- mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39What part is consider offensive? I honestly listened to the whole thing -multiple times- and can't hear one thing that might be offensive.
- Moskie, on 10/11/2007, -11/+41screamthenrun: "talking about raping Laura Bush, Condi Rice, and the queen is offensive"
it's also pretty damn funny. - plastikman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28Frrrrrruuuunnnkis!!!! Bring back the b-b-boys! They were only joking.
- TangerineDream, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Score another win for censorship. What's next? Blurring out the boobies on Cinemax?
- steger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24I'm calling xm and punching out.
- erohen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25This is a load of *****. Free speech is DEAD. This is not a HOWARD vs O&A, this is straight up a Censorship issue.
- grooviekenn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22XM radio - Officially censored and officially canceling my subscription
- stephll, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17It's ridiculous that XM is punishing the listeners, who pay for the service, buy suspending them. If we didn't find them funny, we wouldn't pay money to listen.
- jlink7, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Sometimes, people think offensive is funny. I do. People like me do. I am not an abnormality, I'm just a member of the status quo... I am an honest, nice guy (at least I think so), a military officer, who happens to like my humor a little bit offensive. Would I go around joking the way they do? No, because my a large part of reputation depends on me not offending people, both superiors and those that I lead.
O&A do not though. In fact, THEIR reputations rely on being offensive. If somebody is personally offended, they should just not listen. I'm tired of people complaining about a radio show comment that doesn't directly involved them and they would probably have NEVER heard about except for somebody else complaining. We all have the option of turning the station or turning the radio off. - NRX22, on 07/23/2008, -10/+21What did Stern say, something to the effect of,
"I don't give a ***** about fighting for anyone's free speech except my own"
Great guy. - brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Lots of stuff they say is offensive, that isn't the point.
The point is that their show is that XM is not subject to FCC censorship, so they were free to say whatever they wanted.
Now thats over.
Its funny how a lot of people insist they are all for freedom of speech right up until the point where they here something they don't like. - dylan420, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12WTF is offensive? I've also listened NUMEROUS times and can't pick it out.
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Raammooooooooooooonnnneeeeeee just called and put in a formal complaint.. saying if they go off the air, then so do I!
THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO CENSOR WHAT I PAY FOR! - sych0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Well, I heard no mention of rape. The guy said he'd like to ***** her. I realize we're on digg, but don't most males talk about who they'd like to *****? Wanting to have sex with someone is not conducive of rape. Or is it the fact that their "shock jocks" mean that they must have been alluding to rape?
Not to mention it was neither Opie nor Anthony who said the comments. - got-haggis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9that audio clip can't be right, there is nothing offensive (even slightly) about it.
- erohen, on 10/11/2007, -17/+25Stern is a douche
- frodsteamin2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10i have called and cancel and no free 2 months, "***** it" ronnie b
- danc4498, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I haven't listened to this yet, but if I do listen to this, and hear nothing about rape (as I suspect I will), I'm going to be pissed the hell off about all the crappy news stories with inaccurate headlines
- Gooberdome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Free speech is not about when it causes injury. The same constitutional laws that protect the KKK and their hate speech are the same laws that protect every person (and comic - and dopey radio shock jock) to say WHATEVER they want WHENEVER they want.
You do NOT have a right not to be offended. You do NOT have a right to impose your weakness on the rest of society. And quite honestly, if you are offended by something you hear on the radio, you need to do some internal soul searching and find out why a bunch of strangers a few hundred miles away talking into a microphone caused such a detrimental effect on you.
How weak of a society have we become that we have completely allowed the special interest groups completely dictate what we can see, hear and experience? When did we stop telling these self obsessed fascists that 90% of the world doesn't give a good god damn what they think? Why is the vocal 10% constantly getting their way?
It is time to stand up to special interest groups and tell them that we are NOT going to be bullied by them and we are not going to let them dictate our lives. I completely understand why Rudy locked down city hall in NYC to all of these groups.
I am tired of having MY freedoms trampled on by other people who I didn't ask to speak for me, I dont want them speaking for me, I dont want them worrying about my children, I don't want them in my life and I don't want screwing up the little free-voiced entertainment we have left in this world. - zelig, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7god I hope not.
- nyijedi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I subscribed to an uncensored, unregulated service 3 years ago. Whether you love O&A or hate them, this makes it obvious that XM is no longer in the business of providing uncensored, unregulated radio. I canceled my 3 radios as soon as I heard the news. I hope the merger falls through and XM goes bankrupt.
- MattyLite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Ugh, and I JUST subscribed to XM a few days ago. I don't listen to their show, but ***** this.
- morningmatters, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I wonder how many people actually signed for XM just because of O&A.
- XxXoldsaltXxX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They basically run their entire advertising campaign based on O&A, and they pull this *****.. What a joke.
- slapmonkay, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I did not hear anything that I would think worth a suspension... anyone.
- xxenclavexx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I really don't find anything offensive. I find Ryan Seacrests voice more offensive than that snippet of talk radio. I can't imagine any1 getting fired for this.
