- troopa, on 10/23/2009, -1/+43I've always respected Cosby for his ability to be funny without being dirty. With that said, I also respect George Carlin for the opposite!
- Minxiloni, on 10/23/2009, -2/+40ZIP ZOP ZOOBIDA BOP!!!!!!!
- urbanetruth, on 10/23/2009, -1/+33Some of his old bits are timeless. He did it without being "dirty" too, which is incredible. And by dirty, I mean Pryor and Murphy, who are legends too. But they had a completely different brand of humor.
- Smokeydabear, on 10/23/2009, -1/+27I had this yearbook class in high school and the teacher used to let us mess around with an old record player. So we used to listen to some Bill Cosby comedy records about driving with a manual transmission in San Francisco. I had no idea what the ***** he was talking about until years later, when I actually drove around San Francisco in a car with manual transmission.
- TheJimid, on 10/23/2009, -6/+27Similar to Bill Cosby's comedy, Jello also has no shelf life.
- sangjmoon, on 10/23/2009, -1/+21I respect Bill Cosby for his familial humor without the raunchiness, and he is one of he few entertainers I respect off the stage too because he doesn't fall into the societal victimization mindset so many clueless celebrities have.
- jeffreyk, on 10/23/2009, -2/+20I like how no one thought it was weird that he was a gynecologist who took "office hours" in his basement where his family lives. $10 bucks says his "office" had a secret door to another "examining room"
- illspaz, on 10/23/2009, -1/+17Of course his jokes have shelf life. Why else would Carlos Mencia keep passing them off as his own?
- geodebug, on 10/23/2009, -1/+17Who doesn't like Bill Cosby? Smart, congenial, funny, and isn't afraid to take heat for telling his community what they don't want to hear about personal responsibility.
- jezsik, on 10/23/2009, -0/+15On the other hand, I respected Carlin for his sociological insights. Take away the humor and you get interesting stuff. That can't be said of most comedians.
- chicagojack, on 10/23/2009, -0/+14no shelf life, or unlimited shelf life?
- troopa, on 10/23/2009, -2/+16I was waiting for that. Everyone knows what I mean...
- jdames1980, on 10/23/2009, -0/+13It has a half-life.
- inactive, on 10/23/2009, -1/+13His sweaters however have dated horribly.
- inactive, on 10/23/2009, -3/+15I don't think George Carlin could order coffee without dropping an F bomb.
- T8erT0T, on 10/23/2009, -0/+11Murphy talking about Cosby in his routine is great too.
God damn Eddie Murphy, what the hell happened to you? - SmilinChris, on 10/23/2009, -2/+13He wasn't the safe black man. He was a solid comic with a great set list. To just stripe him as a "safe black comic" is absurd.
- geesamba, on 10/23/2009, -0/+10I saw/heard him making the sounds as I read your comment. Dugg!
- CreateTheFuture, on 10/23/2009, -1/+11I'll have a vanilla... one of those vanilla ***** things. You know, whatever you want, some vanilla ***** latte cappa thing. Whatever you got.
- PhantomRogue, on 10/23/2009, -0/+9I still listen to Bill Cosby's CD "Himself." Its just non stop laughing. And that was what... early 80s?
- inactive, on 10/23/2009, -2/+10Haha i know, i'm just your friendly neighborhood jackass ;-)
- evil-doer, on 10/23/2009, -1/+9"no shelf life" is a horrible way to put it.
thats the opposite of a long shelf life, which is what it really is. - 1jaxstate1, on 10/23/2009, -1/+9Damn I didn't know Bill was 72. Still one of my favorite comedians.
- TurtlesInTime, on 10/23/2009, -0/+7And occasionally comes in an Orange Box.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/23/2009, -1/+7"Dad is great" - it rhymes.
- 883XL, on 10/23/2009, -2/+8I read that in his voice.
- Fleagleman, on 10/23/2009, -1/+6Oh, it's got a shelf life, believe me.
- KVachon, on 10/23/2009, -2/+7Millions of people disagree with you. Im sorry your sense of humor is so unique. Who do you find funny? Jeff Dunham? George Lopez?
