- reuscel, on 01/29/2008, -9/+29Thank God this is fiction. This could never happen in America.
- ibeetle, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12Diebold is full of *****.
You know what Diebold makes? Cash registers and ATM's.
When you buy something at a store, and the sales associate hands you a receipt; you know that that receipt is? A paper trail. With the turn of a key and a push of a button someone can get a print out of every sale made on that register. A paper trail so detailed that department stores relies on its accuracy to keep track of millions of dollars in sales and inventory.
The Diebold ATM has a paper trail so exacting, and reliable that it has been used to capture, and prosecute criminals. An ATM paper trail is routinely used as admissible evidence in courts.
What else do they have in common? In this new modern age of computers and networks these cash registers and ATM's are on a network. How often do you hear of that network being unknowing corrupted or compromised? Never. Networks are compromised, but that break in security does not go unnoticed. Alarms do sound. People are caught.
So when Dibold says they cannot make a reliable, un-hackable, with detailed paper trail e-voting machine; I say *****... or at least hand it over to their cash register department. - jeremyduffy, on 01/29/2008, -6/+15There must be a lot of Diebold employees on digg. Every comment attacking e-voting has been dug down even though e-voting in it's current form has been proven again and again by many reliable sources to be easy to hack and have little to no accountability for the votes. Maryland just passed a resolution abandoning their e-voting initiative that they already spent over $100 million on because of these problems.
- N3tw0rk, on 01/29/2008, -3/+10There has been well documented evidence of voter suppression in the 2004 presidential election. You don't need a poll to show that an election can be rigged to some degree. Educate yourself and watch a documentary called Uncounted.

Also check out Hacking Democracy, which shows how voting machines can be hacked.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4463776866 ... - mrsark, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6is this about a small town lawyer taking on a large multinational?
- sruffelman, on 01/29/2008, -6/+11I just hope that it doesn't perpetuate another one of these huge conspiracy theories that Digg seems to be so fond of.
- wc3452, on 01/29/2008, -1/+4I'm glad he's back to writing legal thrillers. He's written a couple books about football, neither of which were as fun to read than his legal thrillers.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -7/+10Don't kid yourself, Americans don't "mostly agree" any election was "rigged". Find me a poll that shows that.
It's a small faction of the far left community that happens to be overrepresented on digg.com that believes ***** like that. - Kenzan, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3My next book will also be about Election Fraud;
It'll be an American History Book. - edebolt, on 01/29/2008, -3/+7what is a book? Diggers don't even read the article much less a book.
- TheCash, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3They are just a vocal minority, like the 9/11 truthers and Ron Paul supporters. Only people from other countries would waste their energy worrying about America instead of their own homes.
- gidd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Ah, John Grisham... master of the Microsoft Word Mail Merge function.
- NecroSexy, on 01/29/2008, -1/+3msaleem, go ***** yourself. Buried.
- scott88008, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2It's available in audio format. I get through 2-3 books a week that way, mostly from Audible.com or iTunes (I've already cleaned out my local library"s audio book section).
- adooga, on 01/29/2008, -3/+5Dan, N3tw0rk just gave you two links and you refuse to even look? So much for "show me evidence". So much for "the facts as I see them". What you really mean is "I've made up my mind what the truth is and anything that might vary from that I'll ignore. LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA."
Now this is where you say "That doesn't count as evidence because it's left wing crap. I haven't seen them but they must be left wing crap or they wouldn't differ from what I believe. And anyway, digg is just a hotbed of leftists, communists and terrorist sympathizers and I can't wait until you're all in gitmo where you belong." - Stevanoski, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2Remember, it was the Democrat activist like you who wanted to keep the military votes out. And what is the deal with the word "activist" you seem enamored with it as you use it in every comment you make.
- proliance, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I say we rig elections the old fashioned way: register dead people, give voting rights to illegals by handing out voter registration cards with drivers licenses, allow felons to vote, and never ask someone for ID. Its just not glamorous enough for a book.
- kevlarbaboon, on 01/29/2008, -4/+6No, he meant a small faction of the far left community that happens to be overrepresented on digg.com that believes *****.
- mcquitty, on 01/29/2008, -1/+3Now, while I agree that hacking a voting booth shouldn't be possible, you have missed a point. Demonstration of a capability doesn't mean it has been done.
I can demonstrate how to create a nuclear device and target a city. Doesn't mean that I have done it.
Capability does not equate to it ever being done. - inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2John Grisham bores me.
- BobertBert, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Not a conspiracy nut, just watched Matt Lauer interview him
"When Lauer asked if such a story was far-fetched, Grisham said, "it's already happened."
"It happened a few years ago in West Virginia. A guy owned a coal company. He got tired of getting sued. He elected his guy to the Supreme Court. It switched 5-4 back his way and he didn't worry about getting sued.""
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22897288/ - silvanov2002, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Dugg, because I've never read a Grisham novel I didnt enjoy.
- Harbinger67, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1There's no better way to raise public awareness about an issue than to put it in a story and cause everyone to discount the idea as "just fiction".
- lekahe, on 01/29/2008, -9/+10This book is a must!