- haggie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6they are "shock jocks". what they say is suppose to offensive, base, and appeal generally to moronic rednecks. that's their audience. its not like they were shouting this over bullhorns at the opera.
if i get to censor people that are stupid and offensive to me, al sharpton and alberto gonzalez would both be wearing ball gags.
freedom of speech. means freedom for everyone to say anything. not freedom to say things that are soft and fuzzy to people that agree with you. - elmro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9This has nothing to do with the Don Imus effect and everything to do with the fact that XM is merging with Sirius and need government approval. The fact that Mel K. (aka Howie's best friend) will be leading the merged companies does not help O&A either.
- evildeadxsp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5here's a link to what happened to JV & Elvis
http://www.garysbasement.com/index.php/jv-and-elvis-fired-cbs-radio-is-officially-insane/
free speech on the radio is dead.
radio is dead. free speech is dead. - jagermeistr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4xm cant have it both ways. you cant hype up how great your service is for being free of censorship then take down the very guys who you pay to prove that to the consumer (i subscribe pretty much only for o&a). while we're at it, why dont they also get rid of Raw? most certainly more offensive things on that station than on 202.
- mikeyeah, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I'm so anti-bush that their comments don't even bother me.
- jachris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3xm is robbing us and lied to us
- dakboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You have no "right" to free speech on XM or Sirius. The company is paying the on-air people for content, and if they don't like the content, they can turn it off. It's that simple.
- lamfy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33 subs canceled here.
- rjarow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Slippery Slope my friends, slippery slope. Support PAC, Support Free Speech!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Who gives a ***** about offensiveness on censor-free radio?
XM just made a real bad ***** move. - SpaceEdge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I did only for O and A
- SpaceEdge, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5This is ridiculous this country ***** sucks why are the special interest groups controlling what we want to enjoy ?
- mattdew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3While I am a big fan of Opie & Anthony (Lil' Jimmy, too) and a supporter of free speech, I don't see this as a free speech issue. Corporations have no constitutional obligation to grant freedom of speech to their employees, and it is entirely within their prerogative to censor their employees as they see fit. Ultimately XM's on-air talent only has the on-air rights that XM gives them. I don't like what's happening to O&A or to other DJs, but no ones freedom of speech is being violated here.
Simply put, it is all about a corporation doing what they believe is best for their bottom line while operating in an environment that is hyper-sensitive and far too politically correct. The big-wigs at XM no doubt felt this was the best business move they could make, and that is ALL it is about...they aren't making some moral stand...they're scared ***** that some opportunist is gonna stand up on a soapbox, demand O&A's heads, and harm XM's image and business in the process ....just as Al Sharpton did to CBS/MSNBC and Imus.
That said, it's entirely within our rights as consumers to express our displeasure with XM's action and to hurt their bottom line for being a bunch of scaredy-cats (that's right, I said scaredy-cats). If O&A get canned, I'm canceling my 2 radio subscription.
If there is any slippery slope, though, it's toward a world where people will be too afraid to say ANYTHING for fear of offending someone and losing their job, or for fear of getting sued for hurting someone's feelings. You won't be able to have an opinion, or crack a joke, or be anything other than a mute robot....what fun is that? Does anyone want to live in a world where people have a legal right to not have their feelings hurt? I think we're headed there. - dierien2001, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I cannot believe that our country has come to this.
I am a fan of free speech and regardless of the words said our constitution grants us the liberty and RIGHT to say them!
Special interest groups are squeezing away all of our rights.. O and A were not preaching hate, they were putting on a ***** comedy show!!!!
Turn on the XM XL comedy channels and you will hear WAY more offensive material than what O and A were discussing during this show or any other for that matter
At this rate the constitution might as well be written on toilet paper!
------------
Just in case anyone needed clarification please read the following:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." - ferndave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sorry man, you're correct, but too many people don't understand or don't want to understand.
Freedom of speech is alive and well. You still have the freedom to say whatever you want on the air or even in your cubicle. And it still holds true that If your bosses don't like it you might be looking for another place to say those things. - zephypyre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will . . . oh, get us fired I guess.
- m00nb34m, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Is this "officially" what caused it? Seems that there must have been more than that!
- rohcky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Cancelling my sub right now. Maybe I'll sign back up in a month.
- Funkly, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4its DUMP button.... you ignorant unknowing radio techie.... this is a joke for all of you out there that cant take one... well except for the button thing.. thats true..
- kidcoconut, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6I'm a fan of terrestrial AND satellite radio, XM, O&A and the freedom they were given on XM. This is a sad day.
- Bokista, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I heard this on the air yesterday and would have never guessed that this was the bit of criticism that pushed XM into giving them the suspension. But, as O&A say, you never know where it's gonna come from!
- jerbaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"If there is any slippery slope, though, it's toward a world where people will be too afraid to say ANYTHING for fear of offending someone and losing their job, or for fear of getting sued for hurting someone's feelings. And we're headed there because people like you do not want to regulate radio and television even though they are using OUR AIRWAVES! Censorship is censorship regardless of who is performing the censorship. Just because there is no law against firing people for expressing an opinion doesn't mean it's right, and it doesn't mean we have to tolerate it as a public either. - elitemrp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4This is such BS. I've cancelled my xm account.
This affects all radio shows so even if you hate O&A this is bad news, Howie/Sirius isn't safe either. -
