- nebion, on 12/27/2007, -2/+1It isn't a matter of jealousy, it's a matter of people being disillusioned by seeing people get (I would hardly call it earning) huge amounts of money for questionable reasons.
The world is far from a meritocracy, where people who made the most money did so because they really did something valuable. Celebrities can simply bank on their celebrity status without any merit whatsoever.
I've made far more money than most people by my age, and while it has been based in part on merit, a lot of it has also been luck. I know a lot of people who have done more and better, but made less. - XopherMV, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3Paris didn't "earn" any money. She was HANDED the Simple Life because she ALREADY was a sheltered, trust-fund celebrity who never did an honest day of work in her life. THAT is what drew people to the show - watching some rich, stupid, undeserving ***** being forced to milk a cow or shovel *****. YOU try getting a show like that after walking in from the street. You'd be kicked out of the building as soon as you asked the secretary.
- blazes816, on 12/27/2007, -3/+50Paris is rich because she's famous. She's famous because she's rich. Therefor, if she had no inheritance, she would not have gotten rich on her own.

And Paris IS ugly. Her emaciated face looks like it was hit with a shovel.
The only reason people watch Paris Hilton or buy anything from her was because she was ALREADY rich due to her great-grandfather starting Hilton Hotels. If her family wasn't rich, she would have never landed The Simple Life. Her porno tape would be nothing special in a whole world of internet porn. And Paris, as stupid as she is, would be sitting in some trailer park, smoking cigarettes, popping out babies, and living off welfare.

- PasteEater, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2A substantial contribution to the world? You mean like owning a line of perfumes, like Paris? The same line that was bankrolled by her family? No then, I guess I haven't made any substantial contribution to the world. Great point. I haven't cured cancer, split the atom, or built a better mouse trap. Neither has anyone in this family. They own hotels and casinos. Explain to me how (aside from donating the proceeds from the sale of said businesses) anything this family has done has been a "substantial contribution to the world".
You need a ***** reality check. Paris got ***** on tape, and became famous for it. She parlayed that fame into making money. She's a full on idiot. Her family seems to agree with me.
No, it's not my money. The grandfather can do whatever he wants with it. I am agreeing with *his* decision to not give it to Paris. Apparently, he and I are in agreement that Paris is an embarrassment. By the way, it's not *your* money either.
And I don't "deserve" to judge her? I think you have no idea what deserve means. My dictionary defines it as "do something or have qualities worthy of reward or punishment". That being said, I stand by my original comment: she does not have any qualities that are worthy of reward, and therefore does not deserve the money.
Do us all a favor and think before you open your stupid ***** ***** holster.

- Noonward, on 12/27/2007, -10/+14I'm going to be honest here she hasn't done anything morally wrong and she is just a normal retarded girl what's the problem? Doesn't make her useless.
I just have problems with people being so susceptible to groupthink and not logic.
Her 'usefullness' is not a factor in her being her grandfathers granddaughter.
Don't be a ***** idiotic *****. She's a retarded slut, so? Shut up.- lsatkins, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3I agree. Plus her grandfather inherited his fortune from his father and now he decides to not let his heirs inherit money. That sounds pretty *****.
- grgt1994, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Actually, her grandfather was disinherited by his own father, who left his fortune to charity. Gramps then spent the majority of his life suing his father's estate and his father's charitable foundation.
- ZekeTsurai, on 12/27/2007, -2/+3She doesn't deserve to have that money. I mean what has she done to deserve it? Honestly. With all the ***** she's done, you can't possibly believe she'll keep the Hilton name as prosperous as it was before she stepped into the limelight. In my opinion, she'd just run it all into the ground. At least with him donating it to charity, he KNOWS it will be put to good use. Her "usefulness" IS a factor, a factor of whether or not that money will be used for good purposes.
- grgt1994, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1Why do you care how this family spends their money? It's not your money.

