- AlbionEikon, on 04/03/2009, -2/+43"Hi, Octomom? This is Madonna..."
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+39And i should give a crap because?
- one1plus1one, on 04/03/2009, -8/+40Wow. I hate to be the one who has to explain to her on her 18th birthday that instead of growing up in an orphanage and feeling lucky to get a job as a subservient secretary for the rest of her life, she could have been adopted by Madonna instead, and given access to all her resources.
I'm sure that will go over well. I'm really sure she will feel that the courts made a wise decision in her best interest!
PS: In this case, the courts are not making this decision in the best interest of the child. Rather they are making this decision in the best interest of their public image on the international stage. They don't want to be seen as being subservient to powerful celebrities.
PPS: Having said that... Madonna is a little bit weird. For example she wrote children's books and only allowed her children to read those books in particular. Other books were not allowed. She did this because she obsessively wants to control everything her children are exposed to. That's ironic given that at least 2 generations of parents tried to control their children's exposure to Madonna. Madonna "corrupted" everyone else's children but she wants her own children to be unrealistically "pure".
PPPS: Since Madonna only lets her children read books authored by Madonna herself, does this mean that she will let them read her "sex book"! - stevensj2, on 04/03/2009, -8/+37Good.
Celebrities need to learn that African & Asian children are not handbags or fashion accessories.
Adopting a child is great and should be done more often, for the right reasons. But its become a fad, and that isn't the right reason.
(And no - celebrities adopting kids from 3rd-world countries is not "improving the situation." Children in those regions are being born faster than Angelina and Madonna can collect them. They're doing this for themselves and their public image, nothing more.) - bsuitcase, on 04/03/2009, -2/+31As someone who lives in Southern Africa, I agree with the court's decision. The West constantly cries out for rule of law in Africa except when it works against their interests. The law states that the adopting person must be resident in the region for 18 months prior to the adoption, Madona does not meet the criteria and therefore should not be allowed to adopt. Adopting one child does nothing to assist the millions living in abject poverty and as someone in the article stated, Malawian children would be better served by Madona using her large financial resources to support local orphanages or by using her fame to bring attention to the plight of orphans all over the world.
- GiveMeFreedom, on 04/03/2009, -1/+27I've never understood why celebrities have to go half way around the globe to adopt a child. There are plenty of children in the US that need homes.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+21If thye have a law that people should live in the country before adopting there, why should she be an exception?
- AlbionEikon, on 04/03/2009, -2/+20Whoa. Your statement seems to over simplify the situation. Being a celebrity does not mean she is best able to care for this child. Madonna may be able to provide better financial care but the issue is much more complex.
- Shaggy3, on 04/03/2009, -8/+23She is getting a lot of ***** for this, but seriously, the kid is living in an orphanage in ***** Malawi. Absolutely no future.
- jdames1980, on 04/03/2009, -5/+20Sorry bitch.
- salinungatha, on 04/03/2009, -2/+16Interesting to see Malawi showing the west a lesson in respecting the rule of law.
- hanexar, on 04/03/2009, -4/+18I'm glad to see there's stuff you still can't buy.
- AlbionEikon, on 04/03/2009, -0/+13You think Octomom wouldn't be open to discussing a "business deal" with Madonna for the right price? Given her track record thus far, I'm not so sure.
- Richaod, on 04/03/2009, -2/+14For those saying that Madonna use her fame to raise awareness of the Malawian cause, let's see what she's done:
1. Founded the Raising Malawi organization specifically to deal with the poverty issues Malawian orphans face.
2. Travelling there to fund and assist in the building of an orphanage.
3. Raising awareness specifically by attempting to adopt twice - let's face it; the type of people who read tabloids and gossip magazines probably hadn't even HEARD of Malawi, but they do know who Madonna is.
4. Filmed a full-length documentary about the situation orphans face in Malawi, which was uploaded in its entirety to YouTube and Hulu last week for free viewing.
None of those smell of tokenism or self-benefit to me. If she's doing this for self-promotion, she hardly needed to go to all that trouble.
I think it's fair - and Madonna probably would too - that she has to follow the local law applying to adoptions, though I find it odd that the courts made an exception for David Banda, but not the second time around. I can't say whether or not I approve of the law itself, but it certainly makes sense.
By the way, her entire motivation for adopting again was because it was suggested that David Banda should have a "Malawian brother or sister". Yes, that's because he feels isolated from his home country, but his own father, who refused financial aid preferring adoption, agrees that would be preferable to him being unable to provide for his child, or growing up in an orphaange.
Know the facts: don't automatically side with biased, one-sided tabloid portrayals of celebrities. You don't have to like her, but Madonna is an intelligent person who knows what she's doing, has already raised perfectly well-adjusted children, and most likely is more informed about Malawi than you are. - purplesun2, on 04/03/2009, -1/+11I always assumed it was because of the complications that might come with the chance of having money-grubbing birth parents in the US.
- brownsin07, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10She can adopt me I'll even where the red bracelet.
- TwwIX, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9lol these Celebrities are adopting these kids like they are puppies.
- Daedalus81, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10Then she is perfectly able to adopt as many children from this country as she wants.
