Carlos Mencia Hangs Up On Radio Show After Being Questioned About Stealing!

      any moron could think of that joke, seriously. i distinctly remember talking about the us/mexico wall with coworkers and i think its the very first thing we talked about; how the people building the wall for us would be mexicans.

      claims of stealing and plagiarism are ridiculous sometimes, especially in something like comedy. there are very few original thoughts, and to claim that Ari is the first guy to ever think of that joke is equally as stupid as them harassing mencia.

      i don't like mencia myself, but i think this whole situation is retarded.

One week after he was on a local radio show down here in florida (The Paul and Young Ron Show) there was another comedian who said his jokes were stolen as well. And a couple days later Joe Rogan was explaining his story as well.

      The dude isn't even MEXICAN yet he says he is! It's rediculous!

      I used to listen to his old stuff a long time ago(standup) and it was sometimes funny but he always went on tirades in the middle lecturing people how to live etc.. Just not what I wanted to hear from a stand up comedian, so its not like his original stuff was even THAT good.

      And his TV show is just terrible.

That shouldn't be a point of contention, a lot of entertainers create a persona that has a completely different background than themselves. 90% of jokes start with a line like "So I was down at 7-11 the other day..." or "My parents sent me to catholic school when I was a kid..." It's not important whether or not the events they describe ever transpired. The whole Carlos Mencia problem is solely that he's taking credit for other people's material, not that his background and name are different than what he says.

Months ago when the whole stealing material from others thing started, he called in to try to explain himself and then went on to tell the morning show of one of 'his new ideas' - which happened to be an idea from another radio station (I think in Florida), being used without permission of course...

      Seriously guys, this one was too simple. If his stealing is so pervasive, bring it Ari.

      Truth be told I lost a lot of respect for Mencia as a comedian after I saw the Cosby/Kinison footage. Those seem to be clear cut joke thiefing. Ari and his fence joke just seem like he's trying to jump on the hate Mencia bandwagon.

      If Mencia started stealing from Jerry Seinfeld or something, people would then really notice. It's not like you have to be some world-renowned comedian to come up with a decent joke. Even if you follow the business closely, it probably means dick-all if you haven't heard of someone. Simple fact is he steals, he denies it, and just because he has a show on Comedy Central doesn't put him in the right.

      The other advantage from stealing from nobodies is because of how difficult it is for them to bring you to court.

      If a small company invents something new and won't sell out to the big boys like MS or Apple, self same big boys will "create" their own version call it something else and sell it as the latest thing. Call it stealing or call it beating someone to the punch-fact is it happens in everything.

      The moral is that Gates and Jobs are on top and you are not. Just like Carlos is on TV and Ari Nobody isn't. Being an artist is about art. Being a successful artist is about art and knowing how to market yourself.

    Carlos Mencia actually has some good stuff. I saw some of his before-he-was-famous stuff, and I've seen him on a couple interviews, and his own stuff is actually pretty decent, even when he's coming up with it on the fly. Admittedly, he's not nearly as funny or controversial or groundbreaking as he thinks he is, and he does steal quite a bit of stuff, but that doesn't take away from his ability to perform.

      Joe Rogan isn't funny. At all. He's louder and more obnoxious than Mencia. The big difference between the two is Mencia steals material and Rogan doesn't. The end result? Mencia is actually funny, while Rogan is still a jerk who does nothing on stage except cuss a lot.

      And, notice that I'm NOT defending Mencia. I didn't deny that he steals material, nor did I make an excuse for him. But the middle school mentality of Diggers to simply hate anything and everything that moves is simply ridiculous. You can hate the fact that Mencia steals without hating the man himself. Just like you can hate what Islam teaches without hating Muslims, or hate the fact that someone has a drinking or smoking problem without hating the person.

Because of my stance on copyright and intellectual property, I believe that anyone has the right to use someone else's material, HOWEVER the person being stolen from has the right to beat the fresh steaming ***** out of the stealing party if they profitted from his material and if they can prove that they performed the material first. This should be written into law for all public performances of non-copyrighted work such as standup. Joe Rogan is correct that Hollywood eats its young, but I bet Nedlos would definitely stop stealing from the young comedians after a few legally-sanctioned severe beatdowns.

Carlos Mencia called the show back about 15 minutes after the confrontation, and had a nauseating conversation about how he's just so "totally above" that stuff Ari just did, and how he thinks this is all happening because he is so famous.

    He actually said "I really wish Ari would become MORE famous than I am right now, so that I can give him a call and hear him tell me about all the people who are out to get him now." Mencia's excuse for stealing the Mexican border joke was that it was "so obvious" that the joke practically wrote itself. Well, if by "practically", you mean "someone else."

George Lopez hunted down Carlos and choked him (not hard enough apparently) because he did THIRTEEN consecutive minutes of his material on an HBO special. That's not taking an idea, a concept, a punchline or a single joke... that's taking 13 straight minutes of someone else's act and pretending it's your own material in front of a massive audience on an internationally broadcast cable special. Perhaps you should find out why people are pissed before you defend him, you ***** moron.

