It may have given her a few weeks longer, but in the end the treatment failed miserably. The doctors and cancer center got their money (>100k) and my mother still died. In hind site, she would have been better off telling the oncologist to ***** off and cash out her 401k to travel and enjoy her remaining days.

- Klinky, on 05/15/2009, -3/+7Well you can giggle, but surgery when dealing with this disease usually means removal of the anal sphincter and a colostomy being created. Which is something that would be very hard to deal with. I doubt you'd do much giggling when faced with that proposition.
Luckily there are radiation/chemo therapies available, but those do not always guarantee you'll remain continent either. Both chemo/radiation are powerful and have their own side effects, and may not cure the cancer.
The disease is very serious and people should do what they can to lead a healthy lifestyle to avoid it. - Klinky, on 05/15/2009, -2/+6Just trying to inject some reality into the situation before people giggle about "ass cancer" and then go on about their daily lives. Also I doubt everyone knows all that happens for all diseases, perhaps knowing more in-depth will make people have a more serious discussion about this topic rather than trying to crack jokes on digg.
Also she is most likely going to die, that is something that most people would not want to face and I would hope, if I were in that state, that people are thinking of my condition and wishing me well/a painless passing/miraculous recovery rather than joking about my condition because they think it sounds funny. This doesn't mean older individuals are engaging in anal sex. Anal sex is not the only reason for anal cancer developing & the act alone may not be what causes it. As noted in the wiki it appears HPV plays a big part in the causation, though a large part of the population carries HPV, so you could say that engaging in anal sex may up your chances. But that alone does not mean that old people are engaging in anal sex, though it's possible earlier engagement in those activities may have played a part later on in life - or again may not have played any part at all. Just like how someone can develop lung cancer w/o having smoked cigarettes.
