near the amount of damage to his car (An Acura Integra) that this car shows and yet he ended up needing to be cut out, got a helicopter flight to a trauma center, and ended up with a metal rod in his leg. Looking at those on-scene photos it amazes me that anybody got out of that wreck alive. - g111y, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1oi, no need to get the nation involved in this *****'s idiocy!

- ricksite, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1That picture isn't quite accurate at showing the car's destruction. The police photos are better (It still looks f'ed up). The firefighters would have cut the car apart to extract the people. That picture shows a picture of the car with the parts that were cut off piled on top.
- ASSASSYN360, on 03/14/2008, -2/+1Nice hood.
- BrotherMonk, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4I think many people are overlooking the fact that they had to cut off (with the "Jaws of Life") the roof of the car to remove the passenger, and upon taking that structural support out of the equation the car became a crumpled mass of metal.
- drastik21, on 03/14/2008, -3/+3Who's overlooking it? You're just the first person to comment on it.
- elipabst, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2You realize the frame in that car isn't made of bamboo. The convertible version of that car manages to drive around just fine without that structural support and doesn't crumple into a mass of metal on its own. The vast majority of the damage was due to the impact with the tree.
- Chirp08, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1the car will not implode when the roof is cut away, it will just have no strength, sitting there stationary it might throw off some fender gaps, and it shouldn't be driven, but in no way does it contribute to any of the damage that you are referring to.

- alpha94, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I've seen some spectacular high speed wrecks while racing at a track but I can't imagine how anything like this happened on the street. Even the rims are bent all over the place. WTF?
- ricksite, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2During a wreck at a race, a car may come in contact with another car or the wall. When this happens, the car may spin and parts may fly off. When this happens, the car is loosing energy and it will slow down and eventually come to a halt. When a car hits a tree at, say, 55mph, it goes from 55 to 0 pretty much instantly (i.e. much greater force).
