- cmiller1, on 10/11/2007, -22/+4Once upon a time in Toontown, there was a cat that had it all:
Fortune and fame, top of the game, up until he hit the wall.
Now he makes a living downtown, walking to a brand-new beat,
Slippin' through the new day, trippin' on a two-way ticket down a one-way street.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Who's that cop cracking up crime? Stop the clock. Hope he gets here on time.
Let's go Bonkers, yeah, totally nuts. Bonkers, no if's, and's, or but but's,
Bonkers, someone's stealing his show? Can't see ya', gotta' go-go!
He's so Bonkers, way out on the street. Bonkers, he's most definitely.
Bonkers, a little bit out of his mind, but ain't that bobcat one-of-a-kind?
Ready for some big surprises? It's bound to get a bit extreme!
Look out, Piquel, you never can tell, he's gonna' make your life a scream!
Bonkers with his pal Miranda, staking out some shaky ground.
Jitters gets the jumbles, grumbles only mumbles every time he comes around!
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Who's that fawn stealing his heart? The heat is on, a party's about to start!
Let's go Bonkers, yeah, totally nuts! Bonkers, no if's, and's or but but's,
Bonkers, someone's stealing his show, Can't see ya', gotta' go-go!
OH NO!
Bonkers, things are getting out of control, he's caught in a trap, ready to snap,
Zappin' the cap'n and takin' the rap.
But you can't hold back that wacky attack, that's why he's still a star,
'Cause you're Bonkers, Bonkers, Bonkers, Bonkers!

- mourne, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10At the point of smashing it, I think it's about the principal, not the money.
- ventralnet, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1For XM, as with any corporation..... its for the money
- cthellis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1...and that principle basically feeds right into money.
"We're pissed enough that not only are we going to cancel our subscriptions, but we're also going to destroy any incentive to RE-subscribe, so... suck it, XM."
It's certainly a question of whether or not this will make ***** difference to XM (or whatever merged conglomeration may be upcoming), but certainly it also creates a public relations headache as well, and brings "freedom of speech" arguments--at least in regards to expressly warned "EXPLICIT CONTENT!" channels on a subscribed-to-specifically-so-we-can-get-content-like-this service--to the fore.
- JoCliMe, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Like XM cares...let's say they do bring them back...oh, better buy new receivers! yay, more money!
- domeyerj, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You assume the people breaking their receivers would actually want to go back if they put a show back on the radio. I would guess that even if they were given the chance to have a free replacement and 3 months of service they would refuse, because it's about the principle, not the service.
- Falldog, on 10/11/2007, -4/+53Non O&A fan subscribers should use this opportunity to get some free service.

"only the most listened to show on XM"
He wasn't talking about XM, he was talking about FM radio.
People are so funny when they're still in the closet. - skubiszm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6@frodsteamin2
Please provide a source for your claim that they are the most listened show on XM. Last time I checked there are no ratings on satellite radio. - sparql, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8There is not a standard ratings system like FM has, but XM does keep track of what their listeners, listen to.
I don't have it in writing, but Eric Logan, EVP of Programming was recently on their show and told them they have the highest rated show on XM and "The Virus" is the highest rated channel. O&A had a hard time believing him, but he assured them he was being truthful.
Granted he could have been blowing smoke, and since XM doesn't have to publish listener information, it's all hear-say. - mourne, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2I never found them entertaining. But who am I. I find the Adam Carolla show entertaining. I also think Carlos Mencia is incredible. (and he doesn't steal peoples *****. I was at one of his shows 2 years before he supposedly stole the border joke)
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7The terrestrial radio show has terrible ratings because it was killed by David Lee Roth. Give them time..
- sparql, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The funny thing is, their show is a very acquired taste. The first time I listened to them, I understood what people like about them, but thought it wasn't for me. Upon a friend bugging me to give them another shot, I found I really, really liked the show. It was just very different from what I was used to listening to.
And I don't care what anyone thinks, some of the best comedians around are very active on their show. - KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Threemagic...
The David Lee Roth factor could be used for their first 3 months, maybe.. MAYBE their first 6 months. Not now. NOT AT ALL. Since it wasn't David Lee that destroyed the ratings to begin with, but Stern leaving. And at least in NY when they announced they were replacing Roth it got alot of press, etc... so its not like people didn't know they were there from day one.
If O*A took over first right after Stern, their ratings would not have been much higher then David Lee's
Face it, O&A used to be funny, they just arent anymore. Thats the problem.

- tripm, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1Smashers, it's a paid suspension. READ: Vacation... XM just did it to shut up the FCC and the "angry hordes"...
They'll be back on soon enough, and you'll have to go buy new satellite radios, which will send more money to the XM management that you are trying to punish.- Frozo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5XM's decision had nothing to do with the FCC, since it's a private company and the government can't regulate what they say (as long as it's legal). This was strictly XMs decision to calm the "angry hordes", yes. But not the FCC.
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Radios are already manufactured by someone else. The manufacturers (like Delphi) have already paid their license fees to XM to make the radios. If I want to give more money to Delphi I will...they didn't do anything.
- tripm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So, when a company sells x number of new units of their licensed XM technology, you think they won't continue to build more units, paying more fees to the XM corporation?
Also, I'm aware that the FCC does not at this time hold any power over satellite radio, but you must be aware that they are always trying to - and there IS pressure put on paid radio and cable by the same government that allows the FCC to ruin all other broadcasting.
- lpmiller, on 10/11/2007, -9/+45And yet, we don't do dick about the war, or the environment, or darfur, or pretty much anything. But screw with some morning DJ's or censor an HDDVD key, and righteousness prevails!

