- skored, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Such a sad story - I really hope this has a happy ending
- jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36@anonymoustroll : are you stupid? welcome to my blocked list
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I never even heard of the guy before his story was brought to Digg for the first time. And yet.. I almost feel sick thinking something bad might have happened. They just look like nice people :/
I've heard horror stories about the mountains up there.. lots of accidents. Icy roads, sometimes with no guard rails, always raining, etc. Scary stuff. - indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21you're why the world hates morons.
- Recuso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I'm kinda just hoping he comes back a week later and says "Oh, what's this all about? Ah, my wife and I had an argument and we decided to reconcile things by spending two weeks in a hotel as a little "Vacation time" away from everything! Sorry about all the fuss, we're back now."
... But that's seeming more and more unrealistic every second.
I hope things do turn out well. - Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I wish you wouldn't refer to me as nobody.
All i know is that I'm gonna be extremely upset and angry if I find out something happened to the two children. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13more likely a car accident. i'm not familiar with the topology of the area, but perhaps they drove off the road. hopefully, they're just stuck somewhere and it's just a matter of time before a helicopter spots them.
- Walker2323, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I'm really bummed about this. He was one of the good guys on TechTV.
- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Well, as much as I hope they're still alive, the situation does look grim. In which case, I sincerely hope they weren't involved in some kind of robbery turn homicide.
- Wugie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I hate to look on the down side of things, but things really aren't looking too good
- blugger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i used to drive those roads going from Portland to SF once every couple months. especially at this time of year, it can be pretty hairy. the roads are very windy, snow and ice isn't uncommon, and my least favorite thing that came up was a thick fog that would make it hard to even tell where the road was.
it's terrible, but i can imagine pretty easily how a small saab, late at night, on roads that surely were frozen (if it was already down to 35 in eugene, there's really no question), could meet an unfortunate end. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12OK, that got a smile out of me only because its hilarious how insensitive some can be. But hey it is the internet, I should be used to it by now.
I remember seeing him on TechTV back in the day. Hope they are ok and get found or find their way from wherever they are soon. - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Why is this comment being dugg down? Reality often ends in tears. I'm hoping for the best as much as anyone else, but the possibility of an unfortunate conclusion exists.
- orenthal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5what really makes me sick at my stomach is to think about their two kids being hurt or hungry and stuck up in those mountains. i really really hope this story turns out well.
- jwstaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I remember him from the days of TechTV - one of the cooler guys in my opinion. Let's hope they're OK.
- arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The most unlikely of people have survived against overwhelming odds a great number of times - Sheer human determination is a factor capable of overcoming even the worst.
I admire your perspective, but now is not the time to give up hope. - Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I mean, once it's clear, you can pull the tires off and burn them for a signal that can be seen for miles. Also, you can pretty much tear the car apart for a lot of stuff that will be useful for survival (improvised snowshoes, extra insulation, maps of the area, etc etc)"
You saw that show on Discovery, didn't you? - hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The internet where people can actually get away with being a jerk.
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@mrwiggl3s
You are either:
a) a troll or
b) a moron with no emotions. - carpeclunes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whats scary is that it can happen to anybody.
- RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't looking good :( I really hope they are at least alive and can make it.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They just have to make sure not to let dysentery get the best of them....
- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm in Portland right now and having been around the mountainy areas around here, I can say that those areas are really treacherous. So many trees around there, and with a river running near the road..... I hope they are found.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2More pictures and info in case anyone is in the area
http://www.jamesandkati.com/ - bametzler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Found the mom & daughters in southern Oregon about 2 hrs ago, still looking for James, who tried to walk out 2 days ago.
- buuch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i wish i had heard about this sooner, i live in southern oregon i would have loved to bother him. hope he and his family are safe... i loved his reviews on techtv
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5DIGG USERS - CALL TO ACTION
I hate that I am using a sad story such as this to address this point, but I've had enough and I feel that I have to do what I have to do.
I am a regular CNET reader, listener, and viewer. James Kim has been in my web browser, iPod, and television on such a regular basis that he's become like an old friend. Reading some of the comments posted on Digg against the many stories about the Kim family disappearance, it's clear that I'm not the only one who feels this way.
On the other hand, I have felt physically ill reading some of the comments posted against stories about the Kim family by several users of Digg. I have read through heartless comments complaining that stories are dupes, miscategorized, and other such violations of the almighty "Digg rules." I won't deign to reproduce some of the more despicable comments I've read because they are below any acceptable level of decency and humanity.
Digg has the potential to become a great community of individuals sharing intelligent discourse on a variety of subjects. However, it has instead increasingly become a magnet for a large population of truly depraved individuals. I still have hope that these individuals are in the minority and Digg can be taken back from them.
