- PearlJammer985, on 07/15/2009, -0/+25I was there...despite the lack of a real "show", it was quite the spectacle. Someday I'll be able to tell my kids that I hotboxed Pioneer Square with Dave Chappelle and 4000 of his closest friends.
- OptimusPrimate, on 07/17/2009, -0/+23Chappelle said it best: "The best show...that almost happened."
- adamchristopher, on 07/15/2009, -1/+23It was uneventful yet epic. Dave is the coolest guy in the world. no entourage, no police escort, just walked through the crowed and got on stage.
- shinepdx, on 07/17/2009, -2/+13That's just how Portland rolls
- Jackinorygun, on 07/17/2009, -1/+12It started out by him telling five people and over four thousand showed up. It was still considered a rumor until he finally got there around 1:00 am with a battery powered vox box and a mic cranked to 11. Luckily, I was in one of the front rows and tall so i could actually hear him unlike 95% of the people there. It was dope as *****.
- RonMedulla, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12Yet another example of when keepin' it real goes wrong.
- TheBigBad, on 07/17/2009, -1/+11Looks like Dave has been hitting the gym. He used to be kinda scrawny but his arms look pumped in that video.
- CaptainAO, on 07/17/2009, -1/+10Some friends called me around 9 that night after hearing a ton of rumors on Twitter that he would be doing an impromptu show. By 11:30 there had to be at least a few thousands people at Pioneer Square. The crowd started going crazy, a drunk couple even managed to climb on top of a Starbucks and started stripping. Chappelle arrived at around 1, and was in complete awe that so many people showed up. Even though he didn't have the chance to put on much of a show, the whole experience made for what was probably the craziest night of my life.
- rhinofinger, on 07/17/2009, -1/+10Man, I was wondering what happened to him. Pray we'll get the Chapelle show back!
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8Can we get one digg topic where we don't have to talk about politics?
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7Do you honestly believe people are gonna read all that stuff?
- mparker21311, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6I live in Dayton, Ohio which is very close to where Dave Chappelle lives. He lives in a town called "Yellow Springs" which is a hippy college town with a cool culture of laid back people. He calls it his "***** you hollywood barn".
One Sunday morning my girlfriend and I were walking down the downtown strip in Yellow Springs and here comes Dave Chappelle walking by himself, walking passed us... no one acted any different to him and they treated him like a regular in the town. Which he is. My girlfriend and I about ***** a brick though, we were a little star struck. But even more shocking was how regular he seemed in that town and how people respected his privacy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Springs,_Ohio - TheBigBad, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6It's not Donnie Darko. Those of us who are not morons don't really have to "read into" an impromptu Dave Chapelle performance.
- Boggy20, on 07/17/2009, -2/+5“Most people don't know what it's like to stand up there and speak their mind. I have a venue to do that. I get paid to do that. It's not like I'm doing heavy lifting up there. It's not like I'm solving the world's problems. It's like I'm hanging out with a bunch of people and it's cool.” - Dave Chappelle
- lektroluv, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3I can't hear *****.
- KingGorilla, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Thanks ***** for blocking the view of a bunch of people!
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1***** man after reading your comment I've become a bigger fan of Chappele.
- audioscience, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I wish I had been there to witness Chappelle, and Adam.
Maybe he'll do a cool free show in the future there with The Roots opening up for him and maybe and ample sound system.
I like the flash mob impromptuness of it all though. - adamchristopher, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1yeah, it was very impressive. to see that many people gather from word of mouth was a trip. now move back to portland!

After watching that I can understand how hard it was to put on a "real" show. Damn that's a lot of people. - UtopianComplex, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I heard estimates being higher for the number. I was 10 feet from the stage on the left for a couple hours. It was fun, but it is nice to be able to finally hear what he was trying to say...
It was a great atmosphere though, naked people on starbucks, hard alcohol bottles everywhere, the entire square was packed and the police shut down all four streets surrounding it so people were spilling into the streets, and 4000 people showed up after he just told four about it. Go Social Networking! - hellotyler, on 07/24/2009, -0/+1That wasn't a show, too many people showed up and the police freaked out and they had to call it off :/ I love chapelle and sincerely hope he comes back though! We need you man!