Good point. However, in this situation we (as in pissed customers) can actually take action that will have consequences for a powerful entity in this case XM (powerful as in wealthy).
Situations such as the Bush's war in Iraq, it has been demonstrated that there is little we can do about regardless of what we want. A solid majority of the American public wants either an end to the war or at least drastic changes in strategy to bring a gradual end to the war. Americans ousted the GOP rubber-stamp congress and senate in a referendum against Bush. We finally got the Baker-Hamilton Commission. It appeared that we my finally get at least some semblance of sanity in the nightmare that is Iraq. What does Bush do? Almost to every recommendation, Bush did the EXACT OPPOSITE of the bi-partisan commissions recommendations. Its almost as if Bush did it just to spite the people. Hell, now if you speak out too vocally, you are considered potential "terrorist" threat and thanks to Bush's suspension of Hebus Corpus, can be imprisoned and tortured without any due process.
I can go on and on. Long story short, you made a good point, but unfortunately, it is a mute one. And I truly mean unfortunate. - Weenis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's surprises me that people would be more offended by hearing a mentally ill homeless man on the radio than by the fact there are mentally ill living on the streets in NYC. And sterns rating on FM is zero.zero.. lol THATS BECAUSE HE IS NOT ON FM... Stern has more listeners then O&A do now, just on his sirius station. If Stern came back to FM he would... oh man.. he would ANNIHILATE O&A... Like 10x listeners if not much much more lol.
I love how people keep saying Stern is irrelevant without looking at the facts that he single handlely for the most part is the reason for the merge, his success on Sirius... also if he was irrelevant he wouldnt be still consistently talked about... and saying O&A got so many listeners when based on ratings they don't.

- hipnerd, on 10/11/2007, -11/+9What is lost in this debate on the hot-button topic of censorship is the fact that Opie & Anthony are a couple of no-talent ass clowns who far exceed the boundaries of good taste on a regular basis. They have the legal right to say whatever they want, but if the public, their advertisers or their bosses turn on them because they acted like dicks, that's their right. XM is not obligated to broadcast material they think it in poor taste.
Let's review a few of their finer moments:
* On April Fools' Day, they broadcast a fake report that the mayor of Boston had been killed in a car wreck. They continued perpetrating the "joke" even after the mayor's distraught daughter called in to confirm it was true.
* They announced a contest where the 107th caller would win "100 Grand." They played it up all morning. When they opened the phone lines, they told the 107th caller he had actually only won a "100 Grand" candy bar.
* They encouraged a couple to have sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral while on the air.
These aren't clever. They aren't funny. They are juvenile, offensive and cruel. If the government was trying to pass a law to ban this type of speech, I would be protesting in a heartbeat. But if XM wants to fire them for being unfunny pricks, to damn bad. If you piss off your boss, you get fired. Happens all the time and frankly, they deserve it.- sparql, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I'll agree with you that the April Fool's prank was on the mean side.
The 100 Grand prank is very, very funny. Especially if you've ever heard the audio.
And the St. Pats deal is offensive to some people, mostly those who are religious.
That's the thing with comedy, what you find funny can be very different from someone else. - hipnerd, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Pranks are only funny if the victims can laugh about it afterwards, or if the they are such dicks that they deserved it.
I don't think the people in St. Patrick's Cathedral were laughing, and I don't think they deserved it. You don't have to be religious to respect someone else's beliefs. The guy who thought he won $100,000 didn't "deserve it" either, and he certainly wasn't laughing.
Throw in their regular abuse and exploitation of homeless people while you're at it. That's classy. - cwilson, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I agree with sparql on this one. The 100 Grand prank was great! More importantly, what harm did it do? It annoyed the "winner" for a day. How offensive!
- CaptMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You failed to mention that all of these bits were from before they ever came to XM.
- hipnerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Two of them were bits that caused them to get fired from their previous two jobs. It's not like their show became radically different each time they were fired and moved to a different station.
- KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2sparq... i have the demented world cd that 100grand is on.. i coudlnt find it funny because of how distraught the man was when he found out it was a joke. It wasnt funny, it was mean.
- sparql, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I'll agree with you that the April Fool's prank was on the mean side.
- saynine, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7I did something like this. I smashed my XM receiver when I heard those morons got a show.
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2If only they could cancel EVERY radio talk show. Babbling morons, all.
- omgbanana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't believe those of you who are bashing Opie and Anthony have a clear understanding of what working in the radio business is like. Sure they're indecent, rude, and cruel, but do you all really want yet another Clear Channel clone that's programmed by a computer with a "DJ" who prerecords breaks during the commercials?
I love doing radio, but I've pretty much given up on it. There aren't many places left that do not suck. Radio is bound to be snuffed out by the Internet if the suits in the business insist on pushing it down this path. - maxx77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The "free service" stuff is a lie. I called to cancel last night. I was never once offered anything for free. The woman took my information, told me I'd be credited for a month since I'd already paid in adavance, and then put me on hold. I was on hold for at least 15 minutes, listening to their hold music, which is one of the XM jazz stations. After about three songs, everything went quiet. I don't know if I was disconnected, but I accidentally hung my cell phone up when I tried to check. Anyway, flash forward to today. My car radio is still activated. I'm going to try to cancel again tonight, but I have no hopes that I'll be offered any free service this time either.
- cwilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I cancelled a few months ago. It wasn't that I didn't like the service but I just wasn't using it anymore. When I told the CS rep on the phone that I was leaving for that reason, he offered me a discounted rate. I'm not sure why you didn't get offered anything. Usually something like that is offered by any company when you try to cancel.
- maxx77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I did tell her that I was cancelling because I was objecting to the O&A suspension. Maybe that's why I wasn't offered anything. I'm going to try again tonight but I'm still going to give the same reason. XM needs to know why I'm cancelling, otherwise this protest is pointless. I plan to re-activate in one month, but for 30 days they're not getting any money from me.
Check this space tomorrow (or late tonight). I'll post my results of attempt #2. - jasonj75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I got six months (or close to it) free last year for trying to cancel. The receiver was in a box, but it was free so I figured what the hell. Six months later I called back and they offered me 3 free plus 50% for a good while.
I was tired of calling so I said no, they then asked if I knew of anyone I wanted to give my receiver to, I said no. They then asked if I could sell the receiver, blah, blah, blah...It was like canceling AOL back in the day.
And lastly, if O&A fans are pissed the show was suspended, more power to them...They going to buy new receivers when the show comes back on 'better than ever' after XM apologizes? O&A didn't get suspended by XM mgmt...They were suspended by XM marketing to cause controversy, not because of it. Either that or they're clearing the way for Stern in the merger.

