- Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I happened to like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", thanks
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34I'm not ready to throw Robin Williams under the bus yet.
- aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28Forget the bus. Throw him under an RV.
- yourstrulydave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Robin Williams has gotten a bad rap.
His comeback...
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/manoftheyear/ - Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Cosby's in semi-retirement and doing exactly what he wants to do, which is public speaking and writing. If retirement from being a comedy funny-man means he isn't funny anymore, presumably he's fine with that. This is a list of people who are still trying to be funny and failing. which Cosby isn't.
- m0oSe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14After looking over your past comments, don't bother posting if you don't follow your own advice.
- JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Very good points on each and every count. A little harsh on some of the films, I think...but the author certainly does make several valid points. Dugg. Here's hoping the likes of Jim Carey wise up.
- Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20what about
Dennis Miller
When He lost it....
After he left Saturday night live
and became a political hack - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Since when has Cracked become such a go-to source for interesting lists (see also: The 5 Most Obviously Drug Fueled Appearances list posted earlier this month)? You never would have thought that Mad magazine's uglier cousin would actually produce quality content.
Well, all I can say is, keep the lists coming! - joncoop, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Is it me or do a lot comedians start losing their appeal when they sober up?
- tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Dave Chapel literally cracked after 2 seasons ... not exactly a "long run"
- Silby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think the author was a little too harsh on all of them. "So I married an axe murderer" and "Good Morning Vietnam" were both movies I thought were some of Mike Myer's and Robin William's best (I highly recomment So I Married an Axe Murderer, because it is not as well known as Good Morning, Vietnam and probably Myer's best film).
Even though the Austin Powers series were juvenile in taste, I wouldn't call them a low point in Myer's career. However, I do see the points he makes with the comedians past their prime, I just think the points he picked that they "jumped the shark" is too early. - MasterGrief, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Not after what he did on The Daily Show recently--That was hilarious. Just so very, very funny.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Great article.
I always single out Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin as two funny guys who just ain't funny anymore. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I guess that's what happens when comedians stop doing comedy and become actors.
- Shmoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That was a good list. I was expecting to see Adam Sandler though.
- ageedoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You do know that Dave Chappelle has been in comedy long before Chappelle's Show, right?
Men in Tights anyone? - renpatel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I liked it until they started dissing Jim Carrey's ETERNAL SUNSHINE...
That may not be his typical comedy, but give the guy credit for doing something different and actually rocking at it. Is it really that bad that these five individuals don't want to burn out so they try something different? They were great in the hey day but I think it's now when they're older and mature where they are finding themselves...but what do I know. - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I worked around Jim Carrey on one of his movies (Me, Myself, and Irene). The guy is an ass. I hate the fact that I actually enjoy a few of his films, but once you know the real person it's hard to get around it.
- culebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah give the guy a break. At least he made it out of the game alive and with the most dignity of any comedian. Plus you forget the tragic loss of his son a few years back. That would be enough to make anyone loose their gift of laughter. Cosby is a comedy god and is a living legend.
On a side note: My father used to live in Reno back in the 70&80's and saw cosby several times. After each performance he would go around the casino and hang out with people at the tables and give everyone a good time. He is the epitome of a class act. Can you see Dave Chepelle doing that? Hell no. I saw Chapelle live back in 97 in SF and his rehersed comedy was good (as it usually is) but his improv comedy was a disgrace. All he could resort to after his act was insulting the people who paid good money to see him. I left the club at that point and was ridiculed by him for doing so. According to him "That honkey just don't get black humor". I guess I don't.
Cosby would never do anything like that. - dmoore764, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Both Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy were in a movie recently that I think was hugely underappreciated; Bowfinger is in the top of my list of all-time favorites.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Dependency problems... I guess that's a nice way to say "coke head".
Robin Williams was skiing a slope of Colombian White through much of the 70's, watch his old stand up and its pretty obvious. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Add Chevy Chase. Whoever thought Garret Morris would be more hip that Chevy?
- ryanchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Steve Martin's books are hilarious though. He has lost it like most actors in the business long. Everyone on that list has become to family friendly. Comedy is not friendly.
- JeyNyce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At first I disagreed with the list (except Eddie, he's gone) but after reading it I'm starting to agreed with. Poor Steve Martain, you were the man!
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, some have lost it, but there are reasons, some good some bad.