So, Digg users, this is your call to action. Join me in blocking users who add to the deterioration of the Digg community. The more of us that block the contemptible degenerates that troll Digg, the faster they will become invisible to the community at large.
Allow me to help you on this path. The following is the list of users that I have blocked simply based on their comments against stories about the Kim family:
Finster
gyroscopic
anonymoustroll
mrwiggl3s
xeno439
PAJK
APac
Santabot
jpeckinp
simonl
mdollarsign
jkaiser
mieses
RealHyperX
radicaldementia
modafekshen
I will reproduce this list on every existing story I find about the Kim family and every new story that is posted. I will post it as a comment on every blog post or news story that I find about the Kim family. I will post it on CNET's forums. I will also maintain and grow this list with each new posting. I’m certain that even responses to this comment will add several new names to the list.
Digg users, it's time we banished the depraved few that seem to exist only to deteriorate the quality of the Digg community. - girl7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know it's really sad. My sincere prayers for them. I really hope that they would eventually find them.
- Cubedude04, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I hope he is found soon =(
- nerdofnerds, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I hope somebody ***** ass rapes you for that comment.
This man and his family are lost and probably hungry and cold if not dead, but you still managed to be a complete and total ass hat.
There is a time to be funny and make fun of people, and there is a time to shut up. - jackwaters, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I so hope that he is ok.... He is such a legend and his family is so lovely.....
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nobody has found me yet!
- fullmetalx89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I really hope police find him and his family alive.
- lexicon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1There is actually a lot he can do to improve the odds of surviving and being found. The problem is that he's a Cnet editor, and probably isn't well versed in cold weather survival technique.
I mean, once it's clear, you can pull the tires off and burn them for a signal that can be seen for miles. Also, you can pretty much tear the car apart for a lot of stuff that will be useful for survival (improvised snowshoes, extra insulation, maps of the area, etc etc) - aerofoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Lost on the Oregon trail? If they didn't tip their wagon while attempting to ford a river, I bet a wheel came off his wagon, one of his oxen died, or maybe they got cholera.
- xcrunner10, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6I seriously can't/don't want to believe that there are people in this world that either
A) Want him dead
B) Are too concerned weather or not this is in the right category.
C) "nobody cares about the kim family" Who the hell is nobody? I think his friends, readers, and relatives care. - BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3The real intelligence shows when people actually answer a person with troll in their name.
- korea, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2No, its true. If you look at the following article, you'll find several incredibly prejudiced comments about Asians and driving despite that this particular item involved the video of someone being killed. http://digg.com/videos_people/Asian_Lady_Run_Over_Multiple_Times_Video
Many of the people here could be categorized as sociopaths.
I wish the best for Mr. Kim and his family. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1truth hurts, don't it? I am not saying AT ALL, that I don't want the Kims found safe and sound, lord knows I don't want that, what I am saying is, help all or don't bring it up every time some new blog mirrors all the news we already know about the story
- blugger, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2not good
- mcrosby, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1you insensitive little prick
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8They're dead. Period.
Don't get delusional. There's no way in hell they've survived out there, short of Jimmy going hunting and cooking rabbits on a stick. There is no way they had the necessary supplies to survive in the cold for that length of time, even with food. A Saab is not shelter in this situation.
In all likelihood they didn't survive the initial car accident, as had they, they would have been found by now, alive or dead.
It's a damn shame, he was a nice guy, but let's just be logical. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I put it to digg, to bring ALL missing persons cases to the forefront, and help in finding anyone that is missing... oh wait, we only care about people who have been on tv, gotcha.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3There are people out there who deserve to be where this family is, in the news.
Why do i care that he drove off a cliff? I don't
I don't see why anyone else here would. Sure its sad, but o ***** well. Worse happens every day. - Dotcommer, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1***** you wiggles, you're a ***** head, and shut the ***** up Scott, you just fail at life.
Don't worry everyone else, they're gonna be alright. Why? Because im ignorant and I dont believe anything bad will happen because I refuse to think anything bad will happen. - f8tbrautmehere, on 10/12/2007, -20/+6@anonymoustroll
Que the appropriate responses to your being a stupid *****.
As for this man and his family being lost, I fear the worst and they are no longer living due to an accident. My heart goes out to the surviving family if this is the case. - avcore, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3This is nothing but a cover up. Next it's Leo, then finally... Kevin.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+3When did one person's comment on Digg become representative of America?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -30/+1so if he wasn't one of the "good guys" from techTV you wouldn't give a *****?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -96/+6nobody cares about the kim family
