- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+43Outsourcing??? Try oil.
That apartment looks wicked, but what's the difference between a $10m apartment there and a $10m apartment anywhere else in the world? I'd expect something ridiculously nice anywhere for that price ... - Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24He's right Dubai imports tons of cheap labor
"It may be the world's biggest boomtown, but human rights groups say that Dubai's gleaming towers are being built on the backs of exploited foreign workers."
http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/11/dark_side_of_du.html - lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18How does importing cheap labor equal outsourcing?? In my mind, it is the opposite.
- iepurilah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16only 10 mil...a bargain
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14An apartment like this is any blogger dream, have fun & work in your own apartment all day long.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's not just us Pakis, it's also the Indians and the Bangalis (Bangladeshis).
I have a certain love/hate relationship with the UAE...I was born there but I am not a native Arab so I didn't get citizenship...so once I turned 18 I'm just another foreigner to them. I hate the fact that I have to get a visa just to visit the place where I was born and spent most of my life... - edg3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Larger image: http://www.edg3.co.uk/snatch/apartments_in_dubai.jpg
- brainache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And it isn't uncommon for even the largest construction firms to withhold the passports of the foreign workers so they can't return home.

Many companies have set up in Dubai, it is perfectly geogaphically situated as the gateway between East and West. True many oil companies are in Dubai, if not all, but thats simply due to the 0% corporation tax.
When one says money comes from oil I refer to the same means that Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Nigeria are oil rich, Dubai simpy does not compare.
So yes some of Dubai's wealth has come from oil COMPANIES, but not it's own oil. - rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He was born there. You make sound it like it was his choice.
Many workers from India and Pakistan are brought to Dubai with very misleading stories about their working conditions and contract terms. Fact is, where they're coming from, they only have so much access to good information. - PiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, except anyone who works as a "Blogger" will never see anything close to a million dollars, much less 10 million.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The U.A.E. didnt get its wealth from oil.
The entire government is run like a huge company... and what a successful company it is!
The U.A.E. is basically the midway point between the East and West and they exploit it so well, they are so damned rich. - kessel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6the comments on the actual site are disgustingly racist
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think if you can afford a 10 million dollar apt.. I doubt travel prices are a concern...
- Danial, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Built by us Pakis, without us they would be exporting camel milk and dates to this day.
- AirPortPanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5 live in Dubai.
Other places I’ve lived: Tokyo, New York, Milan.
Good things about Dubai:
-relatively clean (but not the air)
-lots of jobs, work, money
Bad things about Dubai:
-tons of traffic
-construction everywhere. think about all the buildings you hear about, none of them are done. They are all being worked on at the same time. This city is not done, in fact 10 years ago there was no city.
-the people are prententious. money can buy you a lot but it can’t buy you culture, humanity, or community.
bottom line: you can find everything they have in Dubai in other major cities but with even more exclusive selections, a friendlier community, a real art/design/music scene, etc.
a large portion of the tremendous amount of money they have is put into promoting the city.. unfortunately it makes the locals and some westerners arrogant. sometimes when they're rude i think "you need to go to a real city". - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Dubai's gleaming towers are being built on the backs of exploited foreign workers."
That's a clever trick, must be painful though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Chicken, you may want to look up how much the USD is worth vs the canadian dollar as of late.
- rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One big problem with doing business in Dubai: Telecoms. Etisalat is a protected monopoly that charges punitive rates. Competition - even in the form of internal VoIP - is not tolerated. As a result, it's much more expensive and cumbersome to operate from Dubai than it ought to be. We finally gave up trying to open an office there when they told us we'd have to effectively separate our Dubai-based workers from the rest of the company and route internal communications through Etisalat's antiquated and shockingly pricey service.
- phidgt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For $10 million you can get yourself one of those islands in the world that they are making off the coast. I read that they were starting at $7 million which leaves you with some change left over for a beach house.

- hunglowang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$10 million for an apartment in the middle of nowhere? NO THANKS. You don't create a city in 5 min out of nothing and expect it to be the center of the world.
- rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's good for a visit, but if Dubai is one of the most exciting, lively, and affordable cities you've been to, you sure haven't been around much. Try any major city in east/southeast Asia (for exciting and lively; subtract Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong for cheap).
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, they mean 10 Million Pesos
- greenjohnsmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dubai is full of westerns and it is very very expensive to live there. It is often the case the westerns leave Dubai because it is so costly to live.
