- drachemorder, on 04/16/2008, -7/+15When God says he is "jealous" it's not talking about jealous the way we think of jealousy. My singles pastor has been talking about something similar to this recently. He calls it "God's selfish will". God is all about himself and his own glory. But that's not wrong, the way it's wrong for people to be selfish or jealous. In God's case, it really is all about Him and His glory. It's okay for God to be selfish --- indeed, He MUST be selfish --- because that's what the reality is. He is jealous --- in other words, he can't share glory with another and can't tolerate anyone else being worshipped --- because there is no other who deserves worship. For him to do so would be a denial of the truth, which is that he alone is worthy of worship and glory.
What makes human selfishness wrong? It's wrong because being selfish inflates one's own importance at the expense of others, takes away from them, and detracts from them. But God cannot inflate his own importance because he is already all-important; he cannot take away from others because it all belongs to him in the first place.
So Oprah fundamentally misunderstands the nature of existence. Everything about the universe is an expression of God's will. Our own existence is an expression of God's will. Our very ability to worship God is something He gave us. Everything belongs to God by right because He is sovereign and He created it. Oprah's fundamental mistake is to look at moral good --- kindness, mercy, love, compassion, etc. --- as ends by themselves. She sees those as the fundamental truths of the universe, when in reality God is the fundamental truth, and the virtues she admires are mere expressions and reflections of God's character.- jamesbrownlord, on 04/16/2008, -4/+1
- lodibug3, on 04/16/2008, -7/+7God is a Jealous God... Just as a HUSBAND is JEALOUS of HIS wife.... God is JEALOUS of his relationship with his BRIDE...the CHURCH.
- camelseye, on 04/17/2008, -3/+3Yes, every emotion has a positive and negative side. Somehow jealousy has been completely relegated to the negative side. But jealousy, in it's place, is good--akin to loyalty and "protectiveness." Good is perfect, so His jealousy is only positive. Too bad Oprah doesn't understand this! (How silly to think that Almighty, All-powerful God is jealous "of" any human--looks like someone's popularity has distorted her perspective)

- these3remain, on 04/16/2008, -3/+10Oprah's New Age adherence is nothing new; what IS new is how in recent years she has chosen to step up her promotion of it. She's done this through the guests she has invited on her program including the assorted New Age gurus that she follows. What is particularly insidious about this is that there are many "Christians" who thought that Oprah was/is a Christian and therefore have purchased books, etc. promoted on her program. Because so many Christians are not discipled in the Word of God, many have been deceived by New Age teaching. 20 years ago when people like Dave Hunt and Tex Marrs first started talking about the infiltration of New Age teachings within the Body of Christ, most people were either clueless or skeptical. Now this apostasy continues to spread rampantly and Christians need to learn what the Bible teaches in order to gain the discernment required for the days we live in.
Oprah and New Age guru Marianne Williams (A Course in Miracles) are anticipating the formation of a cabinet level position with the next administration in a newly formed "Department of Peace" (Kucinek is another politician that supports this idea, too). It is no coincidence that Oprah has backed Obama from the get-go; she never does something for nothing. - MisterFreeze, on 04/16/2008, -13/+17Oh no, someone else is promoting an idiotic superstition, and it's not the idiotic superstition I believe in. - BibleNut, on 04/16/2008, -4/+6Then why read it at all? Why read our posts?
- JimmySpaza, on 04/17/2008, -6/+2Because atheists and liberals can't stand for people to be successfully proving how God exists...and because they can't stand it that there are like 100x more believers in God than there are atheists.
- TheCatsPants, on 04/17/2008, -1/+5There are more believers than atheists in the world, but they all believe different things, even the ones attending the same church. There's probably as many different religions as there are people. Everyone has their own world-view, and everyone thinks their own world-view is the right one. This is where tolerance and patience comes in. It's best to think that your own world-view is *probably* the right one. Oops. See, that's my world-view. Didn't mean to impose it on anyone. You call other people "fools" for not agreeing with you. It's not nice to do that. It certainly rubs me up the wrong way.

Hmmm. You're the one criticizing believers for grammar and spelling? Check out your own sentence structure first if you wish to have any credibility. BTW, there are atheist posters who also lack grammar/spelling/key-boarding skills who post on digg, too. Don't be a hypocritical grammar nazi - if you are going to be one, then at least get your own act together first and don't just point out the mistakes of Christians - point'em all out or don't bother.
- BibleNut, on 04/16/2008, -4/+6Then why read it at all? Why read our posts?
- congresssucks, on 04/16/2008, -2/+10I believe Oprah misunderstands, God is not jealous of us but is jealous for us. How would you feel if you helped someone and they turned around and thanked someone else for the help? Saying God has emotions like jealously is not putting Him in a box, it is showing He has a heart that can be grieved.
- exgop, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6The idea that people of different beliefs can get along in peace and harmony is a grand and noble idea. I am all for it.Oprah is just trying to be a feel good liberal, that is her right. The good news is that for the most part different belief systems DO get along in relative peace. I am referring to Christians ,Jews, Buddest Shinto, Pagans Atheist(except Communist) lets face it these belief systems while VERY different do get along. There is however a belief system that refuses to get along with anyone. How does the great Oprah handle those pesky little Islamo-Fascist?
- TheCatsPants, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3I think in the case of Islamo-Facist, it's the word "facsist" that would make them anathema to the principle that everyone can get along. I suspect that there might also be Christeo-fascists, Judao-fascists etc out there who want nothing more than to convert or dominate anyone who disagrees with their religious views. Imposing your will on someone is an act of violence, not of love.
- these3remain, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1"Imposing your will on someone is an act of violence, not of love." I would agree. However I personally don't know any "Christeo-fascists", "Judeo-fascists" or "Buddha-fascists" who view others who do not hold their religious views as "infidels" with a mandate given by their "god" to convert or kill those who do not. If you are aware of such, kindly cite evidence.
- TheCatsPants, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1There's certainly a few fundamentalist christians out there who would like everybody to convert. Or would like a theocracy in place of government to enforce their religious laws on everyone. You're right though, Islamic terrorists are prepared to do heinous things for their faith, but not all muslims think that way. If we persecute all muslims because of the actions of a few then they will have every right to start thinking the terrorists are right.

I know others who refuse to believe for that same reason.
- TheCatsPants, on 04/17/2008, -1/+2If that's what happened to her, I'm amazed she believes in God at all. Some people are just evil, even if they attend church. It makes my skin crawl.
- shanson13, on 04/17/2008, -3/+4It's sad that millions of people watch her show and actually believe that what she is promoting is good. She says she is a Christian...but she doesn't believe in Christ's own teachings? Christ taught that He was the Truth, the Life, and the Way...and nobody comes to Father God but by Him, the Son. He also was perfectly clear when He taught that if you reject the Son, you reject the Father as well. Oprah is teaching people to reject Jesus Christ as the Son of God and as our Savior...it's sad and expected in these last days. I pray for the millions of people being taken in by this false teaching that moves them away from Jesus...without Him they have no hope.
