- AdmiralAcbar, on 10/14/2009, -1/+61120 lbs and they think she's fat? That's sickening.
- elijahyossie, on 10/14/2009, -0/+445 ft 10 and 120lb - that gives her a BMI of 17.5, where less than 19 is usually considered below a healthy weight, and 19 to 25 is healthy.
- missjames, on 10/14/2009, -0/+37I don't know how anyone would think that photoshopping someone that thin is OK. For more insight on the crazy warped minds of designers, check out a related story:
http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/fashion/2009/ ...
In that one, Karl Lagerfield says: "No one wants to see curvy women. You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly." Stay Klassy, Lagerfield. - sbcea, on 10/14/2009, -2/+33Oh wait ... so that is what fat looks like? Oh man ... I've been wrong all these years!
- mrMunchies, on 10/14/2009, -1/+22She looks way better than some of those models who are so skinny that it looks like they are starving to death.
- WasabiHound, on 10/14/2009, -1/+22Is Ralph Lauren saying you need to stopping eating to afford his clothing? Crazy stuff - Emaciation sells? Body image gone mad.
- inactive, on 10/14/2009, -5/+26Ironically Hamilton was in the Ralph Lauren ad that her appearance was altered to make her look very thin.
- Somnolentone, on 10/14/2009, -7/+26Except, BMI is a crock of *****. Not saying she doesn't look unhealthily skinny (That shopped picture is frightening), but BMI is an absolutely terrible gauge for obesity.
- Stoyanov, on 10/15/2009, -1/+16She is gorgeous without any photoshopping. Why can't they just respect that?
- prisoner24601, on 10/14/2009, -0/+15Ralph Lauren's PR department has somehow managed to take one absolutely absurd misstep and turn it into two. I wonder how their strategy meetings work:
"Hey guys, our brand value is too high. What can we do about it?"
We could airbrush a model to look like a stick. Even better, an emaciated stick. In fact, let's take it to a whole new level where her head is so much larger than her pelvis she'll look like some kind of alien mutant instead of the beautiful woman she is in real life.
"Wow, that's a good start, but we REALLY need some more criticism. I'm pretty determined to get our brand value down more than that can do by itself."
OK, no problem, let's fire her too. That way we can basically tell the world that we actually do believe models truly should look like emaciated sticks and we're willing to back up the "talk" of our offensive ad with our "walk" by actually firing her.
"Now you're on the right track! But can't we take this a little further?"
Humm. I don't know. I'm running out of ideas here. Maybe we could take our skinniest model, starve her for a few more days, then have her go on Good Morning America as a PR spokeswoman to say we were justified in firing Hamilton because "she was a fat slob" because she weighed a whole 120 pounds. Now THAT might finish the job. That should pretty much alienate every single person who has ever bought our products. - elijahyossie, on 10/14/2009, -3/+17It's a useful guide, not a rule. But no-one who is 5 ft 10 and under 8 stone can be considered in any way fat or overweight.
- CaviMike, on 10/15/2009, -1/+14This is what happens when you have gay men designing womens clothes.
- GavinZac, on 10/15/2009, -0/+13BMI isn't a crock of *****. Its increasingly less useful as you add muscle mass, but for an average person it's a decent scale to work out where someone is very quickly without strapping them to a body fat percentage reader or something.
- Tyrghast, on 10/15/2009, -1/+13Oh that's not going to ***** with her self image at all...
She's beautiful in that top pic - Leezus, on 10/15/2009, -1/+13She can come model for my clothing line.
(Hint: I don't have a clothing line. *wink wink, nudge nudge*) - AdmiralAcbar, on 10/15/2009, -0/+9Uh, yes. Yes it is.
- nicko68, on 10/15/2009, -0/+8Exactly what I'm saying! We straight guys like curves, we don't want our women looking like little boys.
- Orchid64, on 10/15/2009, -1/+9Isn't it past the time for people to say "enough is enough"? I'm not saying we need to hire fat models, but I do think that the fashion industries distorted view of bodies is out of hand and that consumers need to stop supporting them with their dollars.
Fashion designers are looking for human clothes hangers. It's all about how the clothes look and not about how they look on a real person. It's an effort to fool people into believing they'll look as "good" as the models if they wear the designer's clothes. - rusty0101, on 10/15/2009, -1/+7She is a beautiful woman, and it's obscene what was done to her image. It's hardly a new phenomena, just look for the Dove videos on YouTube.
RL and the modeling biz is at fault. I wish the very best for her. - JigoroKano, on 10/15/2009, -0/+6She doesn't look like an athlete, so I highly doubt that a more accurate FMI and FFMI are going to suggest much different.
