Shawn was driven to suicide because he could no longer get a job and couldn't pay for his own survival by how much the cult fair gamed him. He even stopped protesting for a long time because of the bad state he was in. A better comparison might be David Miscavige's mother-in-law, who "committed suicide" by "shooting herself" twice in the chest and once in the temple WITH A RIFLE.