- mrogi, on 04/03/2009, -1/+9Madonna did not lose a gattdam thing. The only loser is the 3 year old Malawi girl who could have lived the rest of her life in magnificent luxury & splendor. Instead, she is condemned to a disease infected, poverty stricken existence in a Malawi rathole village. She will be lucky to survive to adulthood.
- cybershoplifter, on 04/03/2009, -3/+10I'm not a huge M fan but it seems she visited this AIDS ridden country a few years ago and seems to want to help in as many ways as she can. It's so very easy to be critical.. but harder to realize she seems (at least to me) that she has a lot of compassion for those less fortunate. Honestly, I never thought I would say that about the material girl.
- OwdenBowden, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Seriously - who gives a *****. ***** her and the rest of the celebrity's who feel that they are G-ds ***** gift to the universes.
I got an Idea MaDonut - How about you (and some of your celebrity *****) adopt a few family's from New Orleans that got crush in Katrina and help them out? Or maybe even give some help to the family's of our Armed forces who are struggling here at home?
What say I? - ventralnet, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7They better not let the kid know when he gets older or he'll probably off himself
- Samueul, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6No offense to Malawi, but do we not have like a bazillion orphaned children in the US who could use a family? Why must these celebs always pull children from other countries? Is it fashionable to have a child in your family that is "unique".???
- d0nkeym0nkey, on 04/03/2009, -7/+13Lucky kid.
- stk198323, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7She wants t ocontrol what they come in contact with to make sure that kiddy doesn't see momma dance like a slut on stage!
- Brandynp, on 04/03/2009, -3/+8Riveting story, thank you BBC for bringing this to our attention.
I can sleep better tonight knowing Geriatric Pop Star Madonna can't adopt. - jaytek13, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6She's also done a very informative documentary on the situation in Malawi called "I am because we are". You can say all you want about Madonna, but if it weren't for her, most people wouldn't even know a country called Malawi existed.
The comments in this thread towards her just show the average Diggers lack of maturity. Cheering that Madonna wasn't able to adopt a child that will now grow up with no family, live in poverty, and have a severe lack of access to food and clean water for the rest of it's life is... well, I guess it's kind of disgusting. - austroLogi, on 04/03/2009, -2/+7just adopt a american, plenty of downtrodden kids here...
oh wait, not as much media attention for that. - chuckDontSurf, on 04/03/2009, -2/+7@Dodey23: He's asking why this is considered news. A kid in his situation would have a better life with just about any middle class American. Why should we give a ***** about this just because it's Madonna doing the adopting?
- Richaod, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6Simple answer:
1. Because orphans in the US aren't in such poverty that it might threaten their survival.
2. There are one million orphaned children in Malawi. Which I'm sure is more than the number in the US, unless it actually is a "bazillion".
3. Madonna lives in the UK. :P
(read my other post for the more complex answer) - tokabowla, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Yeah, the simple life of growing up in a third-world orphanage.
Are you ***** retarded? How can they live in a cocoon & then get exposed to paparazzi? I'd take the "problems" of growing up rich & famous over eating gruel 3 times a day for 18 years then getting thrown out with nothing any day. - linagee, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6(existing_guilt - third_world_children_care) = less guilt
(existing_guilt - poor_US_child_care) = more guilt left than above
It's simple math. She's able to feel less guilty about herself by helping a third world child, even if it is a random kid. - ifruit, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6Well said Sir.
- wolfing, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4I appreciate what she's doing and all, but, wouldn't it be simpler to adopt a kid here in the US? I'm sure we have plenty of children in need here too
- Solkre, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4If Octomom was going to put any of them up for adoption they would have been taken by now. I think she actually wants to raise them all.
- Coffeedemon, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Thread winner.
- ketedford, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Ummm, isn't Madonna like... a virgin?
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -3/+6She is a child trafficker - nuts to her.
- PopcornDave, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3But what if she wants to breast feed? Are you ready to take all that dust in?
- Claude1971, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5why doesn't she adopt an American child? There are alot of poor American children in the system that could use a good home. Why do these celebrites always go to foreign countries to adopt? Because it makes them look more like humanitarians? They should help their own first
- chanop, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5Now she'll have to get a dog for a pet like the rest of us
- warriorscot, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4She has enough money to buy the orphanage and pay for all the kids to be properly educated. Why she feels the need to adopt one of them I have no idea it is a little pathetic.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4Parenting is more than procreating. Idiot.
- imsocool123, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3The fact she invested so much in helping orphans in Malawi is a good reason to make an exception for her adopting this kid.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3in what world would a child only read about 20 or so books in her childhood?!
I highly doubt she only lets her kids read her books. lol. There's only about 10 of them. - PopcornDave, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3So why doesn't she put her ***** money in to the orphanage to help ALL the kids that are there instead of just cherry picking another little black kid to soothe her conscience?
- AndersenWatcher, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4The fact that Diggers are so intelligent, yet have no grasp of sarcasm, is just one of those web anomalies that I'm just going to have to live with.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -3/+5Don't make the God of Kabala angry
Give Madonna a baby NOW!!! - walgman, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3Nobody tell the kid in later life when she is dieing of AIDS in poverty.
- Buelldozer, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3I have no idea what you're talking about. "The West" lives by rule of law every day, despite what you read on Digg. Thousands of court cases are decided by the rule of law every day in the United States.
There's no moral lesson in a Judge deciding to follow the laws of his own country and deny Madonna an adoption. -