- jgzman, on 12/27/2007, -3/+3Personally, I object to anyone inheriting that kind of money. I consider it a detriment to society.
I would say no more than 100 million inheretance, per child, the rest must be returned. Charaties and suchlike could work wonders with that kind of cash. Heck, with this money, we might even be able to make real progress against homelessness and poverty in this country.
Of course, he's donating it to a charity that helps starving people in other countries. That's good too. With that kind of money, those folks might be able to make a life, and enjoy some kind of success.- grgt1994, on 12/27/2007, -1/+9I object to you or anyone else voting someone else's pocketbook.
- Lythium, on 12/27/2007, -1/+4I'm willing to bet that jgz never has to worry about reaching his self-imposed cap... For obvious reasons, people who would actually have to _give up_ the cash seldom make suggestions that smack of socialism.
- XopherMV, on 12/27/2007, -2/+2That's a great idea. There's absolutely no reason a family can't live on $100,000,000. Hell, they can still make 10% a year on the stock market or $10,000,000 per year. They can live on the interest alone.
The rich benefit way more than anyone else for having a stable society. They benefit from educated workers for their businesses, they benefit from a police force which discourages theft and keeps them safe, they benefit from fire departments which prevent their mansions, warehouses, and offices from burning down, and they benefit from the military which prevents foreign nations from coming over here and throwing them in the street. The rich should pay more than the rest of us, DESPITE the fact that they can afford to pay more in taxes than anyone else. - heypetray, on 12/27/2007, -1/+1sounds socialist to me. Capitalism is all about having no limit to wealth
- XopherMV, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and what's wrong with socialism? Europe is mostly socialist and they're kicking our ass on just about every measure of what makes a country great. The dollar is in the tank, but the Euro is doing great. Our schools blow, but theirs are terrific. Their roads and infrastructure are the best in the world while our roads and bridges literally fall apart. Their workers are educated and skilled and intelligent while ours are, well, look in the mirror.
Socialism in the US during the 1930's and 1940's made us great as a country in the 1950's after capitalism pushed us into the Great Depression in the 1920's. We really need MORE socialism, not less.

- Cayfox, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Like they say, you've gotta spend money to make money. And the more money you have to spend... well you see where I'm going with this. Most smart, hard-working small business owners and entrepreneurs can't afford to purchase a music or modeling career right off the peg.
- heypetray, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1You don't need money to make money. You need assets. Assets aren't always monetary.
- XopherMV, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Paris certainly used her ass-ets to make money. That porno tape made everyone check out the Simple Life.

- monospaced, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3That bitch's FATHER (son of said grandfather and subject of article) will get a PORTION of that diminished inheritance. Paris, on the other hand, will inherit what her FATHER is worth (maybe) in the next thirty or forty years. Sure she'll end up with less, but this isn't really Paris' inheritance we're talking about, it's Conrad's children's.

- wipis, on 12/27/2007, -0/+28Exactly. A guy I know in the music business was talking about how some singers have a large amount of their property owned by their own charities. All then need to do is host a fund raiser or two in their house and loan out their limo and the rest is paid tax free. And regardless of her inheritance she already has millions from daddy, endorsements, modeling, acting, music, and tied up in investments, bonds, and stocks. When your as rich as she was at birth all you need is a good accountant to stay rich.

- databoy, on 12/27/2007, -1/+29If a trust account, charity, foundation, non-profit corporation is set up correctly, then the principle is never spent.
$2.3 billion at 10% simple interest per annum is still a lot of spending money. Invested correctly the principle will grow exponentially over time.
All wealthy people have some sort of tax charity. You have either two choices pay an exorbitant amount of tax or set up a tax charity. Anyone who believes that some of the well known international charities are actually majority benefiting underdeveloped countries still believe in the tooth fairy. 90% goes into operational costs 10% goes to the cause. That 10% is the distributed profit margin after tax that profit making corporations pay out in dividends. - Vazel, on 12/27/2007, -0/+14Thanks for enlightening us imj and databoy. - mwhite114, on 12/27/2007, -5/+2For a 'tax dodge' it appears to be donating an enormous amount of money to good causes - http://www.hiltonfoundation.org/reports/16.pdf. In fact their grants appear to be the amount that you'd expect a charity with their capital to donate yearly.