- Fleagleman, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I missed this somehow. Not anyone I know had any idea this was happening, yet so many people showed up. Crazy. Granted, 4,000 people crowded Pioneer Square (and trust me folks, it's not really that big) to hear him on a crappy amp go on and on about the fact that he only has an amp and that he was not prepared for this. Still, a great example of how fast news travels in this day and age.
- andreo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Wow, you can't hear or see crap from in the back. Just the top of the tent and a the crowed cheering.
- delose, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0I left the big crowd at the square early and walked back to my car near the heathman hotel and I saw him through the lobby window. there was a crowd out there and he came out with that camera, im in the background at some point!
- rileyhallwood, on 07/17/2009, -2/+2thats all you draw from this video?
- talkwithtim, on 07/18/2009, -0/+0I missed him at the Portland Airport but my friend saw him. Too bad it was a crappy setup with almost no publicity.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1If the impromtu show didn't happen, why bother posting it? He showed up and said, 'Hey, lookit how popular I still am! Can't perform though, see ya'
- delose, on 07/17/2009, -1/+0GOOD SIR YOU ARE A KUMQUAT INDEED!
- yocouchdigga, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1what is this i dont even

- tmartin417, on 07/17/2009, -9/+2Chappelle in Portland > Obama in Portland
- drex8, on 07/17/2009, -20/+1LOL ! Sister Rant.
Or is it this dude's intense hatred towards Macs (or PCs - I'm confused) somehow being channeled towards his sister? Though I sort of feel this guy's frustration.
" nevinl: LOL...Macs and Apple remind me of my sister...
She bought a Gateway laptop (of course, she didn't research it...). She can't figure out how to upload a picture to Flickr or setup a Facebook account. Someone (me) has to do it for her. Then she forgets as soon as I show her. No motivation to learn just about anything. Not even how to use the web, much less trying to figure out how to use a program. Pretty (I guess??), but just randomly dumped a long time boyfriend "just for the hell of it" and now can't get a guy to save her life...33 y/o....kids or family? Good luck with that one, sis...
She bought an 1TB external drive (me: "Buy this one by putting in your CC number'), I loaded it up with 600 gig's of mp3s and a few of her favorite movies for her. Then she remodeled her living room, kitchen, bathroom x2, dining room all within the past year. Had the kitchen cabinet and floor guys redo the ENTIRE job at least two or three times (at HER cost)...apparently the color didn't look right once it was installed. That includes the time when she ******PAINTED****** HER BRAND NEW SLATE FLOOR. WTF!!?!??!?!!?! AND SHE KNEW THAT IT WAS JUST REGULAR PAINT!!! Then she had to replace the pipes to get a higher flow in the bathroom....removed cabinets yet again. Replaced the new bathroom counter at least twice. I don't want to know how much she spent...she murmured that ONE of the bathrooms (probably 12'x10') was $60k....and this is in a rowhome that is worth only ~$100k. Yet she still (8+ years) has a floorjack in the basement with a 2x4 that holds the major supporting beam for the house....which, btw, has been cracked for at least 8 years now.
She couldn't figure/bother trying to figure out how to use her ipod or mp3s, so she lugs around a 200 cd case in her car. Chain-smokes and can only drive at night...otherwise her "anxiety" takes hold while flipping through her CD case. Even though her new Jeep supports mp3 cds and has an aux input, she is still using those same scratched CDs. Drives with a foot on the gas and her left foot on the dash by the steering wheel and a cigarette in hand. Bluetooth headset? LOL....good luck!!! I am totally amazed she can drive a straight line...and amazed that oncoming traffic can detect the "idiot driver" (ala "I'm thinking Arby's) sign that must certainly be floating just above the hood.
So she says that she's going to replace her laptop and was considering a Mac.
Me: "Not a bad idea. Whatever you like, right? You said that you're interested in replacing your [5 month old] BB with the iPhone 3Gs? Nice! What were you doing with your old BB then?"
She (and I) and now thrilled because she calls the Apple staff for any support calls.
Me: "I really can't help you out. I don't have a Mac.....sorry!" [click]
=D
/rant
So macs are expensive? That depends on whose buying it...."