      You missed the whole point. It happens all the time. Williams did it. Carlin did it. Fox did it. Rogan is being an overly dramatic ***** about it. And truthfully, most (most!) comedians have been quiet about it. If it was REALLY that big of a deal it wouldn't just be Rogan getting all menstrual about it. Yes, I saw other comedians say he took material. A handful of them did. Most have not said a thing and it is not a fear of reprisal or anything else; it is because they do it too.

      Since the dawn of comedy this has been occurring in some form. Rogan needs some meds. Seriously.

He could have come up with some funny things to say about Sea world but instead he was just boring. I think the DJ actually made a swipe at him with the Shamu comment.

    Carlos Mencia is not very talented which is why he has to take material from other comics. You don't need a lot of evidence to see through him. Just listen to him..he's not interesting.

(Because there is no way in hell, apparently, that Carlos made that joke in 2002 and Ari stole it from him. No way in hell. Gimme a break). I know he stole it because when I did that joke I saw Carlos laughing at it. Uh huh. You just happened to see Carlos Mencia laughing at "your" joke that he then "stole from YOU" and you just happen to have remembered that moment in time for the next 3 years and when you then saw him doing "your" bit, you said to yourself, oh yeah, he must have stole that from ME. please.

    People always claim to have their material and someone famous stole it from them. Just because theres a video of the same joke told by 2 different people at 2 different points in time, doesn't show who stole whose material. There's no proof Carlos stole Ari's joke. There is also no proof that Ari didn't steal the joke from Carlos.

    My favorite part of this: Diggers think they know the truth and comment away like they know all the answers. You DON'T know. That's my point. You don't know whose lying and whose not. But ya know, by all means hide behind your keyboard and pretend to know all. Because your opinions have any sway over anyone else. I know for a fact that what I'm saying right now is going on deaf ears. You WILL continue to pretend to be oh so cool. Hate to break it to everyone: YOU ARE NOT COOL.     I didn't say he didn't see it. I said its highly unlikely that he could remember that exact moment in time for 3 years, especially if the joke was told more than once in that 3 year span. I believe they both told the joke. I never said they didn't.

    Oh yeah, I did this joke about Arnold and building a wall around Mexico. Carlos stole that joke from me. (Because there is no way in hell, apparently, that Carlos made that joke in 2002 and Ari stole it from him. No way in hell. Gimme a break). I know he stole it because when I did that joke I saw Carlos laughing at it. Uh huh. You just happened to see Carlos Mencia laughing at "your" joke that he then "stole from YOU" and you just happen to have remembered that moment in time for the next 3 years and when you then saw him doing "your" bit, you said to yourself, oh yeah, he must have stole that from ME. please.

    People always claim to have their material and someone famous stole it from them. Just because theres a video of the same joke told by 2 different people at 2 different points in time, doesn't show who stole whose material. There's no proof Carlos stole Ari's joke. There is also no proof that Ari didn't steal the joke from Carlos.

    My favorite part of this: Diggers think they know the truth and comment away like they know all the answers. You DON'T know. That's my point. You don't know whose lying and whose not. But ya know, by all means hide behind your keyboard and pretend to know all. Because your opinions have any sway over anyone else. I know for a fact that what I'm saying right now is going on deaf ears. You WILL continue to pretend to be oh so cool. Hate to break it to everyone: YOU ARE NOT COOL. Nothing you say or blog will make you any cooler. Girls will not sleep with you for anything you say on Digg. Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht will not say, Hey so and so is the coolest dude on Digg. Let's talk about him on our show. People do not read your words and say, "Goddamn I wish I were as cool as this person. Everything they say is spot on and full of biting wit. Maybe we should give them a tv show or a column in our periodical."

Lately he's been going a little too much into the rubber guard game but that's because Eddie Bravo's book was recently released I think and they are trying to mainstream it. Good techniques yeah, but those in the know already know. Large majority of people watching ufc aren't going to have any idea what a gogoplata is unless they get choked out in one.

  • Eleo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I really don't like Mencia's comedy that much, and I find his show to be a poor replacement for Chappelle's show which I thought was actually witty and well-written. To each his own on that one.

    I've seen the certain instances of Mencia "stealing" jokes, but I have to say that I don't think it's a that huge of a deal. Last I checked, comedian's use each other's material from time to time or put twists on it. The thing about a joke is it can be retold or told in different or funnier ways. Some of this stealing might even be subconscious; one hears a funny joke and unintentionally reproduces it or rephrases it. I'm sure we all have at one point re-thought something we've read, seen, or heard and not even known at first that it wasn't our original thought.

    While I don't like Mencia's standup at all, I can't watch it and honestly say that even a good portion of his stuff is stolen. Maybe a few things here and there, but I think this ***** is blown way out of proportion.
