- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -3/+232I think he's joaquin about the entire rap thing.
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -2/+166Not a hoax. It's true, I've read it on a cinema blog.
- hellraisinazn, on 02/13/2009, -11/+166IS THIS REAL LIFE?!?!
- Link459, on 02/13/2009, -2/+152I applaud him for creating the most confusion I have ever cared about by a celebrity.
- Tyrghast, on 02/13/2009, -2/+109He's still pissed about dying at the end of Gladiator.
- starcasm, on 02/13/2009, -6/+97If this whole "persona" were for real, he's be under a rock somewhere in the wilderness, not trying to be a hippie rapper appearing on Letterman with Casey Affleck's film crew following him around everywhere.
"Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight." - bringmeupmusic, on 02/12/2009, -6/+67But down the line what's the catch, I mean is he trying to prove something about our culture, is there some sort of documentary going on? He's such a talented actor, there has to be something more.
- alanocu, on 02/13/2009, -4/+64Could someone tell Crazy that Matisyahu called and he wants his look back.
- kitsua, on 02/13/2009, -1/+57I predict he'll rise from the ashes.
- knuvue, on 02/13/2009, -0/+39Is it just me or did that blog totally rip digg's thumb icons and avatar styling?
- beemarp, on 02/13/2009, -2/+40LOL...exactly. This article proves nothing.
- rukeypoo, on 02/13/2009, -4/+38AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -7/+40is this just fantas... nah too lazy.
- nullcodes, on 02/13/2009, -2/+33He's actually been the voice of Kanye West all this time.
- junkjunk, on 02/13/2009, -0/+30Same. I actually really like this guy, and this whole rap shtick is helping. I think it's hilarious.
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -6/+36On Letterman when he said he was pursuing a hip hop career, he paused in anticipation of the crowd laughing. Only a few laughed and his act of trying to be bewildered at the fact that people are laughing about his hip hop career fell flat. He's faking it like the hooker I had sex with.
- skybark, on 02/13/2009, -1/+22Spoiler alert.
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -1/+21he should be Joaquin into an insane asylum
- Gareth321, on 02/13/2009, -0/+19What!? He's dead!?! You prick.
- CTK14A, on 02/13/2009, -3/+22His latest movie was filmed in a notoriously ***** part of Jersey City. You can see a picture it in the article, complete with smokestacks and a chromium-laced field that doubles as a golf range. Spending extended periods of time in Jersey City can do things to you.
- macmcraeart, on 02/13/2009, -0/+18He who limps is still Joaquin. ~Stanislaw J. Lec.
- trickofdisaster, on 02/13/2009, -6/+24Casey: Damnit phoenix, you broke character at the end of Letterman and it's on Youtube.
Phoenix: *****, that was bad
Casey: From now on you don't break character for any reason, no matter what happens
Phoenix: all right, all right
Casey: That oscar's as good as ours!
Phoenix: Let's drink martinis! - Rikushix, on 02/13/2009, -1/+19I still think it's an artsy sort of act/"personal statement". And no, I don't think the guy's a douche or anything - he's a good actor - but it gets silly after a while (as funny as his appearance on Letterman was).
- jc7012, on 02/13/2009, -2/+19/thread
- idavidtang, on 02/13/2009, -0/+16Commodus still has a fit over not being emperor.
- brickbat, on 02/13/2009, -3/+18The way he got up, took off his glasses, and shook Letterman's hand certainly suggests that it was staged.
- elliotys, on 02/13/2009, -0/+15Maybe not a joke, but it's ***** hilarious.
- Greedfeed, on 02/13/2009, -1/+15Oh yes, Metallica, the end all be all of a talented career... Wait a minute.
- traveler1217, on 02/13/2009, -2/+15Joaquin Phoenix as Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison: 'I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.'
- minnecrapolis, on 02/13/2009, -1/+14So because he says it's not a hoax means it's not a hoax?
I guess Andy Kaufman saying his whole wrestling stint wasn't a hoax meant it wasn't.
Oh, right... - domdunc, on 02/13/2009, -0/+12Yeah it really did look like he was cracking up at the end. Letterman obviously caught him off guard with that one-liner.
- Mpwns, on 02/13/2009, -1/+13i think this is one huge inside joke that nobody outside his inner circle gets. or he is trying to prove just how judgmental we really are.
- kenhatesemos, on 02/13/2009, -1/+12the reason i know this is an act is the fact that he went on letterman without any intention of promoting anything. if you notice he didn't promote his rap, he didn't promote the movie. so what's the point of him going on letterman? so that they could include the footage in the documentary and have a big SURPRISE! moment when he tells everyone it was a ruse.
- bubbashine, on 02/13/2009, -2/+13How dare any of you so casually mock what you clearly don't understand. With a voice like his, he isn't stuck just doing Johnny Cash. And with his range, he easily translates his vocal talent into a rap album. Just because he doesn't appear like you wish to fit some preconceived image you have doubts. Joaquin is a *****' genius of rap.
- Tyrghast, on 02/13/2009, -1/+11It's like saying "Bruce Willis is dead at the end of Sixth Sense". Everyone knows it and those who don't, do now.
- robosexy, on 02/13/2009, -0/+10Yes! Thank you. I wish more people would understand this paradox.
- sildude, on 02/13/2009, -1/+10Jim is amazing when he isn't doing comedy but drama.
- junkjunk, on 02/13/2009, -2/+11For some reason I feel like he's pulling a very Kaufman-esque joke on the American public. Maybe that's just what I want to believe, but from the reactions he's getting it would be genius.
- dn11, on 02/13/2009, -0/+9Letterman has a long history of bizarre/awkward interviews like this. See Crispin Glover, Kaufman/ Lawler, Madonna from the 90's etc. It's definitely a performance, and a publicity stunt - and I guess it worked
- bigfatphony19, on 02/13/2009, -9/+17Almost dugg you but then you trash talked Jim Carrey.
He is an amazing actor. - rugabug, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8Done.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LieYeCudbQ8 - Luciapalooza, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8If this journalist spent an hour talking with Casey Affleck, then why is this the only real quote in the article?
"there's a million shades of gray in-between."
It seems as though he's just speaking for him, which isn't what a good journalist would do. Just a thought. - brundlefly76, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8I saw him at the Google inauguration ball and he was acting like this.
I think he wants to be the next Andy Kaufman. - DarkoKun, on 02/13/2009, -2/+9Let me guess... You dont?
- veins, on 02/13/2009, -2/+9LOL pre-death eh? good thing you specified i thought you meant like his current skeletal look hes trying to pull off.
- m0laria, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7What, Bruce Willis was in Sixth Sense? You prick.
- WiretapStudios, on 02/13/2009, -1/+8So your hooker was a different dude than he looked like?
- melivorous, on 02/13/2009, -2/+9cant he be something other than an actor?
him being all quiet on letterman was awkward because we expect him to dish out some stories on the movie and be entertaining, but not all people are just walking clowns for your amusement.
the expectation of him having this make-believe movie star persona, and not, is what shocks people.
maybe thats why he wants to quit acting, because you never stop acting, its all bs. - claybird, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1356864/