- grgt1994, on 12/27/2007, -2/+1What does it matter who "controls" the funds? The ONLY beneficiaries of a charitable foundation are charitable causes. In other words, no funds from a charitable foundation benefit the family that funded it.
- Lixie, on 12/27/2007, -1/+7If only that were true. The charity can own the home they live in, making their $10ml property a tax free property, and they can claim giving money to "think tanks" as charitable donations. Which "think tanks" you ask? Why the ones owned and operated by their own children and friends. And that's what they do with the 5% they actually donate.
The other 95% percent is spent on operation costs. Presiding over a the North American Spotted Woodpecker Preservation Fund and hosting it's once a year charity dinner is a tough job, $9.5ml yearly salary is only fair.- grgt1994, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2Incorrect. A private foundation must qualify as a charity. The expenses you suggest would disqualify it, and subject the original transfer to transfer taxes, penalties and interest. Plus, the tax fraud would send the foundation directors to jail, all of em.
Digg me down, but I speak truth.

Tax avoidance is a legal way of paying less tax.
Tax evasion is an illegal way of doing so.
Paris Hilton's grandad is using a legal (albeit perhaps an immoral) way of paying less tax on his estate, hence it is tax avoidance not tax evasion.

- JoeVet, on 12/27/2007, -4/+1Correct...its called "operating expenses" and its how all the wealthy avoid taxes. The Bill Gates foundation is no different. It is set up for his kids to "manage".
- grgt1994, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Where do people get this *****? A charity can only benefit charity (i.e., the public good). The operating expenses can only be reasonable business expenses for services provided. If the family can provide the charity $100MM of services a year, then they get paid for that. But in reality, that just doesn't happen. The family get to sit on the board and get paid $2,500 a piece per year for attending one meeting. That's all. No percentage. No rent free real estate.
The Gates foundation is not a tax avoidance ploy. It's simply a statement by Bill that the government is incompetent at managing the funds the IRS (Congress) would rape from his family through estate tax. So better to let a foundation manage those funds for the public good. The truly disturbing side of this story is that the mega rich (who are in the best position to know) have concluded that our government is so corrupt, incompetent, and inefficient, that it's better to disinherit your own blood than let a dime fall into the government coffers.

I'd greatly prefer them just reduce their prices so we the customers, the ones who made them rich, get the benefit. Gates has been charging us all $Texas for his ***** OS, then blows it giving to random people. He's free to do it, but I don't do business with MS or Hilton or Buffet's companies after I find out stuff like this. It's just a case of guilty rich blowing their money on the poor to increase their public perception. If they really wanted to help society, they should have just charged a lower price for their goods so we would retain that wealth. I guarantee the money would be better used by the middle class than the poor.

ok, I'm going to take a stance here, this definitely is news. Grandpa Hilton is right, Paris Has tarnished their name, so much so that I wasn't even aware there was anybody in the family with any brains at all. I just assumed they were all inbred idiots, I mean, how do you raise a daughter like her?
I totally agree with Barron, leaving billions of dollars to poor people is a much better legacy than Paris and will definitely overshadow her in the long run. - databoy, on 12/27/2007, -8/+2There are two types of people in the world. Those who know how to make money and those who complain about people being financially successful.

We're all gonna be rich, and tax free, too! - rogerbly, on 12/27/2007, -3/+7Nikki was making good $ modeling for Fords and Trump Modeling well before 2001 when most first head of her and her $500 Million trust fund. She has Millions besides the trust. And we recently learned that she makes $30-$50K just to show at clubs to party... good pocket change.

- wrathofg0d, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Donating to self-run charities by incredibly rich individuals with non-disowned heirs is tax evasion and I can't believe people honestly think its really going to "charity". Get a clue.
- kalrhael, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Doesn't really matter, as much as I loath Paris Hilton, she's made millions upon millions by herself, by far the wealthiest of all the Hilton siblings.
