- jongos, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3To be fair to Lee, he wasn't saying that black soldiers should be the ones at Iwo Jima raising the flag. He just meant that they should have had some presence on the field (because that would be more historically accurate). Even if they were just extras, it would be a more realistic portrayal than not having any at all. I'm not sure why he needs to "shut his face", he made a valid critique.

The problem is that the writers of this piece were aiming at a tough, no nonsense, non histrionic account of war..again. The counter point movie from a Japanese point of view was, if a little sanguine, at least stretching for this " war is insanity" theme. The conflict is really, was this trying to be a historic film. There was obviously no historian interested in the role of diversity on the battlefield. Of course that was not the theme of the movie. The presence of stock characters was more like 60's TV drama's (that actually had some "token" blacks, native Americans and..even Latinos). So when you do art, especially on such a large budget, that is doing something that is as historically charged as this, do you have to get it right. Would there have been some "black" units mixed in the scenes that are depicted. If there would not have been should they have been inserted anyway?
Spike is right to complain but Eastwood made the movie. Like it for what it is or not! - kelvynator, on 06/10/2008, -0/+0Clint Eastwood has made some of the most racist movies ever. Dirty Harry created the most negative images of black men in the history of movies and this was spread worldwide. What he did to Charlie Parker was an insult to African-American culture and to world culture. He only focused on the darkest aspect of "Bird" and totally ignored the magic that made him one of the most influential artist of modern times. Ask any of the artist still alive that knew "Bird" and they will verify the disservice Eastwood provided. Look up interviews of Max Roach, the great Be-Bop drummer, that were done with Gil Noble. Dirty Harry was a way to appease white fears of black men like Rocky let whites feel like world champs in boxing during the crack invested 80's. The work Eastwood did with Morgan Freeman was beautiful but it is not enough to make up for the damage he's done with promoting these super negative images of Black males. Thank you Spike Lee for speaking up on this cat, finally.
