John Cusack Aims To Offend With War Satire Film
news.yahoo.com — John Cusack is outraged over the Iraq war, so the U.S. actor channeled his anger into a low-budget political satire -- complete with a chorus line of scantily clad female amputees -- that he hopes will offend.

- LukasSmith, on 05/02/2008, -7/+4Cusack is a hippie. ***** hippies.
- jaznova, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1Yeah that bastard hates our troops because this film may make profit$
/s - haydesigner, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3"Cusack is a hippie. ***** hippies."
I honestly do not understand the veracity of either statement.
- jaznova, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1Yeah that bastard hates our troops because this film may make profit$
- tyho, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2I'm sure it will be a great success, at least in offending people. None of the pro/anti-war films have made ***** as of yet. Not even covering the costs of production. I don't go to my doctor for advise on computers, why don't actors realize we don't look to them for political opinion. They don't even live in the "real" world.
- LukasSmith, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2Yeah like all those music stars going to saving the planet concerts riding in private jets.

- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -35/+21FTA:Cusack said he was also inspired by the late director Robert Altman, who made a satirical movie about U.S. medical personnel during the Korean War, based on the book "MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors."
"He said when he made "MASH" he wanted to be as politically incorrect as the war was obscene," Cusack said. "I don't think we even went far enough."
John Cusack does know that MASH was released in 1970, 17 years after the Korean war ended, right? Oh forget it.- unoriginl, on 05/02/2008, -10/+36BohicaTwentyTwo does know that the Vietnam war lasted until 1975, right?

- EIderofzion, on 05/02/2008, -12/+7Maybe you should read his comment,,,
- Balanced, on 05/02/2008, -6/+38MASH used the Korean war as a proxy for the Vietnam war.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -8/+7I wonder why they did that? I'm sure there was a good reason.
- warriorscot, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4Maybe because it was a statement against war and setting it in vietnamn while provocative enough to get the message across might hit just a little to close to home at the time, and its easier to shoot a TV series that isn't set in an environment nothing like where you can shoot it.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5"setting it in vietnamn while provocative enough to get the message across might hit just a little to close to home at the time"
There's a fine line between satire and insult. Altman understood this, Cusack doesn't. - jaznova, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3@Bohica22
"I think the movie should be kind of offensive," Cusack told Reuters about the film....."This allows you to actually feel like, 'Let's do something subversive."'
He doesn't understand the fine line between satire and insult? Even if that were true, it doesn't appear that edging close to that line is his intent. - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3So he does know the difference between satire and insult and is going more for insult than satire. Basically he's intentionally making a bad movie just to insult Chimpy ***** and Darth HalliburtoCheney.
- jaznova, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1You're getting warmer, but no cigar.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5"setting it in vietnamn while provocative enough to get the message across might hit just a little to close to home at the time"
- dbs1221, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Because the Novel that inspired it took place in Korea.

- HanSolo69, on 05/02/2008, -6/+4If he waited until the current war was over he'd have to hope that somebody 100 years in the future would still be interested in distributing his film.
- history1me, on 05/02/2008, -1/+18Technically, the Korean war never ended. It's still going on.
- MWeather, on 05/02/2008, -5/+5Technically, it never started.
- Laughsatyou, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2technically? tell that to the millions of dead koreans, chinese, and thousands of US soldiers.
- MWeather, on 05/02/2008, -5/+5Technically, it never started.
- mlvassallo, on 05/02/2008, -2/+12MASH the Book was about Korea. MASH the movie and TV show- while set in Korea, was a direct commentary on Vietnam. Subversive being the operative word.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -13/+7And this is why Altman will be remembered as a good director and Cusack will be remembered as another America-hating Hollywood hack.
- haydesigner, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1Yeah.

- VinceNoir, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1I'll only say this: laissez faire. That's not a good international policy. On the other hand, I don't support the travesty we started in Iraq either. We need to be involved, not as war makers, but as peace makers.
- MWeather, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1I think you're confusing non-intervention and xenophobia.
- acdcfanbill, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2Yea, lousy libertarian, I mean, if there is one thing the world needs, it's less personal liberty.

