I think that the publicity generated by the campers reached Hugh Jackman's ears and he decided to do something nice for them. So no, I don't think he did this to get more publicity. He showed appreciation to some hardcore fans, and that's more than a lot of people can say about themselves.

A woman came up with her 5 or 6 year old son in a wheelchair, and Hugh pushed everyone out of the way to meet the kid and give him an autograph. Seems like a real good guy.

He flew in on a helicopter and ran straight inside the home and came out with everyone on his shoulder and a cure for cancer. Afterwords he gave us all free pizza. He's a really good guy.
