I have no doubt that he actually thinks these things. Being a media personality means he should be a little more careful than most about how he conducts himself, and he failed in that regard. It's the rampant and unadulterated racism he was spewing during the arrest.
A lot of celebrities have gotten drunk, been arrested and made fools of themselves without ending their careers. Even a half assed publicist could have Mel make some appropriately contrite public statements about his mistake and turn him into a tragic figure who sees he needs redemption. Just evoking some themes form his "Lethal Weapon" character would wash it over nicely.
This would be an excellent publicity opportunity if not for the racist remarks. The only thing the American public likes better than a fallen zealot, is an underdog fighting to make a comeback.
And even with the dubious choice of source material for "The Passion" (Based on the delusion ravings of an illiterate French Nun as transcribed by a Priest of dubious reliability) he wasn't in that far with the PC crowd over charges of racism. Sadly for his career, he was in just far enough in that dog house for this to get people saying "Look! I think it does. Often when you're drunk you think of the worst thing you can say in the current situation and say it because you think it is funny, whether or not your necessarily believe it.