- TheCash, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2Uh... there have been lots of books in the past about election fraud. You seriously had to wait for Grisham to pen one before you took notice?
if you prefer to be cheap, just google "dead people voting" for all kinds of fun stories, like the 8000 dead people who are still registered voters in the state of New York. - TheCash, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Not since The Client. That was the last decent Grisham book.
- BobertBert, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2the Massey Energy and Harman Mining dispute from West Virginia
- kris33, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1It is not fact nor fiction
- mal1964, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Oh it will, Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat, doesn't get a free pass .
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1And just for your information, the algorithm was changed so the 'elite' users wouldn't be the only people getting front page stories. Meanwhile, msaleem and mrbabyman continue to have 2-3 stories on the front page at a time.
- SicSevens, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2John Grisham is still alive?
- heartcoldfusion, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2Maybe for the film adaptation they can go back to the Client days and have the main character played by Brad Renf... nevermind.
- BobertBert, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1This book is based on an actual story that happened in West Virginia. It involved Massey Energy's Don Blankenship, who had a $76 Million Dollar Verdict against it in West Virginia. Well Don, while the case was on appeal spearheaded an effort to infuse $3.5 Million dollars into the campaign of Brent Benjamin for the Supreme Court. Well Benjamin wins the election, and when the appeal is heard, Benjamin sides w/ Massey, and the verdict is overturned 5-4.
Well that's not all. . . Justice "Spike" Maynard, while the case was on appeal, vacationed in Monaco with Don Blankenship, and never disclosed this fact to the court, nor to the parties. He also voted in Massey's favor, with Benjamin, making up part of that 5-4 Massey verdict. He only recently recused himself, after pictures of his vacation were filed in a brief by Capteron's Harman Mining (the original winner).
Here's a Wall Street Journal Law Blog post on the issue http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2008/01/28/more-recusal-r ...
Here are some other relevant quotes, with the first one from the Today Show with Matt Lauer, Jan 29, 2008.
(1)"When Lauer asked if such a story was far-fetched, Grisham said, "it's already happened."
"It happened a few years ago in West Virginia. A guy owned a coal company. He got tired of getting sued. He elected his guy to the Supreme Court. It switched 5-4 back his way and he didn't worry about getting sued.""
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22897288/
(2) Here's another one:
"The real-life analogy to Grisham's book: a case in my home state of West Virginia. There, in 2002, Massey Energy, the largest coal producer in Appalachia, lost a $50 million verdict in the local courts. As in Grisham's fiction, the five-member Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia was severely divided. And before Massey's appeal reached the state's highest court, the 2004 judicial election would pit a "liberal" incumbent against an unknown corporate lawyer who had never argued a case before the court." - ELLIS1128, on 01/29/2008, -4/+4Can't wait, Grisham's books are always so engaging and enjoyable.
- guyinjapan, on 01/29/2008, -2/+2Dugg for mentioning the word "conspiracy"
- NJank, on 01/29/2008, -2/+2I'd be happier if Michael Crichton did it. Enough science to make 98% of the population go "oh *****, that sounds real" while allowing the rest of us to see it for what it is and go "thank god that couldn't really happen"
- FnordBob, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0Neal Stephenson (writing as "Stephen Bury") wrote a book about rigging elections called "The Interface". I just finished it...not bad. Not his best by any stretch, but definitely interesting.
- 1337Einstein, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Wow, what a pointless comment. Just for future reference, the term "algorithm" usually implies an equation more complex than "x#diggs=frontpage"
- ytsrc, on 02/28/2008, -0/+0well, as usual, it was predicted. sammie produced voumes of documentation regarding the fraud that the republicans pulled off in 2004 and in spite of jay whitlow and his advertisements sammie's work was wholly ignored. now, maybe mr. grisham will get the ball rolling and something can be done before the 2004 travesty (as documented by sammie and advertised by jay whitlow) is repreated.
- lol24, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Way to be on the ball digg...
- SallyValleyx, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1HUGE fan of John Grisham, his books have sucked me in. This book sounds intriguing, I am getting a copy tonight! Hopefully I will find time to start reading it, because once I start, I will probably be glued.
- TheCash, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Only if you're a conspiracy nut.
- BobertBert, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0It is loosely based on Massey Energy's Don Blankenship
- ithejosh, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Ron Paul
- mcquitty, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0I wonder how many people will claim how this work is well researched and is a blueprint for stealing elections and yet say "State of Fear" is a complete fabrication and the data is completely flawed?
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -3/+3Allegations that have no obvious basis in fact and have no evidence backing them up don't merit looking at. You can say all you want, but if you can't prove it, it's worthless.
- mcquitty, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0My apologies. I was thinking he wrote State of Fear, when it was Michael Crichton.
Excuse me while I pull my head out of the sand. - masturbator, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0I hope so too as we all know that this is just a work of fiction and couldn't possibly happen in real life (nervous laughter).
- TheCash, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1The supreme court hasn't intervened in any recent elections... the hell are you talking about?
- lacolonel, on 01/29/2008, -7/+6it's about time! Hopefully this novel will be fact based fiction, a la The Shell Game by Steve Alten.