- egrumling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. That video was so bad. Reminds me of the fake commercials in Robocop. Or maybe anything with the word "Trump" on it.
Wealth is wasted on the rich. - danakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What I can get for 10 million: nothin.
- zarloniusrex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so basically, what i could afford in dubai with the extent of my savings thus far... *counts change in pocket* would equate to 1/10000th my total size.
depressing.
well, maybe in ten years time i'll be wealthy enough to own my very own sleeping crate. luxury not included :( - tucobenedicto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dubai is actually the tackiest place in the world.
- Jonny0stars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dubai is one of the most lively and exciting cites i have been to, its also one of the cheapest.
Its the hight of luxury but travel down the motorway and see the gold souk, spice souk and you will see the real Dubai and its a million times better than the high price apartments and golf courses even if it is on the poorer side, its where the people are and there the best part... still wouldn't turn one of these apartments down though. - seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ danakin... You can get a whole lot of hookers and cocaine for $10 mill!
- scottylist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.damacproperties.com/
- junk2006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3read the comments under that there hilarious
- ericisroot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can I get that pool in gold with some girls for $20 million?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Expect a lot of absurdities as wealth continues to reconcentrate (wealth concentration was on a downward trend until recently).
- seiha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2built by slave labor: http://www.uaeprison.com/index.htm
- OfF3nSiV3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1why would someone live in dubai just to get those apartments?
i mean..it's far from new york, frankfurt, etc..how much would it cost to go to work each morning? - chaesar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0these people dont work
or they work for Halliburton, who are moving their HQ to Dubai - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Heh, seriously, have you ever seen the prices for apartments/condos in Manhattan? They easily out-price Dubai (even though they don't have nearly as many features):
http://www.corcoran.com/property/popupfromoutside.asp?Lid=44-931829&Agent=0&email=CWS@corcoran.com&poppage=C - 3eeedeee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if i had 10 mil, i'd buy a cheap house and spend the other 9.8 mil filling it with a steady stream of slutty babes.
- 3eeedeee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hot babes are rarely ever free. They may be free at first, but you always pay in the end. especially if you get suckered into the marriage & kids scam. it's like those furniture store ads that say "zero down and no payments until 2010". The catch is, by the time you have to start paying for the furniture, it is already old and trashed and you want to trade it for newer furniture.
i'm guessing the super rich people must use Dubai as a tax dodge. thats the only thing that explains why it exists. maybe it isn't such a bad thing to spend 10 million on a dubai residence, if by doing so you save 15 mil in taxes. - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The UAE generates its wealth from the energy sector (not natural resource revenue) and banking, and now more recently, from tourism related services. The best thing, however, is their pro-business laws/regulations. This includes no-tax benefits, 100% foreign ownership, relaxed visa procedures, cheap imported labor, etc.
Also... Dubai has been ruled by a family dynasty since the 19th century (the same family is still in power). So much for the "midway point between the East and West" eh? You need not be Western to be successful... - an0nym0us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you have to pay to get babes, you fail at life.
- Seomann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1In Dubai $10 million is like $30 million dollars in the U.S.
- stevenvh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ok, I understand that for 10M you can't have everything, but how about a garden(1) to read a book(2)?
(1) Garden: piece of ground, enclosed, and cultivated with extraordinary care, planted with herbs or fruit or food, or laid out for pleasure.
(2) Book: collection of leaves of paper, parchment, vellum, or other material (whether written, printed, or blank), affixed in in some manner to one another, with or without a case or cover, at least 49 pages. - samk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How can each apartment in a skyscraper have its own private elevator?? Half the building would have to be just elevator shafts...
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@inseverance
Dubai's wealth absolutely comes from oil. Whether UAE has oil or not, Dubai is the capital of Petrostan. The wealthy from across the region and the foreign companies all set up shop there. - AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think that's pretty damn good for $10million. I know alot of stuff must be unreasonably expensive in Dubai, but that sounds about right after reading the article
- sleepingcow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2its not Dubai's fault that the subcontinent people get exploited. if you don't want to be exploited, don't go to Dubai. simple. i doubt it that those Arabs forced them to stay.
- InSeverance, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9Oil?!
There is VERY little oil in the UAE, it is a fallacy to think that Dubai's wealth has stemmed from such means. -