- lis880, on 10/15/2009, -0/+6Who the ***** finds starving chicks attractive? Seriously ask any dude ANY straight dude and hes gonna say thats not sexy.
- Aurabolt, on 10/15/2009, -2/+8I don't see any that are overweight. You guys are sick.
- RagManX, on 10/15/2009, -0/+6As much as rain on your wedding day, I suppose.
- TheDigitalBug, on 10/15/2009, -0/+6It's called overzealous detection AKA false positive.
- Locupleto, on 10/15/2009, -0/+5Why is it porn uses women more curvy than the fashion industry? Hummm.
- painting, on 10/15/2009, -1/+6posting information that is in the article is considered ironic now?
- MrSteamTank, on 10/15/2009, -1/+6Please, tell me more. I am interested in your business proposal.
- directedition, on 10/15/2009, -1/+6Amazing times we live in. We have obesity epidemic, and the powers that be can still a call a twig like her "fat".
- MrSteamTank, on 10/15/2009, -0/+5It's true. Your only job is to be pretty. The weird thing is that the magazines with these women are geared towards other women. Why the hell do they buy them?
Men aren't interested in women like that anyways. Go to men magazines and you'll usually see women with a little more meat on their bones. - carnag3aus, on 10/15/2009, -1/+5She's so fat, last time she saw 90210, was on the scales.
- tdogg241, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4Yeah, her muscular frame is definitely rendering her BMI totally useless. /s
- eviscerator, on 10/15/2009, -1/+5seriously, the woman to the far right is not fat or overweight. I know it's a matter of taste too, but I think you might need to check how much you let the media feed you with stick women...
- portnoy, on 10/15/2009, -1/+5I think what Ralph is telling us is that he likes his girls to look like young boys. Or maybe that he just plain likes, young boys. Since liking young boys is kind of frowned upon he fills his needs in a more socially acceptable way, with images of girls that only look like young boys. And by sharing these images with the world he has apparently shifted us all into lusting after girls who resemble young boys. Personally I think girls were meant to have curves, to give that little visual cue that says "Hey, look at me! I'm not a young boy!" and that curvy girly look is something that I personally would rather see. Me not much being into the whole "young boy" thing. But I like what I like and Ralph likes what Ralph likes. The rest of you have to follow your own tastes.
- tdogg241, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3Wow, judgmental much?
- sibos, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3Dugg for exposing their disrespect to photoshoppers everywhere. That ad is an insult to our work, and if Ralph Lauren continues to hire under qualified graphic designers to do their ads, we should boycott!
- apetrie, on 10/15/2009, -2/+5None of them are overweight, the far right one included. They are all normal looking women, shes just definitely a pear shape.
If you feel that is promoting an unhealthy view of women, I think you need to consider the possibility that it is perhaps you that has an unhealthy, inappropriate view. I feel sorry for any women in your life as they undoubtedly have to live up to your unrealistic expectations, and unless they happen to be the naturally very slim type as far as gaining weight and bone structure, it must be a miserable influence in their lives. - iDiggYa, on 10/14/2009, -4/+7I know!!
Those mothers should be sitting in front of the kitchen table serving me a sammich! - autokad, on 10/15/2009, -1/+4i think the real issue is, who cares if they fired someone because she was 'over weight'? Models are hired/fired based on appearance, as thats what they do. can we blame them for bad taste? sure, but she can go huhuhu to someone else for that story as I could care less.
- Robustica, on 10/15/2009, -1/+3I love think women too. Intellectual stimulation is great.
- disturbed4686, on 10/15/2009, -1/+3They should fire whoever attempted to photoshop that photo, not her
- buckrogers1965, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2Idiots like Ralphie boy have screwed up so many women.
- Zoshchenko, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2Typical corporate thinking:
"We made a mistake. What can we do to fix it? I know, do something even stupider and claim there's no connection!" - benderillo, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2spoken like a true fatty
- WoollyMittens, on 10/15/2009, -1/+3Can't we demand "real women", like we can demand "real cheese" and "real chocolate" in products?
- hakkola, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2No kidding, it isn't even coincidence and has nothing to do with irony.
- bjs3171, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2that photo is clearly a mistake.
- feelmypimphand, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1omfg
- bjs3171, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1yeah...i know. that was the entire point of the article.
- WoollyMittens, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2Because porn mostly caters to men and fashion mostly caters to women?
I must agree that I like curvy pron stars a hell of a lot better than those bags of antlers on the catwalk. - ironxcross, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1seriously? she's awesome..