- Anarchyx2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Answer this question...
On XM RAW, there is a show where they are basically racist against non-blacks, and use the "N" word constantly. Non-blacks call in and get belittled, whereas blacks call in and are treated like royalty that are still victims of oppresion.
Is this not just as bad if not WORSE than what O&A did/said?? Yet XM doesn't drop the XM RAW show?
I even submitted a comment on the XM site, listing a complaint about the show and it's content, and never received a response. - MadOgre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was in Radio Shack just yesterday looking at XM and Sirius with the intent to purchase. HD Radio is looking more promising.- Anarchyx2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The only place where sat radio really applies when compared to internet radio or other options is in the car.
- KingGoonie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1HD radio will never. ever. take off.
- Br0s3ph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0This is bull *****! I am all for crude humor. Who isn't?(homosexuals) O&A are entertaining in its purest form and their suspension is just XM massaging the governments balls to smooth over their merger. The first amendment slowly burns a little more and yes, I am positive sexual fantasies involving the first lady are covered under the first amendment. I am pretty sure Washington put it in there because his wife was hot and he liked to hear about how people wanted to bend her over and.......
- tatical, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The Daily News (NY news paper) is ***** up, it reported that they were joking about rape. The guest didn't say anything about "raping" anyone, just ***** them.
- adrake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I didn't smash my XM unit, but I did cancel my service immediately last night. I should be getting a $4.62 refund soon.
- namelessuno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2 i will watch fox news for censored and sanized data.
of course i have canceled my cable too so i guess fox news no longer exists for either. - ShArKSe7eN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Gee, O&A get tossed off the air for something that someone else was saying/doing on their show. Why does this feel like deja vu all over again?
O&A should just give the finger to XM & start podcasting their show.- Weenis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1You do realize that they still have a 3 hour show that runs during prime time on free radio?
- ibeetle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This just in. Saw it on CNN (sorry it is not on their website yet). XM Satellite Radio is reporting that all retailers have notified them that all XM radios have sold out. It appears that people are buying radios just to smash them. It also appears that there has been a 100% surge in subscription. It appears that thousands are subscribing to XM radio service just call a few hours later and cancel. It is being reported that due to this huge surge in radio hardware sales XM is considering suspending other shows for 30 days.
XM is also considering making the statement that they are bigger than Jesus. - scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'M JUMPING ON YOUR CAKE, OPIE AND ANTHONY! LAUGH IT UP
- brada33928, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2OPIE AND ANTHONY SUCK. HOWARD STERN IS A ***** GENIOUS.
- Bigsby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2People are buying XM radios just to smash them? Oh man, this counter productive. No one realized they were actually supporting XM when they did this?
- SOhp101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1FYI XM subscribers,
just called right now and they offered me 30 days free subscription since I was still in my prepaid period. I took it since it was better than nothing. Gotta remember to cancel 7/27/07. - bsaitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1O&A suck, these people need to get a clue, not a free subscription
