- Nairebis, on 06/03/2009, -1/+42Before people start ripping on Newsweek, realize that a couple of weeks ago they completely overhauled their magazine, eliminating (paraphrase) "news you've already read on the web" and focusing more on in-depth analysis of current events. They've also eliminated the pop news section.
They may or may not succeed at what they're doing, but give them some credit for trying to change and provide something of value for your money in the new world. Certainly I think we can all agree that it's easy to find rapid-fire blasting of shallow news articles these days, but insightful analysis written by someone that seems to have a clue and seems to have actually done some research is much more rare.
So far, I like it. The analysis articles have been pretty interesting the last few weeks.
This Colbert thing is probably more experimentation. - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -9/+43………….,/;;;;;;;;;;;;;/„-~*'~„;/;/-~;;;/;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;'\„

- LemonMachete, on 06/04/2009, -0/+17What the ***** is wrong with his forehead...
- rightmindx, on 06/04/2009, -0/+13In TV industry jargon this would be called a ratings stunt.
- macfan93, on 06/04/2009, -1/+11So newsweeks going to get the colbert bump?
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -9/+19Newsweak being a joke, hiring a comedian to edit the magazine seems appropriate.
- MargotCross, on 06/03/2009, -3/+12perfect choice
- DirtPile, on 06/04/2009, -2/+10Tip of the hat, Newsweek.
- Jaman85, on 06/03/2009, -4/+11COLBERT FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!
- brucealmighty, on 06/03/2009, -2/+8If their print gets any tinier I will need stronger glasses just to read it.........not exactly 'boomer friendly' logic there.........
- DirtPile, on 06/04/2009, -0/+5The Alpha Dog himself!
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -2/+7This may very well be the first Newsweek I buy in my 22 year history
- Barackalypse, on 06/04/2009, -0/+4Here's a headline for them: Print media struggles to stay relevant in the age of digital media.
- Kate1240, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4Newsweek is a joke anyway
- mynemyne, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing...like the usual Newsweek editors, perhaps?
Sibel Edmonds:
Here is the first project report, this one based on my own first-hand documented experience. In 2003 Newsweek reporter Michael Isikoff interviewed me for, and then published a story on the FBI translation program. His report knowingly omitted crucial facts, directly relevant cases, witness statements and confirmed official reports, while advancing the FBI's already-discredited point of view...

- Subduction, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4In other words, Newsweek noticed its core demographic aging, and needed something to start pulling it back younger again.
Nothing better to get a younger demographic to sample your magazine after a redesign than a guest editor popular with the youngins, who also happens to have a TV show to promote it on. - TinternAbbot, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3Why should we give newsweek credit for changing its business model? We should only give the magazine credit if it starts producing quality content, something they have failed to do for some time.
- falconear, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3It's a scam and a con and a cheap gimmick...and yeah, I'm going to buy it. I've started to have this weird guilt about getting everything online for free, from news to comic books, and I'm just wondering who is going to provide content when nobody is making any money off of it. Is that me growing up or selling out? :)
- whahaa, on 06/04/2009, -1/+3Wag of the finger, Newsweek.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2Not with the new design. Your opinion is just so...April.
- NodOfficer, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2It's his signature wrinkle!
- mnocket, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2Yeah. Newsweek is kinda like the print version of MSNBC.
- danielonoda, on 06/04/2009, -2/+3and you sadly think Colbert is on your side.
- sauron256, on 06/04/2009, -1/+2Dugg for Stephen Colbert!
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -1/+2Colbert really is everywhere these days
- NMRgentleman, on 06/04/2009, -0/+1"insightful analysis written by someone that seems to have a clue and seems to have actually done some research is much more rare."
Well, in print maybe, and ESPECIALLY on television. In the blog world, I actually read it all the time. Lots of great blogs out there. - nigelmansell, on 06/04/2009, -1/+2if NASA names a space excercise machine after him, he can damn be an editor to a magazine.
- iceblizz, on 06/04/2009, -2/+3That's hilarious!
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1I was about to cancel my subscription as it really feeling like the newly retarded CNN in print form.
Now, after reading almost every word in the past two issues (with the third by the can ready to go), I can say positively that I will continue to subscribe.
And I read everything on the Internet 20 hours out of every day, so I'm up on everything.
Kudos! - SaxophoneGOD, on 06/04/2009, -2/+3This could very well lead to literary gold or internet histeria.
- Nairebis, on 06/04/2009, -0/+1I'm not saying there aren't blogs out there where someone has a staff of people doing research, and the blogger actually travels to the lands he's writing about, and actually meets the people he's writing about, and in many cases meets the leaders he's writing about...
But I haven't seen them.
The only blogs I've ever seen are people who comment on news stories written by other people using facts they discover through web searches.
Newsweek is hoping there is still an industry for professional journalists who actually do legwork and try and write something unique and interesting. - Nairebis, on 06/04/2009, -1/+2Give them credit relative to the rest of the old media who whine instead of adapt.
- whorunbartertwn, on 06/04/2009, -0/+1I agree with Nairebis, the new style of Newsweek is a win so far right down to the modernization of font and format. They've got enough relatively level coverage of varying content that it's a nice read to thumb through paying attention to what you like and skipping what you don't.
- odkin, on 06/04/2009, -3/+4Liberal media? What liberal media? I mean Colbert, Stewart, Franken, Huffington, Kos... they all just represent the average middle of the road mainstream American, don't they?
That's what the media tell us, so it must be true. Smart, honest, objective reporters and editors certainly couldn't have any kind of political agenda. They couldn't possibly be so stupid as to risk their last shreds of credibility, honor, and professional decency by pulling a transparent stunt that promotes a partisan hack. I mean, that would put the entire future of their magazine at risk
/s - AChopra, on 06/04/2009, -2/+2In other news, this will be the first Newsweek that I actually purchase...
- whorunbartertwn, on 06/04/2009, -1/+1Newsweek isn't too bad. I'm pretty pleased with their recent change in format, they're pretty much conceding the news to the internet and holding ground elsewhere.
- jesushchrist, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0Here's a headline for you: four times as many people read Newsweek as watch Colbert in any given week