- EIderofzion, on 05/02/2008, -29/+12If he really wanted to offend people and get a reaction he'd make one supporting the war effort, and supporting how the US is trying to promote a secular and civilized federation in Iraq, imagine sitting on all that Oil and people can't even sell Falafels without getting machine gunned or blown to *****.
I mean how many movies have come out against the war and portays US soldiers as rapists?
I mean how many movies have blamed everying on the "secret" "Government" plans- DangerMouse9, on 05/02/2008, -7/+17Would you be willing to die so someone that's already insanely rich could get richer, as our government is asking the soldiers to do?
I don't believe for a second that we are genuinely there to free the Iraqi people. We wouldn't give a flying ***** about them if they didn't have something our country wanted, and I'd believe that Jesus Christ himself would rise out of the steaming pile of ***** I just left with a big sombrero and a pet Komodo dragon that burped lollipops before I believed our government genuinely cared about the Iraqi people.
If you want to see ***** promoting the war in a positive light go watch Fox News.- Cyberdactyl, on 05/02/2008, -12/+8Yea, let's make a mockery of the amputees coming back from Iraq. Sounds about right for the left who could care less who dies from terrorists or is severely injured till it touches THEIR life directly.
- SpencerMc, on 05/02/2008, -6/+2You know who you haven't seen in a while? Good ol' The Point. You should call him up and tell him you miss him.
- warriorscot, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4There werent any terrorists in Iraq, far from it Saddam was vehemently against them, allot of the people he killed and tortured were the same people that were also against the US interests. Afghanistan was the only thing that could even be loosely justified as the regime of the time directly supported terrorism.
Its every citizens right to have a say on what their money and their soldiers are used for, the line goes "For the people, by the people" its not mocking amputees its mocking the people who made them amputees. Its asking questions about why? And its a valid question if the US wanted to protect itself from terrorism it followed a path that wasn't the one recommended or even intelligent that is why people ask the questions and why they demand answers. Its not a partisan issue, its not a left wing issue it is a democratic issue.

- ghuytro, on 05/02/2008, -3/+6It's kind of sad how concepts like "patriotism" or "democracy" or even "liberalism" have morphed an distorted to mean unwavering and unquestioning support of a government's policies with an opinion absent of individuality, conscience or free-will.
Sprinkle your politics with a good dose of Christian fundamentalism for medicinal purposes to help people deal with the human and social cost of egregious government policies.
Wrap your politicians in costumes of templated morality and righteousness and you've got yourself a nice recipe for inculcating whole generations of sheep who for years if not generations will let the corpocracy get away with pretty much anything.
"Would you like another spoonful of ***** Jimmy?"
"Mmmm, please sir, can I have some more?"- 15thPD, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Quite possibly the dumbest comment I've ever read.

- Wargalas, on 05/02/2008, -7/+13To offend simply to offend isn't good enough. It'll bomb just like every other anti-Iraq/anti-American movie put out lately by Hollywood. It has to have a good story, be funny, or be good. Otherwise it's still garbage.

- FredFredrickson, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1Good to know that so many open-minded Americans out there will simply place you "in the dustbin" for disagreeing with your stance on a useless war.
- evil-doer, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1wut?
- ender7074, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2Its precisely what liberals do with any conservative opinion. Guess its ok when that happens though right?

