- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -17/+63same, but im not kidding. I hated that movie. I never understood what made it so popular. maybe its because im male...
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48I don't understand all the negativity and hate around Titanic. I think it's purely backlash against a film that was really big. Technically it was an amazing achievement. It also wasn't a bad story. Yes, I got sick of all the hype around it too, but that doesn't turn it into a bad movie - just one that you don't want to hear about any more. What made Leo want to "quit" was not the film itself, it was his objectification afterwards by viewers.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Don't forget The Aviator. That's in my Top 5 all-time. Great movie.
Another one is The Departed. That's mind-blowing.
He's a great actor. It would suck if he did quit so early in his career. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Blood Diamond, The Departed, The Aviator...and even Gangs of New York...all flawless movies under his wing, that's a good lineup if you ask me.
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -15/+44@zediker:
Don't you know? The movie was marketed as a popular suspense thriller. I mean, who knew the boat sank at the end? - datagod, on 10/12/2007, -10/+38Titanic wanted to make me gouge my eyes out and burst my eardrums.
/kidding.... - hinkbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21His best work was playing Luke in Growing Pains.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20After seeing "Blood Diamond", my view of him as a lame heartthrob actor has totally been shattered..
He just needed to be given a bit of time to mature as an actor and as a person... - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Perhaps the movie was so highly regarded because it was an excelent piece of cinematography? The acting was top-notch, the set/characters were believable, the plot was excellent (regardless of how we all know the outcome) and it was an overall touching movie. It had a degree of polish you rarely see even these days.
I'm a straight 23 year old male - just because you might not like drama doesn't stop the movie from being excellent all-round. I admit it was a VERY over-hyped movie (and probably why some people thought it should be more than it was) but still an excellent movie. - ml7667, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Catch Me if You Can changed my view on him. He is a great actor.
- northerncomfort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I agree. Blood Diamond was incredible, and he was near-perfect. I also thought he was excellent in his younger roles- Basketball Diaries and What's Eating Gilbert Grape come to mind.
A very talented actor who cashed in on a big one to become a huge name. My hat's off to him- even if he wanted to quit, it was a good move in the long run. - DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13See, 'The Beach' did it for me. I love that flick.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You can't blame him for Titanic, I mean if your an actor you're getting paid big bucks for that right? Bad spot light sure, but then he did The Beach which wasn't too bad, had some crazy stuff in it. The Aviator wasn't too bad either.
- infimprob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He was a grown actor a great deal before Titanic.
- Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"I'm told I didn't miss anything."
Well... there was this one part with Kate Winslett with no clothes on, but other than that,
you didn't miss a thing! - raynar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"I never understood what made it so popular. maybe its because im male..."
Big ol titties. - benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7yah, i didn't see that one but The Departed had the same effect on me. I misjudged him. He is very talented.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Check him out in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, years before Titanic and definitely not a heartthrob part. (damn my timing)
- kaplanfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If anyone doubts Leo's acting capability, go back and watch an older film called "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". The movie is a great one, starting another good actor (Johnny Depp). I had never seen DiCaprio before, and in the film he plays a mentally handicapped young man. I was pretty convinced that the actual actor must have been mentally challenged, as the performance seemed to real to be acting. Check it out though, besides the great acting, it's a good movie.
-Kap - NeoMatrixJR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No but the audience made me wanna kill myself...seriously...I left the movie and two valley girls (yes, there's a valley high school near where I lived) left saying they didn't know the boat would sink!
IF YOUR A HISTORY TEACHER @ VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL IN DES MOINES, IA...YOU SUCK!!!! - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9'Titanic' was good for one reason - watching a gigantic ship sink. If they'd have dispensed with that awful side plot, I would have watched it a million times.
- Devoboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Are you sure you didn't like Titanic?
- yellowsnowcone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, his first films are among his best. This Boy's Life was amazing and so was What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He's truly one of the great actors of our generation, the Titanic not withstanding.
- InferiorWang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I'll never let go...now get off my door."
- MODAT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well im glad he came back to act. "The Departed" was an awesome movie and he fit the role perfectly.
- Coy0te, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's interesting, Titanic made me want to quit living.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you're only remembered as a teen heartthrob your whole life, you'll be typecast, not be able to get gigs when you're an adult, and die penniless (if you don't change careers).