- CaptainScarlet, on 10/23/2009, -2/+7I don't know...When you say "*****, Piss, *****, *****, *****, *****, *****"...it just makes the joke a whole lot funnier.
- foucaultsvac, on 10/23/2009, -1/+6"Dad is the best! He gave us chocolate cake!"
- falconear, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4"Himself" is timeless, without a doubt. All the points about drugs and alcohol are as true today as they were then.
"Am I falling off this chair?"
"Thank you Mr. Toilet bowl, for being so cool on the side..." - latexsolarbeef, on 10/23/2009, -1/+5I'd put money on Carlos Mencia
- iheartbakon, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4How would he have done the 7 Bad Words bit without using profanity and still be funny?
- mojoel, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4"Father? May we have chocolate cake?"
"Chocolate cake? Coming right up! SHONK SHONK SHONK SHONK!"
If you haven't seen "Bill Cosby Himself" you should. - mojoel, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4I miss Jell-O Pudding Pops.
- doshindude, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4"And the dogs are poopin' and nobody's scoopin' and blahehanawahwah!"
- evil-doer, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3i tried to make that point and people are actually digging me down.
shelf life = how long it stays fresh
no shelf life = goes bad right away
i understand the poster was trying to say no EXPIRATION DATE on the comedy, but he failed. - TheEggAndI, on 10/23/2009, -1/+4cobsy came to speak at my graduation at temple last year (i think he speaks every year, but im not positive), and it was awesome to see him there. but it seems like he's become increasingly disgruntled in his attitude lately. i think its because he tried to hard to champion for a more respectful generation of young black americans and didnt have the impact he hoped for. his speech was classic cosby with a hint of "i dont think you deserve this quite yet".
but he could insulted me to my face and i still would have felt honored to be zinged by bill cosby - Rhendal, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3"One thing Cosby says he doesn't do anymore is watch TV.
'I'm not thrilled with the deliberate onslaught of the public by the major networks in terms of the sitcoms,' says Cosby, who has been outspoken about socioeconomic issues. 'They still don't get it about race. They still don't get it about gender. Jokes are still about jerks and body parts and sex. The excuse is always the public wants stuff that raises the dopamine level.'"
I cannot agree with this more. - azpat, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Same here. I remember stalling on that hill and all I could think about was Bill Cosby.
- rkthoadan, on 10/23/2009, -1/+4The straight up gratuitous profanity can often go away without a problem, but sometimes it has a point. I saw a cleaned up version of Shawshank Redemption and it did impact it somewhat and made it seem less real. I remember they changed "he crawled through a river of *****" to something else (sewage maybe, I'm not sure) and thought it was a pointless edit that downplayed what it was. They obviously toned down the prison rape parts as well. Sometimes profanity has a point.
- contradictator, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Jell-O can withstand any opposing force.
- yoshiboy, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2This isn't in politics, so turn your SUV around and go ***** yourself.
- hammr, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2"Hey Hey Hey!"
--Fat Albert - JDanner3, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2I saw him on Jay Leno the other night. Does anyone know what is going on with his eye?
- Codeman917, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2@rkthoadan
Man, I've only ever seen Shawshank on tv... I never knew he said "*****" there. Thanks, interwebz! - KVachon, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2"Hey fith flarn *****. Dick pussy snot and *****. Goodnight!"
- iheartbakon, on 10/23/2009, -1/+3"Well, tell Bill I said have a Coke and a smile and shut the ***** up. Jell-o puddin' eatin' *****."
~Eddie Murphie - Mujokan, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Meh, I dunno. You have to think about him in his time, with a knowledge of other stand-up comedians who were around then, before even Fat Albert.
There were other comedians who got across the big-city black experience later in the 1970s. He was on a smaller scale, talking about his childhood, changing the vibe of domestic comedy that started out with guys like Jack Benny. He was talented enough to bring ordinary black domestic comedy into the mainstream, and just for that he deserves to be called a pioneer. - raydeen, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Cosby's best routine was 'To Russell my brother, whom I slept with'.