- isaactwito, on 05/02/2008, -7/+8Even if the world doesn't need _another_ John Cusack playing a hit-man movie, a movie that will offend and create dialogue over this idiotic war is just what the world needs.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1And why the ***** wouldn't they? John Cusack is the man and Gross Pointe Blank is still one of my favorite movies.
- TheCash, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1I'm gonna watch this movie, but I couldn't give a crap how offensive he intended it to be
- fleischner, on 05/02/2008, -11/+14Yeah, great idea, because of the stunning success and packed theaters the constant stream of anti-Iraq-war movies the morons keep making (Redacted, Rendition, Lions for Lambs, In the Valley of Elah, etc. etc. etc.). It's really what we Americans are thirsting for.
- chantron, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Rendition wasn't so much of an anti-iraq movie as it was an anti-torture movie.
I won't see those movies but I will see this new Cusack film. Satire, in my opinion, is always much better at getting points across than cheesy ass dramas. - leexy, on 05/02/2008, -4/+4Those movies failed because they were bad, not because of their political message.
- ender7074, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2Exactly. And the fact that the majority of Americans despise what the media is trying to do to our troops.
- chantron, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Rendition wasn't so much of an anti-iraq movie as it was an anti-torture movie.
- JargonScott, on 05/02/2008, -12/+7Why do creative people that are B side types feel the need to shove controversy into their art? (Other than it being a "hey, I need to cash in on this.")
"The world will never understand the injustices and hypocrisies of the world, not unless I do an interpretive dance or maybe make a macaroni statue of Jesus full of strife."- ArachnidDude, on 05/02/2008, -2/+3Yeah, I'm going to see roger waters in houston this weekend. I'm a huge fan, but you know he flew that inflatable pig in California with OBAMA on it's belly, and a check mark next to it. You know, I suppose it's ok to spout off a little if you have the stage. But what the hell is a british musician thinking by promoting a US presidential candidate? I mean, what the hell? Cusack, on the other hand, is just trying to get attention by being controversial.
- Xalorous, on 05/02/2008, -2/+5Actually, the ones who get involved in causes, whether they be A list or not, typically do so because they want to make the world a better place. I may or may not agree with their politics, but I appreciate their willingness to stand for something.
Have you done anything today to make the world a better place?- Griberal, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1I've done something today that has made the world a better place. I didn't make a ***** movie that emboldens the people that we're fighting against in Iraq.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2You know, in this complex world of ours, you can make a negative statement about something without it being a positive statement for the opposition, right?
Don't be so simple minded. - Griberal, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1@ FredFredrickson
It's one thing to make a negative statement, but it's another to make a movie that bashes your country and President in the time of war. I'm sure this movie won't be used against us by our enemies.- FredFredrickson, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2So during a time of war the people lose their voice? The president assumes complete control over the country, and voices from those who disagree with his policies should be silenced?
How could this movie be used against us? The only forces working against us here are the products of our own creation - a tanking economy and an endless war.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2So during a time of war the people lose their voice? The president assumes complete control over the country, and voices from those who disagree with his policies should be silenced?
- FredFredrickson, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2You know, in this complex world of ours, you can make a negative statement about something without it being a positive statement for the opposition, right?
- JargonScott, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Well nothing "today" since I'm at work, but I regularly do plenty of things; donate to food banks and my church, small construction projects for elderly (ramps, railings, etc) participate in MS walks/sponsorship. So what do you do?
The money he wasted making this movie could better serve people if that's his real goal. Even if it only cost $10 to film, that's enough to feed a family of 4 for a full week using food bank pricing. Since his goal is "hey look I'm still here!!!" then I don't care what what he says in his trite film, it's garbage. Absolutely nothing will come of this film, other than ruffling a few feathers or preaching to the same tired choirs.
- Griberal, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1I've done something today that has made the world a better place. I didn't make a ***** movie that emboldens the people that we're fighting against in Iraq.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1...because they feel passionately about something, and they don't stand to lose the huge A-list career for taking a stand.
- Rayhush, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4Ya, I hate artists, trying to enlighten people through their art. Why can't they just produce another mindless TV show and stop speaking from their heart.... damn hippies!
- nastronomical, on 05/02/2008, -15/+12Give the money to the poor since he is wasting it on that crap.
- jzuska, on 05/02/2008, -14/+17OMG an actor with an opinion on the war. How original.
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/02/2008, -3/+8so you are saying he shouldn't have an opinion.
Nice. - BTime, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1I trust his sources more than the White House propaganda machine
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/02/2008, -3/+8so you are saying he shouldn't have an opinion.
- whitecamarors, on 05/02/2008, -20/+19I like John as an actor but honestly just stick to being actor and not a preacher. kthxbye
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/02/2008, -3/+6So you want all entertainment to be as dumb as the A team?
I pity you fool. - vuzman, on 05/02/2008, -2/+7Actors are allowed to voice their opinion just like everyone else. Even you, though everyone else thinks you're an idiot.
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/02/2008, -3/+6So you want all entertainment to be as dumb as the A team?
- serif69, on 05/02/2008, -19/+14Nothing like an intentionally offensive art piece to show just how ignorant and pretentious you are.
- frepnog, on 05/02/2008, -1/+14I want my 2 dollars.
/obscure? surely not.- vuzman, on 05/02/2008, -0/+123 years ago is obscure to most of Digg...
