Even those that accept the quoted age of nine maintain that she had to have gone through puberty before being allowed to consummate the marriage, and that young marriages with delayed consummation were the norm. There are others who argue that the age of nine is a politically-motivated lie during the early Sunni/Shi'a schism, and point to other sections of hadith that indicate she was actually in her teens.

    Okay, I find most of the comments here to be reprehensible. There are extremists in any religion and while the Christians vs. Muslims thing has been going for the better part of a millennium, it's always a minority who are violent terrorists. There are more today, however, than on 9/11 and I think we can all agree why (dubya).

    If MJ can find some direction, focus and peace through faith, that's a good thing. Islam is stricter than most of Christianity and therefore may be a better fit for people like Michael Jackson who seriously lack any ability to maintain control over their lives.

    Well, speaking as someone who has actually spent a few months in Bahrain, no, most people there are actually quite poor. A small number of fabulously wealthy people have virtually all the money, living in vast walled compounds filling a city block each. MJ will fit in quite well with them, while the vast majority of the people scrape by in near poverty. There really isn't much of a middle class in Bahrain. You've either got money or you don't.

    Get your facts right before you start quoting inaccurate information. This is a perpetual myth and a total crock of *****. Under national law the age limit is 13, but it's never used. Under prefectural law (which is the one that matters) the age is usually 17 or 18 depending where you live. Given that many western countries set the age at 16 (e.g. the UK), Japan actually has stricter laws than many other nations.

There are about 1-2billion muslims in the world, and about 6billion people in the world--so that's about 1 muslim for every 6 people; and the average suicide bomb can probably take out about 10-20 people. So if there is some supposed "islam vs the rest of the world" thing going on, then simple math tells us that the muslims will definitely win this. Hell, it only took 19 muslims to kill 3,000 people--so imagine what 1-2billion could do (but everyone with half a brain knows that this won't actually happen).

If the passages are read in Syriac, then it indicates Mohammad was saying the the believers would get chilled raisins and cold drinks (to contrast with the fire and boiling drinks for the damned). To the contrary it is pretty common in japanese culture for young girls to marry men of a much older age. Age of consent is age of consent, period. Once a country decides it's ok at a certain age, the age difference is irrelevent. We still have 60 year old men marrying 20 year old women even in the US.