I don't like most of the new Eddie Murphys stuff (but he is great as Donkey), but he decided that after he had kids he didn't want to do any more blue comedy. Maybe not so funny, maybe not so lucrative, but I admire his conscience.
I thought that Shopgirl was pretty good, but Martin was actually the worst part of it. - thomasknowland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why is there a post in every discussion from my 8th grade english teacher?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Chevy Chase has been out of comedy forever, we're talking about people still active.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I want to see the next 5 who are still great, I bet Bill Murray gets #1
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6haha, 4 out of 5, damn I'm good.
and yea, Williams deserves #1 with a bullet, I thought Steve Martin would be higher - because he's extremely unfunny nowadays. I think both however know that they are dated and don't have the edge newer comedians do...
Jim Carrey was the one I didn't count on, honestly I don't think he's lost it at all, he's just doing a lot of crappy drama movies. If he wanted to be funny again, it would happen - then again I could be wrong... - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't think it's that Adam Sandler was a great who went downhill, I think it's just that every single one of his characters is exactly the same. It was funny the first time, but it got boring.
- arcrox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Am I the only one here who thinks Bowfinger was an incredibly funny movie?
- kristov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think Eddie Murphy should definately be #1 - the difference between who he was and how amazing he was compared to what he is now is just staggering.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I totally disagree about Jim Carrey... He still puts out some great stuff...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lol you got my 5th =)
seriously they bash Myers for putting the same movie out over and over...Sandler is KING in that dept. - nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This list doesn't make very much sense. They claim to tell us when comedians have lost it but say Mike Meyers lost it before his funniest movie (Austin Powers 1). I think all he needs is one movie and he can be saved. And while its true that Jim Carrey has not done anything as funny as Ace Ventura since Ace Ventura (man on the moon shouldn't count because he was playing Andy Kaufman) his dramas have been mostly good quirky dramedies. I mean even they mention that 3 of his dramas are good (Man on the Moon, Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine...) so really who cares. Bruce Almighty and Dick and Jane weren't that bad and The Majestic was underrated.
- culebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Two words. Martin Lawrence. Well was he every really funny?
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're right, I've been very impressed after being sent there by a digg story a few days ago. Cracked was always a poor man's mad, but their website has some great content - I think they have a great writing staff.
- ro2182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4no Adam Sandler?
Jim Carry did'nt lose anything - Junel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I knew Murphy HAD to be on that list!
- HouseofEl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3theBrink....I totally agree with you on Carrey. I think he has lost his way in Hollywood. In fact I would go as far as to say that he does still have it. Both as a comedic and dramatic actor. He just needs to have the right role for both. His comedic talent has been tapped but his dramatic talent has not. I think his turn from comedy is a result of him starting to get typecast and over exposed. The funny faces and goofy act was getting old. I do think he can return to that now though.
- martin993, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I laughed my arse off at So I Married An Axe Murderer. The bit with the kid with the big head kills me.
I think he said Eternal Sunshine was "non-*****". In that, he would be wrong. - stonedgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah but for every Bowfinger, there's 8 or 9 Cheaper by the Dozens.
/will never stop loving Steve Martin
//I'll probably never see another Eddie Murphy movie though
///Steve Martin should make a movie with Charlie Murphy - nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thank you for mentioning Sandler. The man-boy thing got old after happy-gilmore. Drew Barrymore is the one doing good in the romantic comedies he makes and with Click it seems like he is going to Steve Martin territory.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was surprisingly well written and nicely thought out. I wouldn't have expected that from Cracked.
- Legondaree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow no martin lawrence
and soon maybe dave chappelle - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish Jim Carrey would go back to doing Ace Ventura, Mask, Dumb and Dumber-type films. The pseudo-intelligent films just don't suit him. Sure his old ones were stupid, but they were really, really funny.
Still, I'm hoping Steve Carell manages to avoid ending up on this list in a few years time. Just looking at him makes me wet my pants with laughter. - tttaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2George Carlin needs to be in this list somewhere. I used to laugh at his stuff until I cried, but now he's just an angry, old man.
- culebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jim Carey did a great job in the Andy Coffman movie. It was pure drama, and he nailed the role perfectly. Not a great film I would watch all the time, but I still respected his performance. Eternal sunshine however I saw nothing special. It could have been played by Tom Cruise or Tom Arnold and the role would have been the same. Face it, it was a dry and boring plot.