- frepnog, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1ah, how correct you are, here i am in my latter 30's and so many people on digg are still ideological and think that they can change the world... hehehehe it makes me laugh, like bennett in commando when the little merc is trying to act tough.....
- vuzman, on 05/02/2008, -0/+123 years ago is obscure to most of Digg...
- owenkun, on 05/02/2008, -2/+13"complete with a chorus line of scantily clad female amputee"
I would see a movie that featured this regardless of what its subject was.- Cyberdactyl, on 05/02/2008, -5/+6Not much respect for amputees coming back from Iraq.
But of course that's the last thing on the mind of the far left idiots in Hollywood.- bsmang, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4They're only portraying Bush's respect for the war's casualties.
- ender7074, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2Riiiiight. How many actors do you see going to military hospitals to speak with wounded veterans. Zero. How many pro military movies have come out of Hollywood in the last, oh 50 years. Zero. Hollywood and the left have nothing but disdain for our military people and the prove it every chance they get.
- SanTe, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4What are you talking about? Starship Troopers was gung ho as hell!
- ender7074, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2Riiiiight. How many actors do you see going to military hospitals to speak with wounded veterans. Zero. - fuzed, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1Deja Vu.
- vuzman, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I know you are, but what am I?
- Cyberdactyl, on 05/02/2008, -7/+3With most every film since his stellar 'Ghandi', Ben Kingsley proves his excellent role in that film was a fluke.
I thought he had hit bottom with 'BloodRayne' and 'Sound of Thunder'. Apparently he's gonna prove us all wrong again. - stonebone4, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2That's awesome, but what I want to know is how is he going to work in a shot of himself walking in the rain?
- Bmarofsky, on 05/02/2008, -3/+14Trailer: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0884224/trailers-trail ...
I'd see it.- kazersoza, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Looks good
- ATLBuckeye, on 05/02/2008, -11/+5Once again we have an actor being able to use his platform to express his political ideas. If he had any balls he would run for public office instead of using his acting platform to do nothing but whine and complain.
- geekwithsoul, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2Yeah, what was up with that ***** Ben Franklin -- he never bothered to run for political office either, so any contribution he made was crap, right? And actors who do run for office -- that always turns out so well.
- ender7074, on 05/02/2008, -2/+3Comparing Ben Franklin to John Cusack. Lets see one is an extremely intelligent patriot who put his life on the line with his writings and ideas, the other is a spoiled rotten little whiny rich boy who never served anyone or anything other than himself a day in his life. Yes wonderful comparison idiot.
- geekwithsoul, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2Yeah, what was up with that ***** Ben Franklin -- he never bothered to run for political office either, so any contribution he made was crap, right? And actors who do run for office -- that always turns out so well.
- KCLorelei39, on 05/02/2008, -8/+5"There's hopefully an exuberance to the movie because I think being subversive should feel good," Cusack said. "It should be fun to throw a brick."
tell that to the people throwing bricks in real life wars, that get shot in return for their "fun". There's a big difference between demonstrations at Berkeley, and Iraq, ya knucklehead. - Barbarino, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3PURE SNOW!
- withears, on 05/02/2008, -9/+12I love John Cusack. But he won't offend any of the Bushtards. You have to be able to think to be offended.
- sereth, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1Good point...Even scarier is the thought that the bushtards and mccainiacs will think this is a good idea....
- ender7074, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3Yes and you Obamanations will lick this ***** right up.
- mejusthavin, on 05/02/2008, -8/+6Where the f#ck have these people been? He has millions of dollars and could have made this movie years ago, you know back in 2004 when Bush was up for reelection?
I understand that this will help inform clueless Americans and that's a good thing, but the damage is done right? I love that Hollywood can now cash in on this war too.
All profits should be going to make sure this never happens again.- MWeather, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4"I understand that this will help inform clueless Americans and that's a good thing, but the damage is done right?"
No, we can still leave at any time. - leexy, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4That's a legitimate question. Back in 2004, he would have been called an anti-American unpatriotic terrorist-sympathizer.
Now, it's not as risky. - Owwmykneecap, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1"l profits should be going to make sure this never happens again."
What does that even mean?- mejusthavin, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1yea that was not very clear... i guess I means the profits from this film should be used to programs to kill the military industrial complex.
- MWeather, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4"I understand that this will help inform clueless Americans and that's a good thing, but the damage is done right?"
- Rosco, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4I like his sister, mmmmm
- Jektal, on 05/02/2008, -1/+5"...complete with a chorus line of scantily clad female..."
"...also stars with [some guy], Marisa Tomei..."
Sweeeet. - aserer511, on 05/02/2008, -4/+9is it tasteless? yes.
but this is what makes america so ***** great- he can do this and, unlike in iraq, NOT get killed. - tech9lab, on 05/02/2008, -5/+2VHS? Very Hot Sex = pornos videos
- Kenzan, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4Hillary Duff is in it?
WTF? - vinecrawler, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2come on people, you gotta respect this man. Kevin Spacey is a genius actor.
- jimjacks, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5Anybody see how that Tom Cruise and Robert Redford anti war movie bombed. Then when they released it on DVD they totally changed the pitch of the movie. I will just practice my right, just like I did in with Redford film, and not watch it.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3When you say bomb, do you mean Redacted bomb or StopLoss bomb?
- boo1, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1Try practicing your right to learn proper English.
- BTime, on 05/04/2008, -0/+2Tom Cruise has been unwatchable for years. I didn't even know Redford was still alive.
- bsmang, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5Sweet. I love to offend people who have their noses lodged in Bush's ass, too!