It serves you well to be a hearthrob when you're a teen, but when Titanic came out, he was an adult, and was ready for adult roles. - adidos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think he was also amazing in Romeo and Juliet.
Even as a guy, I can say that is an awesome movie...
Also The Beach, Catch Me If You Can, etc...All great performances by him. I still have to see The Departed and The Aviator but I've heard great things about him in both of those as well. - kmb1794, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Titanic is a good movie. You guys just don't like it because Jessica Alba wasn't in it.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ten years ago, if you told me Leonardo DiCaprio would be in Scorcese films, be up for best actor in a brutal mob film, etc., I would not believe you. Today, I'm rooting for him for best supporting actor.
- unicornhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He'll be around for a long time. 'The Aviator' was great. He played Howard Hughes..who slipped into the depths of severe OCD.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree with this. While I honestly liked Titanic, despite its flaws, I think the best decision he made was to literally disappear for a while. In that time, he matured, and his 'comeback' was starring in two success films by Scorsese and Spielberg.... Not a bad thing to have on a resume.
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I first saw Leonardo in Gilbert Grape. My reaction was "Wow, they got that retarded kid to do a pretty good job!"
Leo is a very skilled actor, who got caught in the role of teen idol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_Grape - frunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A while ago, I wondered how Titanic made so much money. Then I realized, it came out when I was in 8th grade, and girls in my school talked about how they saw it 7-8 times. I think that's how it made more money than say, Lord of the Rings, etc.
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nope. It was the 13-year-olds that were allowed to see the movie, and Kate Winslet's chest.
- Hush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't find him attractive either.
He was good in Gilbert Grape though, don't you think? That's the mark of a good actor, in my opinion, one who can pull off the role of a mentally challenged person.
Billy Bob and Sean Penn come to mind in those roles. - mikesly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe they should have given the role to Ben Affleck so he finally quits...
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can always filter out the "celebrity" section, you know.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4He's got talent and wanted to be known for it! Why don't you stop hating on him for having ambition, drive and talent, heck maybe this is the year you'll get promoted to floor manager of said factory.
- arial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where's Arnie? Anyone remember "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" also another great performance by DiCaprio.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very true. He is like Depp, Denzel & Will Smith in that sense.
That's as opposed to some who whore themselves out to every opportunity or a few particularly bad ones. Ben Affleck comes to mind there. That sort of this RUINED his career and any sort of credibility for him. Whereas the ones I named above are highly regarded by the great majority of people. - raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey I watched the film again recently and I i liked it: Its classical big budget Hollywood, no, it is no Kubrick, it is more of a producer's masterpiece. It has drama, good looking actors, incredible special effects, very nice cinematography and even a little depth which manage to keep the suspense all the way even though the viewer knows the story beforehand. It's a good flic for its purpose.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3titanic would've been a great movie without Hollywood's love-triangle formula *****. They ***** up Pearl Harbor with the same formula nonsense. They want to get the extra 30 per cent revenue off of the chick demographic, no matter what the story line is, so, if its a "man movie" they add a love triangle and it becomes a historical-chick-flick.
Hollywood hasn't made a decent movie in 40 years. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dicaprio is an excellent actor. he wasn't afraid to play difficult roles and be good at it - even played a gay early on - when others are in their 50s never trying anything other than their 'standard' role.
too bad titanic made some idiots connect him with cheapness. - Miles314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I misread the title and said to myself, "Leo likes to quilt?"
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wonder if it really was him that gave Titanic a freakin $1.8 BILLION box-office
http://imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide - sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Titanic sucked so bad and for years after that it ruined my opinion of him as an actor but recently I saw "Catch Me if You Can" and "The Aviator" and now I see that he really is a great actor.
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're an idiot. Next time, when talking about other people being incoherent talking heads, maybe you should read over your post before clicking that little submit button.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, if they tracked it.. I'm sure Titanic would rank #1 for repeat movie attendees.
There is cult favorites like Star Wars, Harry Potter and LOTR that get a lot of repeat business, but Titanic had every female in the world wanting to go see it 10 times and it seems like most of them came close to that mark. -
